Vitamin D3 For Prostate Health

Saw Palmetto And Pygeum Africanum Are Both Worthless

Vitamin D3 in Prostate Cancer

In a recent article, “natural healing research guru”, Roger Mason says “For years now I’ve been explaining why saw palmetto, pygeum africanum, stinging nettles, pumpkin seeds and other similar herbs are useless, have no therapeutic effect, do not help prostate health in any way and are mere promotional scams. Yet, men keep buying countless millions of dollars worth of saw palmetto and other such worthless products every year.

And all of them are equally worthless because they contain such a low concentration of the supportive ingredient beta sitosterol.

The Beta sitosterol used in Prostate Miracle® Advanced Formula is literally two to three thousand times stronger than saw palmetto powder. This means you would have to eat two to three thousand capsules of saw palmetto powder to get an equivalent amount of beta sitosterol contained in one single capsule of Prostate Miracle® Advanced Formula. What about the extracts, one might ask? The very, very best saw palmetto extracts are only ten to one extractions so you would still need to eat 200 to 300 capsules of saw palmetto extract. Notice what they say on the extract bottles, “contains 85% fatty acids and sterols”. This means you get 99% fatty acids and maybe 1% sterols- if you’re lucky.

How Was Your Health Before Vitamin D

I had a concern about a diagnosis for prostate cancer in 2010. I went through all the specialists they all wanted to fix me. But I decided that I wanted to go into vigilant watching by having a PSA test done every 3 months.

In 2011, another biopsy was done and came up positive. At that point I decided to start taking much more vitamin D than was recommended at the time 10,000 IU/day. About half of my doctors thought I was crazy and that it was going to be toxic. Most of the health people at the time were recommending 1,000 2,000 IU/day.

In 2012 I had another biopsy. It came up completely negative. I met with my oncologist, I asked what happened? He told me to wait for another year 2013 It was completely negative. The oncologist wouldnt go on record, but he said that high levels of D can starve tumors. He is now recommending vitamin D to all of his patients, because he saw my success.

I no longer have any symptoms. My PSA is still elevated, but I feel much better and no one can find any prostate cancer.

What Ingredients Are In Prostate Health Supplements

  • Some of the most effective prostate supplements contain quercetin, which is a bioflavonoid.
  • Another effective ingredient is rye or Secale cornutum. The rye extract called cernitin is the active ingredient that has a positive effect on the prostate gland.
  • One of the most well-known prostate supplements is Serenoa repens, commonly known as saw palmetto.
  • Although lesser-known, another effective prostate supplement ingredient is Epilobium parviflorum. Selenium is a micronutrient that is essential for proper prostate health.
  • Lycopene is a compound in tomatoes that is greatly helpful for the prostate glands health. A supplement called Pygeum africanum has also proven useful in improving the performance of the prostate.
  • Beta-sitosterol is a nutrient that is in many prostate supplement products, and for good reason: it is effective in helping to decrease the size of the prostate in those with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
  • Urtica dioica, commonly known as stinging nettle, is an effective herb that can improve prostate health as well.
  • Finally, Cucurbita pepo and its extracts are useful in prostate supplements too.

How Much Vitamin D3 Per Day

Now that we have discussed the effectiveness of vitamin D3 for increasing levels of testosterone, we should turn our focus to the most appropriate dose of vitamin D3.

Different studies that have tested the effects that vitamin D3 has on testosterone levels used different amounts of vitamin D3, so it is quite difficult to determine a specific vitamin D3 dosage when a man wants to utilize the nutrient to treat their testosterone deficiency.

Apart from the fact that different doses were utilized, we also need to mention the fact that it is important not to consume too many vitamin D3 supplements on a daily basis. While a deficiency of vitamin D3 may contribute to lower testosterone levels and lead to many other symptoms, too much of this vitamin in the body can also be harmful to the wellbeing of the human body.

Too much vitamin D3 is also referred to as hypervitaminosis D or vitamin D toxicity. While rare, it should still be a concern amongst men who wish to obtain extra vitamin D supplementation per day for more testosterone. Mayo Clinic explains that hypercalcemia, which refers to a calcium buildup in the bloodstream, is the primary concern for this condition.

This amount has been shown to boost testosterone levels by an average of 25% in men who have testosterone levels that are considered lower than normal.

Saw Palmetto May Actually Be Harmful To Your Prostate

Three recent scientific studies, surprisingly indicated that saw palmetto may actually harm your prostate health! These studies, which were investigating the effect of saw palmetto on prostate tissue all came to the same conclusion: Saw palmetto has an effect similar to chemotherapy on prostate cells – it kills both unhealthy and healthy cells!

  • One study published in Prostate examined the effect of saw palmetto on stroma cells and on epithelial cells . The study was done on normal prostate tissue and on BPH tissues from patients treated with and without the saw palmetto. The conclusion was that saw palmetto damages the nuclear and mitochondrial membranes, and causes cellular death in the epithelium and stroma.
  • Another study published in the Journal of Urology investigated the effects of saw palmetto on primary cultures of fibroblasts , and epithelial cells from the prostate, epididymis , testes, kidney, skin and breast to determine if the action of saw palmetto is selective and specific to prostate tissue. This study concluded that saw palmetto caused damage and death in prostate tissue, though there were no similar changes observed in other types of cells.
  • A third study published in Prostate examined the effect of saw palmetto on benign prostatic hyperplasia . Again, the results showed there was widespread damage of intracellular membranes, including mitochondrial and nuclear membranes in both healthy and overgrown prostate tissue.

Vitamin D For The Management Of Prostate Cancer

Although vitamin D can be obtained from many natural dietary sources, such as fish liver oil, eggs, and dairy products, for the majority of men, this dietary source fails to meet the daily required levels., Instead, their major source of vitamin D is derived from synthesis in the skin through conversion of a precursor into vitamin D3, a reaction catalyzed by ultraviolet light present in sunlight. Vitamin D3 subsequently undergoes hydroxylation in the liver followed by the kidney, resulting in the synthesis of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, or calcitriol, which is the principal active hormonal form of vitamin D.

In addition to its well-known role in regulating calcium homeostasis in the body via its actions in the kidney, bone, intestine, and parathyroid glands, vitamin D also exhibits antitumorigenic properties, as demonstrated in in-vivo studies. This knowledge has led to epidemiologic studies investigating the association between vitamin D deficiency and prostate cancer. Accordingly, Schwartz and Hulka were the first to propose that low levels of vitamin D increase the risk of prostate cancer. These observations were based on prostate cancer mortality rates in the United States, which are inversely related to ultraviolet light exposure. This, in turn, has led to numerous studies investigating the antiproliferative properties of vitamin D on the prostate.

Men in the United States get prostate cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. It occurs mainly in older men. In the United States, about 1 in every 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Most men with prostate cancer do not die of it.

Complementary and alternative medicine is a form of treatment used in addition to or instead of standard treatments.

CAM use among men with prostate cancer is common. Studies of why men with prostate cancer decide to use CAM show that their choice is based on medical history, beliefs about the safety and side effects of CAM compared to standard treatments, and a need to feel in control of their treatment.

CAM treatments used by men with prostate cancer include certain foods, dietary supplements, herbs, vitamins, and minerals.

Different types of research have been done to study the use of CAM in prostate cancer. These study types include the following:

This PDQ summary has sections about the use of specific foods and dietary supplements to prevent or treat prostate cancer:

Questions And Answers About Lycopene

  • What is lycopene?

Lycopene is a carotenoid . It mixes with or dissolves in fats. Lycopene protects plants from light-related stress and helps them use the energy of the sun to make nutrients. Lycopene is found in fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, apricots, guavas, and watermelons.

The main source of lycopene in the United States is tomato-based products. Lycopene is easier for the body to use when it is eaten in processed tomato products like tomato paste and tomato puree than in raw tomatoes.

Lycopene has been studied for its role in the prevention of heart and blood vessel disease.

  • How is lycopene given or taken?

Lycopene may be eaten in food or taken in dietary supplements.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using lycopene?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using lycopene.

  • Have any studies of lycopene been done in people?

Population studies and clinical trials have been done to find out if lycopene can prevent or treat prostate cancer. Clinical trials have shown mixed results some studies have shown a lower risk of having prostate cancer or a decrease in prostate-specific antigen level, and others have not. There is not enough evidence to know whether lycopene can prevent or treat prostate cancer.

    Population and combined studies

  • Vitamin D3 And Prostate Health

A new study published by the journal Clinical Cancer Research , suggests that low blood levels of vitamin D may be linked to more aggressive and advanced cases of prostate cancer. The study suggests that vitamin D may play an important role in how prostate cancer starts and spreads, although it does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Researchers aren’t yet sure exactly how it comes into play or even if taking extra vitamin D might keep prostate cancer in check.

“We really don’t know, for certain, what role vitamin D plays in cancer . . . either the genesis or beginning of cancer . . . or in defining how aggressive the cancer may be,” he said. “Further research has to be done.”

What is known is that vitamin D plays several critical roles in how cells develop and grow.

“It seems to regulate normal differentiation of cells as they change from stem cells to adult cells. And it regulates the growth rate of normal cells and cancer cells.” said study author Dr. Adam Murphy, an assistant professor of urology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago.

Vitamin D is also known as the “sunshine vitamin” because skin makes it when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D levels tend to drop with advancing age, and deficiency is more common in seasons and regions that get less sunlight and in people with darker skin, which naturally blocks the sun.

What about the vitamin’s possible relationship to cancer?

    Prostate Cancer And Genome Damage

There is a strong link between the prevalence of markers of genome damage and cancer risk. Studies have shown that prevalence of chromosomal aberrations is 2.2-fold to 2.4-fold higher in cancer patients than in non-cancer controls, and that micronuclei formation, a marker for chromosomal instability, was associated with increased cancer incidence in a study of 6718 individuals. There is also evidence to link telomeres to cancer risk. Telomeres are repetitive TTAGGG DNA sequences that maintain genomic stability by protecting the ends of chromosomes they shorten in length over time in normal somatic tissues due to incomplete replication of the telomere. Telomere shortening is accelerated by oxidative stress, inflammation and cell proliferation and has been linked with induction of cell senescence which guards against survival of genomically abnormal cells. Evidence from prospective studies show positive associations between telomere length and various cancers, including that for low-grade and localised PC disease, possibly due to abnormal telomerase expression and telomere elongation, which enables the survival of genomically unstable cells, their unrestricted growth and their evolution into cancer. There is evidence to show that some micronutrients are essential to prevent genome damage but the specific impact of vitamin D is only just starting to be explored.

Tell Us A Little Bit About Yourself

    Mike Scott

My name is Mike Scott. I am 75 years old and live in Cedar Park, Texas. I retired in 2007 from biochemistry. I have been happily married for 33 years, with 3 grown children, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

I am in wonder because of all of the positive health effects that have resulted from vitamin D.

What Would You Recommend To Others Who Are In A Similar Situation

His tortoise Olivia, who gets extra vitamin D

I recommend that people take 45 IU/day per lb of body weight. I determined that number through my biochemistry research over the years. I tell all men in my family over 30 to have an annual PSA test and to take 5,000 IU of D3 every day. I also recommend checking baseline vitamin D levels twice a year winter & summer.

For people in the middle of cancer treatments, I tell my story first. They usually get excited, especially my black friends. I let them know that if they have adequate levels of vitamin D it will enhance and help some of their chemotherapy. I remind them that my background is in biochemistry, but it cant hurt for them to take vitamin D. I tell them to take a minimum of 4000 IU/day along with all of their other medicines.

Can Too Much Zinc Increase Your Risk Of Prostate Cancer

in 2003, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, theorized that taking too much zinc can actually increase the risk of getting prostate cancer. Though this study has not been duplicated nor was any explanation given, the main finding was that men who consumed more than 100 mg/day of zinc were 2.29 times more likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than men whose total zinc intake was less than 100 mg/day. Men whose zinc supplementation was 100 mg/day or less were not at increased risk for any kind of prostate cancer
