Chances are youve used baking soda to cook, freshen up your refrigerator and brighten your smile, but a study published in the journal Cell says this cheap, simple substance may help chemotherapy attack cancer.
Chemotherapy works by destroying actively growing cells, but tumors often cut off the oxygen supply of cells inside of them. This causes the cells to shut down, making it difficult for chemotherapy to work.
Scientists at Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and Moffitt Cancer Center looked at breast and colon cancers in mice and saw an increase in cell activity after giving the mice water mixed with baking soda, also known as bicarbonate soda. In fact, the entire tumor lit up with activity.
It works like this:
Many cells in solid tumors have their oxygen supply shut off in a process known as hypoxia. This causes the pH levels of the cells to drop and become acidic. When this happens, the cells stop working properly. They stop producing proteins and their metabolism is disrupted, so they become inactive or dormant. If these dormant cells are cancerous and not responsive to treatment, they may reactivate when the original tumor is removed, causing the cancer to grow again.
Since baking soda can neutralize acid, the researchers believe drinking it could reduce a tumors acidity and bring dormant cells back to life, making them easier targets for chemotherapy.
What Are Ph Levels
Remember back in chemistry class when you used litmus paper to check the acidity level of a substance? You were checking the pH level. Today, you might encounter pH levels while gardening or treating your pool.
The pH scale is how you measure acidity. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline .
A pH level of 7 is neutral. Its neither acidic nor alkaline.

The Baking Soda Formula For Cancer
To make the baking soda natural cancer remedy at home, you need maple syrup, molasses or honey to go along with the baking soda.
In Dr. Sircus book, he documented how one patient used baking soda and blackstrap molasses to fight the prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. On the first day, the patient mixed 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of molasses in a cup of water.
He took this for another 3 days after which his saliva pH read 7.0 and his urine pH read 7.5.
Encouraged by these results, the patient took the solution 2 times on day 5 instead of once daily. And from day 6 10, he took 2 teaspoons each of baking soda and molasses twice daily.
The next day, the patient had a bone scan and too other medical tests. His results showed that his PSA level was down from 22.3 at the point of diagnosis to 0.1.
Another baking soda formula recommends mixing 90 teaspoons of maple syrup with 30 teaspoons of baking soda.
To do this, the maple syrup must be heated to become less viscous. Then the baking syrup is added and stirred for 5 minutes until it is fully dissolved.
This preparation should provide a 10-day supply of the baking soda remedy. 5 7 teaspoons per day is the recommended dose for cancer patients.
Care should be taken when using the baking soda remedy to treat cancer. This is because sustaining a high pH level can itself cause metabolic alkalosis and electrolyte imbalance. These can result in edema and also affect the heart and blood pressure.
Baking Soda Acid And Cancer
New research delves deeper into this mechanism and finds an incredibly simple way to reverse it: baking soda.
The study took place at the Wistar Institute and the University of Pennsylvania, both of which are located in Philadelphia. The scientists published their results this week in the journal Cell .
Lysosomes, the minuscule bags of enzymes that break down proteins and other biomolecules, were found to play a key role.
The lysosomes of interest are usually situated next to the nucleus. However, when conditions are more acidic which develops during hypoxia protein motors transport lysosomes carrying mTOR to other locations.
This movement of mTOR away from the nucleus also transports it away from a protein called RHEB, which is essential for it to function. Without its primary activator, mTOR activity is reduced, the cells processes slow down, and most metabolic activity stops.
The study was led by Chi Van Dang, scientific director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research he explains why this occurs, saying, Cells dont want to make proteins or other biomolecules when theyre under stress. They want to slow things down and only awaken when things return to normal.

What The Research Says
Most research on the effect of baking soda on cancer cells has come from laboratory experiments and animal studies. Until more clinical studies are performed on humans, its best to approach the use of baking soda with caution. Even then, use it only under the direction and supervision of your healthcare provider.

Baking Soda Could Improve Cancer Treatment Study Finds
Baking soda could offer a cheap and accessible aid to cancer therapies.
A new study has found that baking soda could make cancer treatments more effective at fighting drug-resistant tumors. The findings, which appear in the journal Cell, are based on researchers discovery that acidic conditions can cause cancer cells to go dormant, allowing them to hide from treatment.
Many of the therapies we have chemotherapy, targeted therapy work in cells that are actively functioning and dividing, said lead author Chi Dang. When you awaken cells from a resting state into an active state, they become more vulnerable to cancer therapy.
Researchers began by looking at hypoxia, or low oxygen levels, which scientists have long connected with drug resistance. Recent studies have theorized that a special protein resulting from hypoxia could be blocking cell division, leading to dormancy.
But this study finds an alternative explanation: acid, which cells produce when oxygen is low.
What weve discovered in this study is that theres a very rapid mechanism by which low pH, or acid itself, turns off a key toggle in the cells that controls the cells ability to make proteins, Dang said.
In other words, it prevents cells from dividing. As their processes slow down, the cells go into hibernation, making them invisible to cancer treatments.

May 31, 2018, New York A Ludwig Cancer Research study has uncovered an entirely novel mechanism by which cells enter a state of dormancy as tissues starved of oxygen become increasingly acidic. The study, led by Chi Van Dang, scientific director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, has potentially significant implications for cancer therapy: Large swaths of solid tumors are often deprived of oxygen, and cells in such patches are thought to be a major source of drug resistance and disease relapses.
Published today in the journal Cell, the study details how in response to acidity cells turn off a critical molecular switch known as mTORC1 that, in ordinary conditions, gauges the availability of nutrients before giving cells the green light to grow and divide. That event, Dang and his colleagues show, shuts down the cells production of proteins, disrupting their metabolic activity and circadian clocks, and pushing them into a quiescent state. They also demonstrate that this acid-mediated effect might be relatively easy to reversea finding that could help improve a variety of cancer therapies.
Baking soda had previously been reported to enhance cancer immunotherapy by one of the co-authors of the new study, Robert Gillies of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, though the mechanism underlying the effect was unclear.
