How Does Rezm Water Vapor Therapy Work

Rezm Water Vapor Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses the natural energy stored in water vapor, or steam, to remove excess prostate tissue that is pressing on the urethra.

Rezm Therapy is typically performed right in your urologists office, or at an outpatient surgery facility and completed in one short appointment.

During each 9-second treatment, sterile water vapor is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue. When the steam contacts the prostate tissue, all the stored energy is released into the tissue. Your doctor will determine the amount of treatments you need, based on the size of your prostate.

Over time, your bodys natural healing response absorbs the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms.

Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, and maximum benefit may occur within three months.*1,2 Patient responses can and do vary.

    Water Vapor Treatment For Prostate

Dr Clavell performs the Rezm therapy in the clinic or outpatient setting. The doctor performs a cystoscopy to evaluate the inside of the urinary channel. With a hand-held device, Rezm applies radio-frequency energy to a few drops of water to create vapor . That water vapor is then injected into the prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. The steam releases the energy into the cell membranes and will gently and immediately damage those cells by causing cell death. Over time, your body will absorb the treated prostate tissue and the urinary channel will re-open, relieving you of your urinary symptoms.

What To Expect With Steam Therapy

Steam therapy is performed under local anesthesia in the clinic. Most patients report mild discomfort during treatment but no pain. No incisions are needed.

During the treatment, a physician inserts a small needle into the urethra and positions it within the prostate gland. In nine seconds, the needle produces a 2-centimeter-wide steam ball that shrinks surrounding prostate tissue. It does not carry heat outside the prostate or affect other surrounding tissues. The number of treatments increases with prostate size but can be completely treated during one visit.

The needle is removed, and a temporary catheter is placed to drain urine from the bladder. This catheter is usually removed after three to five days.

Most patients can return home the same day as steam therapy and resume regular activities within a few days. Initially, benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms may worsen before they improve. This is because the treatment causes some swelling. Some patients start to experience fewer benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms within two weeks, and most see improvements by six weeks.

The procedure is performed as a day stay procedure under sedation or a brief general anaesthetic. A telescope with the attached steam delivery device is inserted into the urethra. A needle deployed from the device is inserted into the prostate. Steam is delivered along the needle in 9 second injections. The total number of injections is determined by the size of the prostate gland. The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. A suprapubic catheter is left in the bladder for 2-4 weeks afterwards. The catheter allows for easy bladder emptying during the period of prostate swelling.

    How Water Vapor Therapy Works

This minimally invasive procedure to remove excess prostate tissue is conducted in your doctors office, under local anesthesia. Your urologist will use a special instrument inserted through the urethra. It quickly turns water into steam, and its this thermal energy that shrinks enlarged prostate tissue. The tissue is destroyed in mere seconds and the process does so without harming healthy nearby tissue. During your bodys natural healing response to the procedure, the destroyed tissue is removed and eliminated, allowing the urethra to more fully open, and thus, eliminating your BPH symptoms.

Treat Prostate Gland Enlargement With Water Vapor No Surgery Needed

Prostate gland enlargement is commonly found in men over 50 years old. The primary cause of the enlargement is changes in male hormones as one ages.

In present days, a water vapor-based technology, called Rezum water vapor therapy, is used to treat prostate enlargement without requiring a surgery. This procedure takes only 1015 minutes to complete.

Dr. SantaponChamnarnprai, a surgeon specialized in urology at Vejthani Hospital, explained that when a prostate gland is enlarged, it may compresses the urethra and causes it to be narrowed. This may lead to painful urination, frequent urinations at night, inability to hold urine, and inability to completely empty the bladder.

General treatment for prostate enlargement includes changing of habits, such as reducing water intake at night, and lowering consumption of caffeinated drinks including tea and coffee.

The disease can also be treated with medications that reduce contractions of muscle of the prostate gland. The medications will improve painful urinating symptoms so it is crucial to be taken continuously.

However, for those with severe symptoms, such as inability to urinate and have bloody urine, doctor may consider transurethral resection of the prostate using a resectoscope, which is a surgical procedure. This is to prevent complications such as infections and chronic kidney disease.

How Can Steam Be Used To Treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
