Does Bph Increase Your Risk Of Developing Prostate Cancer

What Is The Normal Prostate Size How To Shrink Prostate Naturally

Based on research to date, the answer is no. However, BPH and prostate cancer have similar symptoms, and a man who has BPH may have undetected cancer at the same time.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men make an informed decision with their health care provider whether to be screened for prostate cancer. For men at average risk, this discussion should start at age 50. They also say that for men who are at high risk, such as African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer, screening should be considered at age 45. Men at an even higher risk, such as having more than one relative with a history of prostate cancer at an early age, should consider earlier testing.

The American Urological Association recommends against routine screening for men age 40 – 54 who have an average risk of prostate cancer. Those with a higher risk are encouraged to discuss prostate cancer screening tests with their doctor. The association recommends that men ages 55 – 69 should weigh the risks and benefits of screening and treatment. For those who choose screening, the AUA suggests that they may be screened every two years rather than annually. Tests used to screen for prostate cancer include a blood test for a substance called prostate-specific antigen and the digital rectal exam . The AUA does not recommend PSA screening in men over age 70 or any man with less than a 10-15-year life expectancy.

Is My Prostate Size Normal

I got a pelvic ultrasound and my prostate size was reported as 4 x 2.7 x 4 cm. It was reported to be normal in size.

From what I understand, prostate size should be 30 cc. By a simple volume calculation , the size of my prostate is 43 cc. I had been having mild chronic prostatitis symptoms for years.

So my question is, is my prostate enlarged or normal? And am I calculating the size wrong?

I have read that normal weight should be 20-25g and size approximately4x2x3cm. I have no idea how anyone can tell how much it weighs! If you have mild prostatitis yours possibly is larger than normal. Its probably like anything else, each person will differ. This forum is great and Im sure a lot more people will be along to offer advice soon.

They just put two fingers under it and know from experience how much it weighs. It seems not to need much training to do it as GPs who do not do it very often usually get it right. Now they are training nurses to do initial consultations to decide who needs passing up the chain. Every DRE estimate Ive had has later been confirmed by a TRUSS or cystoscopy.

Size does not mean a lot it depends on where it is pressing and causing an obstuction. Mine was reduced from 135grm to 55grm in my last laser procedure. The 55gms of tissue left is not causing any problem.

Variation In Prostate Size By Method Of Estimation

Estimates of prostate volume differed when disparate scanning modalities were used. Average gland size calculated by the contoured ultrasound, ellipsoid ultrasound, and erMRI methods were 33.99, 37.16, and 39.62 mLs, respectively. The difference between the average volume obtained on contoured ultrasound and that obtained on ellipsoid ultrasound was significant as was the difference between average gland size on contoured ultrasound and erMRI . The comparison between average ellipsoid and erMRI prostate volumes was also significant .

What Is The Normal Size Of The Prostate

The prostate is an organ located below the bladder and in front of the rectum which is only present in the male body, fulfilling a key role in the formation of seminal fluid. The prostate secretes an alkaline fluid, white in appearance, that makes up to 30% of the volume of semen.

Over the years this gland can slightly increase in size, resulting in a condition known as prostatitis or inflammation of the prostate. For this reason many men wonder what the normal size of the prostate is and at what point it is considered enlarged. Table 2 from Age

The prostate plays a fundamental role in the formation of seminal fluid, making sure it produces the correct volume. Their secretions also benefit the mobility of sperm, ensuring that they arrive safely to the egg to fertilize it.

Additionally, this gland is responsible for protecting men from urinary tract infections and maintains a healthy bladder, so it is paramount that it is in perfect condition.

    How Is Bph Diagnosed

After evaluating your medical history and giving you a complete physical, your doctor will perform a digital rectal examination.

Because the prostate gland is in front of the rectum, the doctor can feel if the back of the gland has any abnormalities during this examination. This enables the doctor to estimate the size of the prostate and to detect any hard areas that could be cancer.

Several studies may be done to help diagnose your condition:

    • A urine test called a urinalysis
    • A seven-question BPH Symptom Score Index survey to evaluate the severity of your symptoms
    • A flow study to see if the urine stream is slow compared with normal flow
    • A study to detect how much urine is left in the bladder after urination

    Blood And Lymphatic Vessels

The prostate receives blood through the inferior vesical artery, internal pudendal artery, and middle rectal arteries. These vessels enter the prostate on its outer posterior surface where it meets the bladder, and travel forward to the apex of the prostate. Both the inferior vesical and the middle rectal arteries often arise together directly from the internal iliac arteries. On entering the bladder, the inferior vesical artery splits into a urethral branch, supplying the urethral prostate and a capsular branch, which travels around the capsule and has smaller branches which perforate into the prostate.

The veins of the prostate form a network the prostatic venous plexus, primarily around its front and outer surface. This network also receives blood from the deep dorsal vein of the penis, and is connected via branches to the vesical plexus and internal pudendal veins. Veins drain into the vesical and then internal iliac veins.

The lymphatic drainage of the prostate depends on the positioning of the area. Vessels surrounding the vas deferens, some of the vessels in the seminal vesicle, and a vessel from the posterior surface of the prostate drain into the external iliac lymph nodes. Some of the seminal vesicle vessels, prostatic vessels, and vessels from the anterior prostate drain into internal iliac lymph nodes. Vessels of the prostate itself also drain into the obturator and sacral lymph nodes.

How Are Researchers Trying To Improve The Psa Test

Scientists are investigating ways to improve the PSA test to give doctors the ability to better distinguish cancerous from benign conditions and slow-growing cancers from fast-growing, potentially lethal cancers. None has been proven to decrease the risk of death from prostate cancer. Some of the methods being studied include:

    Prostate Enlargement And Psa

Cells of the prostate gland release protein known as Prostate Specific Antigen into the bloodstream. This protein can circulate in the bloodstream in two ways: on its own or bound to other proteins. PSA tests are usually conducted to measure the quantity of this antigen in the blood. While free-PSA test measures the quantity of unbound PSA and bound-PSA test measures the quantity of bound PSA, total PSA test in general measures the sum total of both free and bound PSA in the blood.

What If A Screening Test Shows An Elevated Psa Level

If a man who has no symptoms of prostate cancer chooses to undergo prostate cancer screening and is found to have an elevated PSA level, the doctor may recommend another PSA test to confirm the original finding. If the PSA level is still high, the doctor may recommend that the man continue with PSA tests and DREs at regular intervals to watch for any changes over time.

If a mans PSA level continues to rise or if a suspicious lump is detected during a DRE, the doctor may recommend additional tests to determine the nature of the problem. A urine test may be recommended to check for a urinary tract infection. The doctor may also recommend imaging tests, such as a transrectal ultrasound, x-rays, or cystoscopy.

If prostate cancer is suspected, the doctor will recommend a prostate biopsy. During this procedure, multiple samples of prostate tissue are collected by inserting hollow needles into the prostate and then withdrawing them. Most often, the needles are inserted through the wall of the rectum . A pathologist then examines the collected tissue under a microscope. The doctor may use ultrasound to view the prostate during the biopsy, but ultrasound cannot be used alone to diagnose prostate cancer.

Example Of Confidence Interval For An Individual Patient Using T

Let us follow the prostate volume example as in the preceding section on the standard normal distribution, except that we shall use m and s from the small sample of Table DB1.1 rather than and . For the 10 volumes, m=32.7 ml and s=15.9 ml. Because we are dealing with only one sample, df=n1=9. We therefore need look only at the df=9 row in Table 6.2. The prostate volume 59 ml yields t=/15.9=1.65, which places it 1.65 standard deviations above the mean. This lies between the 1.38 which falls under =0.10 on the 9 df row and 1.83 which falls under =0.05. We can conclude that between 5% and 10% of patients will have volumes greater than this patient. Similarly, the 83-ml prostate yields t=3.16, which is between =0.01 and =0.005 less than 1% of patients will have volumes this large. We do not tabulate t for as many possible values as we do the standard normal, because a full table would be required for every possible df. We can calculate on a computer =0.067 for t=1.65 and =0.006 for t=3.16 if we need them.

How Is The Psa Test Used In Men Who Have Been Treated For Prostate Cancer

Male Pelvis and Prostate Section Model 3550

The PSA test is often used to monitor patients who have a history of prostate cancer to see if their cancer has recurred . If a mans PSA level begins to rise after prostate cancer treatment, it may be the first sign of a recurrence. Such a biochemical relapse typically appears months or years before other clinical signs and symptoms of prostate cancer recurrence.

However, a single elevated PSA measurement in a patient who has a history of prostate cancer does not always mean that the cancer has come back. A man who has been treated for prostate cancer should discuss an elevated PSA level with his doctor. The doctor may recommend repeating the PSA test or performing other tests to check for evidence of a recurrence. The doctor may look for a trend of rising PSA level over time rather than a single elevated PSA level.

Is The Psa Test Recommended For Prostate Cancer Screening

Until about 2008, some doctors and professional organizations encouraged yearly PSA screening for men beginning at age 50. Some organizations recommended that men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer, including African-American men and men whose father or brother had prostate cancer, begin screening at age 40 or 45. However, as more was learned about both the benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening, a number of organizations began to caution against routine population screening. Most organizations recommend that men who are considering PSA screening first discuss the risks and benefits with their doctors.

Currently, Medicare provides coverage for an annual PSA test for all Medicare-eligible men age 50 and older. Many private insurers cover PSA screening as well.

    Using Medication To Reduce Symptoms

  • 1Recognize the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Look for a weak stream of urine, dribbling at the end of urination, or an increased need to urinate at night. You may also have difficulty starting urination or need to strain to empty your bladder. If you notice these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor for an official diagnosis.XTrustworthy SourceMayo ClinicEducational website from one of the world’s leading hospitalsGo to source
  • 2Try alpha-blockers if you have trouble urinating. Talk to your doctor about alpha-blockers, which can relax muscles around the bladder and prostate. These drugs help increase the flow of urine when you use the bathroom and keep you from needing to urinate too frequently.XResearch source
  • While adverse side effects are infrequent, alpha-blockers can cause dizziness. The good news is, they typically help relieve symptoms within a few weeks.
  • Take alpha-blockers, like tamsulosin, as directed by your doctor.
  • Most alpha-blockers are safe to take with other medications. Consult your pharmacist for any potential drug interactions with your current medication regimen.
  • 3Explore enzyme-inhibitors if you have a very enlarged prostate. Ask your doctor if enzyme-inhibitors, like finasteride and dutasteride, would be a good fit for your symptoms. These drugs shrink prostate tissue to reduce urinary problems and are often most effective on severely enlarged prostates.XResearch source
  • Like alpha-blockers, dizziness is the most common side effect.

Preventing The Increase In Prostate Volume

How to Measure Urinary Bladder and Prostate Volume (Demo For Residents)

Of course, an enlarged prostate volume can be reduced with the aforementioned targeted treatment methods and even more. However, it is often better to prevent the mayhem from occurring in the first place. The prostate health should be taken care of early enough to prevent and reduce the chances of prostate related diseases from occurring.

Interestingly, your lifestyle can determine the health of your prostate. It is recommended that men eat healthy prostate diet such as pumpkin, berries, nuts, green tea, watermelon, vegetables etc and reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods such as red meat, processed meat, and so forth. The prostate should be exercised. One of the functions of prostate massagers is to vigorously exercise the prostate but you can keep the prostate healthy early enough through regular exercises. Men should have a quality sex life celibate lifestyle may be morally right but it is not healthy for the prostate. Finally, make sure you visit your doctor often to know the health status of your prostate and deal with any prostate-related condition early enough.

What Does A High Psa Mean

PSA levels can be affected by several factors and a rise in PSA may indicate:

    • prostate inflammation.
    • prostate cancer.
    • recent ejaculation.

Alone, PSA levels are not good measures of prostate health. Your medical team will need to assess other risk factors. They may also perform a DRE to make an accurate diagnosis.

Prostate Gland Size: Why Is It Important

Thousands of men are diagnosed with a prostate condition every year. They experience both disease and treatment-associated complications that impair normal functions.

The impact of prostate conditions on quality of life remains a major concern for aging men. Common prostate conditions have a complicated relationship with the prostate glands volume.

On the one hand, these conditions enlarge the prostate gland. An enlarged prostate presses on the surrounding tissues/organs to cause urinary, sexual, and bowel symptoms that reduce your quality of life. On the other, the effectiveness of different therapeutic approaches for prostate disease may depend on the prostate glands size.

A significant proportion of men with enlarged prostate require surgery to treat their symptoms. However, balancing the benefit of surgical interventions for a large prostate with the risk of treatment side effects is a significant challenge.

Despite the apparent improvements in the treatment of this condition by less invasive options, immediate clinical intervention is not always necessary. Here, we discuss the relationship between prostate size, prostate health, and quality of life. The article also offers some insight into the potential ways to maintain a healthy prostate.
