Medical Oncology For Advanced Prostate Cancer

The Top Docs at New Jersey Center for Prostate Cancer & Urology

If you have advanced or recurring prostate cancer, our medical oncologists will use the latest therapies to provide effective prostate cancer care. They participate in a range of prostate cancer clinical trials that provide you with access to the most promising treatments. Depending on your specific situation, your prostate cancer treatment plan may include:

  • Hormone TherapyHormone therapy is used to lower the levels of male hormones in your body to prevent prostate cancer cells from growing. You may be a good candidate for hormone therapy if your prostate cancer comes back after previous treatment or if your prostate cancer has spread and is unable to be treated with surgery or radiation. Although hormone therapy is usually used to treat advanced or recurring cases of prostate cancer, it can be used in combination with radiation therapy or before radiation therapy in some situations.
  • ChemotherapyChemotherapy treats cancer using medications that are given through an intravenous injection or pill and travel throughout your body. If your prostate cancer has spread to other areas of your body or if hormone therapy is not working, chemotherapy may be an option for you.
  • Vaccine TreatmentOur medical oncologists offer a vaccine called Provenge, which helps your immune system to fight prostate cancer cells. Vaccine therapy may be an option if your prostate cancer is not responding to hormone therapy.

Advanced Care For Prostate Cancers

Nearly all types of prostate cancer start in the cells of the prostate gland, which make prostate fluid. These types of cancer are called adenocarcinomas, and are the most common type of prostate cancer. Other types of cancer can also start in the prostate such as small cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma and sarcomathough those types are rare. Noncancerous growths in the prostate include benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia . In most cases, prostate cancer is found before it has spread to other parts of the body so it can be easier to treat and cure than other types.

Radiation Therapy For Advanced Prostate Cancer

Radiation therapy can be used in combination with surgery and other therapies to treat advanced prostate cancer, especially in cases when cancer cells have broken through the prostate, there is a high risk of recurrence, or not all cancer cells were removed during surgery.

External beam radiation therapy such as IGRT can be combined with hormone therapy or internal radiation therapy called brachytherapy, which involves placing tiny radioactive pellets directly into your prostate to deliver targeted radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy also can be used as a palliative treatment to relieve pain or to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of your body. Hackensack is also one of only a few medical centers to offer an injectable therapy called Xofigo®, for prostate cancer that has spread to your bones.

While the exact cause of prostate cancer may not be known, a mans risk is higher if a man is over the age of 50 and if an immediate blood relative has had prostate cancer. Additionally, race is a factor as the disease is more common in African American men than white men.

The following clinical experts from the Prostate Cancer Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey are available for comment on this topic:

The Importance Of A Prostate

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men in the United States. The key to curing prostate cancer is early detection. The PSA Screening is a noninvasive diagnostic test that measures the blood level of PSA, a protein that is produced by the prostate gland. The higher a man’s PSA level, the more likely it is that he has prostate cancer.Throughout New Jersey, primary care physicians are no longer screening many of the men most vulnerable to prostate cancer for the potentially fatal disease–and worse yet, few are aware that their physicians have stopped administering regular screenings.
