Diagnosing Benign Prostate Enlargement

Does Your Prostate Size Matter? | Mark Moyad, MD MPH & Mark Scholz, MD at the PCRI Conference 2019

You might have several different tests to find out if you have an enlarged prostate.

A GP may do some of these tests, such as a urine test, but others might need to be done at a hospital.

Some tests may be needed to rule out other conditions that cause similar symptoms to BPE, such as prostate cancer.

Impact Of Estimation Method On Qualification For Brachytherapy

Different numbers of patients fit the prostate volume eligibility criteria for brachytherapy when disparate scanning modalities were used to calculate gland size. Of the 70 patients examined, all except 4 were eligible for brachytherapy when prostate volumes were calculated using the ellipsoid ultrasound method . Of the 4 patients deemed ineligible on ellipsoid ultrasound measures, 2 met eligibility criteria for brachytherapy based on erMRI measures of volume.

Among the remaining 66 patients deemed anatomical candidates for brachytherapy based on ellipsoid ultrasound measures , 22 did not qualify for brachytherapy based on volumes measured using one or both of the other scanning modalities. In particular, 16 patients would not have qualified on erMRI and 10 patients would not have qualified based on contoured ultrasound measures .

6 of the 66 patients who were considered candidates for brachytherapy as determined by the ellipsoid ultrasound technique for measuring prostate volume had prostates < 20 mL on erMRI and 10 patients had glands measuring > 60 mL on erMRI . 7 of the 66 patients who were anatomically good candidates for brachytherapy on ellipsoid ultrasound had prostate sizes < 20 mL on contoured ultrasound, and 3 patients had volumes > 60 mL .In total, the management of 24/70 patients would have changed if patient prostate size had been measured by a method other than ellipsoid TRUS .

Is A Prostate Massage The Same Thing As Trying For A Prostate Orgasm

Yes. If you massage the prostate in a way that feels good, youre probably going to have an orgasm if you keep at it.

Some doctors recommend prostate massage therapy to help relieve the symptoms of certain conditions, such as painful ejaculation prostatitis.

Yep! Though evidence on the efficacy of prostate massage for certain conditions is somewhat limited, it does appear to have some benefits.

Can I Increase The Size Of My Penis

The decision to try to increase the size of your penis should be made carefully with the consultation of a urologist. The Journal of Urology study recommended that only men with a flaccid penis length of less than 1.6 inches or an erect penis of less than 3 inches should be considered as candidates for penile-lengthening treatment.

Before pursuing your options, you should get a psychological evaluation and talk with a therapist about your concerns.

You and your therapist should address questions such as, Do you have an unusually small penis, or is it at or near average size? and Do you have an unrealistic perception of your penis or unrealistic ideas about what an average-sized penis is?

You should try psychological counseling before any treatment.

If youre considering treatment, you have some options.

One type of surgical procedure is done on the ligament that attaches your penis to the pubic bone inside your body. The operation allows for more of your penis to extend outside your body.

Surgery involving a skin graft around the penis shaft to increase girth is also possible.

Some men benefit from liposuction around their pubic bone to help make the part of their penis covered by a fat pad more prominent.

Inflatable penile prosthetics, which are surgically inserted into the penis, are also effective in treating erectile dysfunction and for penis lengthening.

Impact Of Estimation Method On Psa Density

Prostate Gland : definition, size, diseases and risks ...

Each of the different scanning modalities was also used to calculate a PSA density. Using ellipsoid ultrasound volumes, 38 patients had a PSA density0.15 ng/dl, which is the cut-off for the very low-risk group that is commonly offered active surveillance . When volume was determined by erMRI, 34 patients were deemed to have PSA density0.15 ng/dl, while 38 patients were categorized as having PSA density0.15 ng/dl using contoured ultrasound estimates of volume.

Facts About Prostate Milking

By definition prostate milking is an internal stimulation of the prostate gland located inside the male rectum. This is also referred to as prostate massage.

This technique is commonly used around the world, and its getting increasingly popular in North America and worldwide. Further in the article we discuss the different massage techniques available, and how to get the most out of each one.

As you can see there are many methods that men can use to milk their prostate. Keep in mind that in addition to the sexual benefits that prostate massage can provide there are other health benefits as well.

  • Reduces inflammation, pain and discomfort
  • Improves muscle tone of pelvic floor
  • Improved blood flow which delivers more oxygen, nutrients, and white blood cells
  • Prevents buildup of prostatic fluid
  • Improves the effectiveness of antibiotics
  • Increased stimulation of the prostate helps raise testosterone and help shrink the prostate gland slightly
  • Enhances sexual enjoyment and pleasure

Size And Other Body Parts

What Is a Normal PSA for a Man Without Prostate Cancer? | Ask a Prostate Expert, Mark Scholz, MD

A statistically significant correlation between penis size and the size of other body parts has not been found in research. One study, Siminoski and Bain , found a weak correlation between the size of the stretched penis and foot size and height however, it was too weak to be used as a practical estimator. Another investigation, Shah and Christopher , which cited Siminoski and Bain , failed to find any evidence for a link between shoe size and stretched penis size, stating “the supposed association of penile length and shoe size has no scientific basis”.

There may be a link between the malformation of the genitalia and the human limbs. The development of the penis in an embryo is controlled by some of the same Hox genes as those that control the development of the limbs. Mutations of some Hox genes that control the growth of limbs cause malformed genitalia .

What Is The Prostate

The prostate is a part of the male reproductive system, which includes the penis, prostate, seminal vesicles, and testicles. The prostate is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra . It produces fluid that makes up a part of semen.

As a man ages, the prostate tends to increase in size. This can cause the urethra to narrow and decrease urine flow. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, and it is not the same as prostate cancer. Men may also have other prostate changes that are not cancer.external icon

Size Preferences Among Sexual Partners

In a small study conducted by University of TexasPan American and published in BMC Women’s Health, 50 undergraduate women were surveyed by two popular male athletes on campus about their perceptions of sexual satisfaction and it was concluded that the width of a penis feels better than the length of a penis, when subjects are asked to choose between the two . It was also concluded that this may show that penis size overall affects sexual satisfaction since women chose between the two options they were given.

In a cover story by Psychology Today, 1,500 readers were surveyed about male body image. Many of the women were not particularly concerned with penis size, and over 71% thought men overemphasized the importance of penis size and shape. Generally, the women polled cared more about width than men thought, and less about length than men thought, although the strength of caring for either among women showed a similar pattern.

Another study, conducted at Groningen University Hospital, asked 375 sexually active women the importance of penis size the results of which showed that 21% of women felt length was important and 32% felt that girth was important.

According to studies, when asked to estimate the length of their partners penis, most would say a size significantly smaller than what their partner was recorded to be. Suggesting that perception of size is not entirely accurate.

This diagram shows the location of the prostate, in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the prostate, it is called prostate cancer. Not including skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men.

Blood And Lymphatic Vessels

Benign prostate enlargement

The prostate receives blood through the inferior vesical artery, internal pudendal artery, and middle rectal arteries. These vessels enter the prostate on its outer posterior surface where it meets the bladder, and travel forward to the apex of the prostate. Both the inferior vesical and the middle rectal arteries often arise together directly from the internal iliac arteries. On entering the bladder, the inferior vesical artery splits into a urethral branch, supplying the urethral prostate and a capsular branch, which travels around the capsule and has smaller branches which perforate into the prostate.

The veins of the prostate form a network the prostatic venous plexus, primarily around its front and outer surface. This network also receives blood from the deep dorsal vein of the penis, and is connected via branches to the vesical plexus and internal pudendal veins. Veins drain into the vesical and then internal iliac veins.

The lymphatic drainage of the prostate depends on the positioning of the area. Vessels surrounding the vas deferens, some of the vessels in the seminal vesicle, and a vessel from the posterior surface of the prostate drain into the external iliac lymph nodes. Some of the seminal vesicle vessels, prostatic vessels, and vessels from the anterior prostate drain into internal iliac lymph nodes. Vessels of the prostate itself also drain into the obturator and sacral lymph nodes.

The prostate gland is a part of the male reproductive system that can enlarge with age, putting uncomfortable pressure on the urethra. This can cause urinary difficulties, urinary tract infections , and even bladder stones. By making lifestyle changes and using medication, most men can reduce their urinary troubles. A few men, though, may need to consider minimally invasive or traditional surgery options to feel their best.

How The Prostate Changes As You Age

Because the prostate gland tends to grow larger with age, it may squeeze the urethra and cause problems in passing urine. Sometimes men in their 30s and 40s may begin to have these urinary symptoms and need medical attention. For others, symptoms aren’t noticed until much later in life. An infection or a tumor can also make the prostate larger. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any of the urinary symptoms listed below.

Tell your doctor if you have these urinary symptoms:

  • Are passing urine more during the day
  • Have an urgent need to pass urine
  • Have less urine flow
  • Feel burning when you pass urine
  • Need to get up many times during the night to pass urine

Growing older raises your risk of prostate problems. The three most common prostate problems are inflammation , enlarged prostate , and prostate cancer.

One change does not lead to another. For example, having prostatitis or an enlarged prostate does not increase your risk of prostate cancer. It is also possible for you to have more than one condition at the same time.
