Important Facts To Know About Cycling And The Prostate

Many people assume that men who cycle long distances will inevitably end up with prostate issues. While there are studies that have connected increased rates of prostate cancer in individuals who train for eight hours a week or more, these statistics arent the norm. On the contrary, there are plenty of positive reasons that you should continue to ride your bike, especially as you get older. Always speak with your doctor regarding new exercise regimens and if you feel any discomfort or notice signs of a problem, seek medical attention as soon as possible. When it comes to the prostate, the early you treat issues, the better.

Frequent Cycling And Prostate Risks

Is there a link between frequent cycling and the risk of developing prostate cancer?

A new study has raised concerns for long-distance male cyclists. Researchers found that cyclists who ride the mostseveral hours a week may face a higher risk of prostate cancer. But the studys results are not conclusive and mostly add fuel to an ongoing debate.

As part of the study, more than 5,000 male cyclists from 2012 to 2013 were surveyed. Just under 1 percent of the men reported being diagnosed with prostate cancer. But those who cycled mostmore than 8.5 hours a week were more likely to have prostate cancer than the other men.

Of the 498 men who cycled the most, 17 said they had prostate cancer. Of those who biked the least, three out of 511 said they had prostate cancer, the findings showed.

Difficult to InterpretHowever, serious cyclists should not be concerned, critics of the study say, because the research involved a relatively small number of participants, and it was based on anonymous online responses. Whats more, the study does not prove theres an actual connection between cycling and prostrate cancer.

Since the study was Internet-based, there was no opportunity for interview or physical examination, which limits the ability to explore the reported diagnoses further, the study itself says.

Cyclists Should See Their Urologist Regularly

Men over 40 should see their urologist regularly regardless of their activity level. This allows you to keep an eye on your prostate health and catch any signs of cancer before it spreads into something more serious. If youre new to cycling, talk to your doctor prior to beginning any vigorous routines. You should also speak to them regarding any questions, concerns, and to receive a baseline health exam before you begin cycling. This allows you to track your health and see how cycling impacts your body.

Staying active as you age is one of the best ways to support a healthy urologic system. Many common conditions associated with the prostate and urinary system occur due to age, diet, activity level, and other risk factors. They are not definitively caused by cycling. Make Sure Your Psa Is As Accurate As Possible

The PSA is never meant to be a one-shot reading its not a constant number, forever set in stone like the Ten Commandments. Instead, its more like a Polaroid snapshot a quick capture of one moment in time. PSA fluctuates thats why its good to follow the general trend of the number over time, instead of just looking at one reading and saying with absolute confidence that a man definitely does or does not have prostate cancer.

That said, if youre getting a PSA test, lets make sure its as accurate as possible. Here are some things that can artificially raise or lower your PSA. A couple of these can be avoided as for the rest, be sure to tell your doctor.

Dont get your PSA tested if you have a urinary tract infection. This will cause your PSA level to be elevated, says New York University urologist Stacy Loeb, M.D. Urinary retention will also cause an elevation in PSA.

Dont ejaculate for at least two days before you get the PSA test. This can send more PSA into the bloodstream and can artificially raise your PSA level.

Dont get the PSA test after your rectal exam. Your doctor should know this, but sometimes it happens. The rectal exam, which stimulates the prostate, can also cause PSA to be released into the bloodstream. This is an avoidable cause of unnecessary worry!

Dont work out right before your PSA test. Vigorous exercise can cause a bump in PSA, with bicycle riding being the biggest culprit.

    Do tell your doctor if:

The Effect Of Physical Exercise On Pca Biomarkers

    Can Cycling Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

In the examination of PCa biomarkers, the study design resulted in an increase of both analyzed forms of PSA . By testing participants of the same age , we mention two essential studies based on measurements of PSA in men after bicycle riding. Although the level of physical activity differed modestly, both studies describe an elevation in post-ride specimens and, thus, are consistent with our findings. It is noteworthy that Kindermann et al. showed that one hour cycle ergometer activity increased not only tPSA, but also fPSA .

Contrary to that, our study concurs with the data obtained in other studies. For instance, Saka and colleagues determined that a 300-km bicycle ride does not impact the performance of tPSA and fPSA nevertheless, the study design is not comparable to our study, due to the tested cohort. In contrast to our cohort, they involved athletes and student volunteers with an average age of 22.4 and 24.4 years, respectively. Other studies with contradictory results can be found nevertheless, a closer look reveals that their methodologies varied in many parameters, including the age, timing of the blood sampling and the duration and intensity of physical exercise thus, the comparison is considerably hindered. Overall, it can be stated that similarly to a disorganization of prostate cells during PCa development, physical activity can irritate the cells to form transient pores for the leakage of PSA into blood .

Are Riding Bicycles Linked To Prostate Problems

Men who are having issues with prostate health heed this warning: bicycle riding can aggravate your current condition. Take into account the basic design of the seat and you will see that it can deliver pressure to the prostate area which can exacerbate the condition. While we are not saying to completely stop riding a bicycle, it is important to lessen any activity that would put strain around the lower part of the body for those with prostate problems.

But Is Cycling A Mortal Enemy Of Your Prostate

Other studies show that excessive cycling could irritate the prostate or aggravate prostatitis. Scientists of University College London did not discover any connection between cycling and man sexual performance.

Nevertheless, cyclists who ride for more than eight hours a week have a higher risk of prostate cancer than cyclists who ride for less than four hours . Besides, for cyclists who tend to practice to overexertion, the bike seat may level up the indicators for the PSA test .

Besides these problems, the risks of cycling well depend on the type of seat and the exercises intensity. We should be careful not to overexert ourselves in riding, especially if we are high-risk patients.

Also, consider bike saddles. Some of them are made of leather and are not breathable at all. These leather saddles increase the temperature in the perineal area. Additionally, they create pressure upon the pudendal nerve and may cause a saddle sore, numbness, and other problems .

Blame It On The Bike Seat

When you sit on a chair, your weight is distributed across both buttocks. This takes pressure off the perineum, a region of the body that runs from the anus to the sex organs. It contains the nerves and arteries that supply the penis in men and the clitoris and labia in women. Sitting on a bicycle seat puts pressure on the perineum, compressing those crucial nerves and arteries. This can lead to loss of sensation and other problems.

Nerve damage accounts for the penile numbness that some male bikers experience. Pressure on the pudendal artery can add to this nerve injury to produce temporary or prolonged erectile dysfunction. A narrow bike seat can reduce blood flow to the penis by as much as 66%, and even a broad seat may reduce flow by 25%. The same processes account for bicycling-related sexual problems in women.

The Initial Causes Bicycle Riding Prostate Problems

Can Bicycle Riding Cause Prostate Problems

One of the first symptoms of prostate issues is pain or tenderness in the groin or lower back. This can be the result of a noncancerous condition called enlarged prostatic tissue, or it could be an infection of the bladder. In either case, its important to see a doctor as soon as possible. If youre suffering from prostate pain, you may want to consider reducing your caffeine intake.

Another symptom of a potentially enlarged prostate is difficulty starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. These symptoms are not serious, but theyre still alarming. Most men put up with an enlarged prostate for years before seeking medical attention, but they typically seek treatment as soon as they notice symptoms. Even if you dont have symptoms, its worth getting checked to determine if you have any prostate issues.

If you experience nightly bathroom runs, you may be experiencing an enlarged prostate. You may be having difficulty starting a stream of urine, or you may even be dribbling or leaking during the day. These problems arent life-threatening, but can become a nuisance. You should not ignore these signs and seek treatment as soon as you notice them. If you feel any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor.

Essential Guide To Prostate Health For Cyclists

Responding to reports that cycling increases the risk of prostate cancer, oncologist Professor Robert Thomas provides some reassurance

    ByRichard Windsor, Cycling Weekly2017-09-28T07:00:11Z

The debate about prostate health and cycling has taken on renewed vigour recently following the publication of a study involving 5,000 cyclists.

It reported a six-fold increase in prostate cancer among cyclists who trained for eight hours or more per week, compared to men who trained for less than 3.75hr.

Of course, association does not prove causation. Men with cancer were more likely to volunteer for the study, and we know that intense cycling can increase levels of prostate-specific antigen in the blood for 24 hours meaning cyclists are more likely to be referred for investigation.

Not highlighted in the study was that the male subjects had a cancer rate three times lower than that observed in the general population.

This is most likely because there are over 180 beneficial biochemical changes that occur after exercise that reduce the risk of cancer by protecting our DNA, blocking cancer growth and spread .

Even so, we must take seriously the suggestion that cycling increases risk by elevating levels of reactive oxygen species .

Above all, its important to consume plenty of polyphenol-rich vegetables, spices, herbs, teas, berries and fruits.

So What Is It That Makes Cycling So Controversial

For men who ride their bikes occasionally, there really is no problem. For those who cycle more than eight hours a week, a traditional saddle can cause pain in the perineum, put pressure on the pudendal nerve and possibly on the prostate. The pudendal nerve passes through the perineum, the spot between the base of the penis and the anus. Prolonged compression of the nerve by the saddle can cause the scrotum to swell and cause erectile problems lasting up to a few hours after the ride.

Eventually, repeated friction of the perineum on the saddle can lead to the formation of a third testicle, which is actually a fibrous cyst, a condition that requires medical attention. Other conditions such as a damaged urethra, perineal contusion or a congested prostate may also cause discomfort. Men already suffering from an enlarged prostate or erection problems should avoid putting undue pressure on the area.

In any case, the damage is temporary and reversible and is caused by a bicycle saddle whose shape is not compatible with the cyclists body. The following precautions can help you avoid a range of problems:

How To Fix And Avoid Sore Wrists From Cycling

While the solid evidence viewpoint appears to be that bike riding rarely causes prostatitis, there is ample opinion from riders who already have prostatitis that cycling can makes it worse. For example, I gave up bike riding, and so do most other people with prostatitis, from what I can tell Your prostate is fairly close to the surface of the area that touches the seat of the average road bike. So every bump and pothole you go over is transmitted to that region.

    What Is The Prostate

The prostate is an integral part of the male reproductive system. Its a walnut size gland that sits below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate is responsible for creating fluid for semen, which is mixed with sperm to facilitate ejaculation and conception. The prostate is one of the only glands that never stops growing, which can lead to problems like benign prostatic hyperplasia enlarged prostatein older men. If cellular mutations occur, this ongoing growth can also contribute to increase rates of prostate cancer. Similarly, the prostate can cause common urologic conditions such as urgency, urinary retention, and prostatitis.

A Dozen Things That Can Raise Your Psa That Arent Cancer

Elevated PSA levels dont always spell cancer!

This month was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. So you went to your doctor for an exam and a Prostate Specific Antigen blood test. If your came Prostate Specific Antigen back 1.0 ng/ml or less, congratulations on a perfectly healthy prostate! However, if you are one of the many men whos Prostate Specific Antigen level is slightly to moderately elevated , not to worry, it doesnt necessarily mean cancer!

There are many things that can contribute to an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen level beside having cancer. Think of PSA as a barometer of overall prostate health. If levels start to rise then its time to take action as something is going awry.

  • Relative Prostate Volume If you have a small prostate your PSA level may be slightly lower than the average. Likewise, if a normal healthy prostate is larger than the average, PSA will be higher.
  • Sex Ejaculation causes a temporary rise in PSA level. Additionally, having too much sex puts stress on the prostate gland causing irritation which will elevate PSA levels. I recommend waiting 72 hours after sexual activity before having your PSA test.
  • Groin Injury Any type of groin injury such as a pulled muscle or impact to the groin area can elevate PSA levels. This could also include such things as a car accident, broken hip or pelvis.
