How To Take Cialis For Bph

The dose for Cialis for ED is different than the dose you would take for BPH. For erectile dysfunction only, men are normally advised to take their dose as needed about 1 hour before sexual activity. And, for ED, the strength used is normally 10mg – 20mg.

However, if you are taking Cialis for BPH , you take your dose every day, and the dose is normally the 5mg tablet. As with any medication, you need to follow your doctorâs instructions on dosing and how often to take your medication.

Whats The Cialis Dosage For Someone Whos 70 Years Old

Cialis dosages for someone who is age 70 years are the same as those for other adults. Details about these dosages are in the Cialis dosage section above.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of Cialis. Because of this, your doctor may decide to prescribe a lower dose than usual when you start taking Cialis. Then, if needed, they can adjust it over time to reach the amount thats right for you.

If you have additional questions about the use of Cialis in older adults, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Its important that you do not use more Cialis than your doctor prescribes. For some medications, taking more than the recommended amount may lead to side effects or overdose.

Cialis Licence Extended To Benign Prostate Enlargement

23 November, 2012By The Press Association

Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia can now be prescribed tadalafil , it has been announced.

Pharmaceutical maker Lilly has been licenced by the European Commission for the use of tadalafil to treat the symptoms of BPH – also known as benign enlargement of the prostate – having already had a licence to use it for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The move means doctors now have the option of prescribing a single medication to treat both conditions. Some 3.2 million men in the UK – a third of those aged over 50 – suffer from BPH symptoms while ED affects more than half those aged between 50 and 70. It is estimated some 1.15 million men in the UK are affected by both conditions.

Dr Geoff Hackett, a consultant in urology at Birminghams Good Hope Hospital, said it often transpired that patients were suffering with both conditions. He added that the new option would help make mens health management easier and more efficient.

Tadalafil helps increase smooth muscle relaxation which makes the diameter of blood vessels bigger, allowing more blood to flow into the penis, bladder and prostate. It works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase-5, which breaks down cycling GMP in tissues, causing reduced smooth muscle relaxation.

BPH interferes with the normal flow of urine, its symptoms including frequent, hesitant and painful urination as well as urinary retention.

Fda Approves Cialis To Treat Enlarged Prostate

Erectile Dysfunction Drug May Be Used for Patients With BPH

Oct. 6, 2011 — Cialis has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of enlarged prostate. It may also be used to treat men who have both enlarged prostate and erectile dysfunction at the same time.

Cialis is the first ED drug to be approved for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia . Commonly known as enlarged prostate, symptoms include difficulty starting to urinate, a weak urine stream, sudden urge to urinate, and frequent urination at night.

Eli Lilly’s Cialis was approved as an ED treatment in 2003. The new approval is based on clinical trials showing that 5 milligrams of Cialis once a day improve BPH symptoms.

“BPH can have a big impact on a patient’s quality of life,” Scott Monroe, director of the FDA’s division of reproductive and urologic products, says in a news release. “A large number of older men have symptoms of BPH. Cialis offers these men another treatment option, particularly those who also have ED, which is also common in older men.”

Men taking nitrate-based drugs, such as nitroglycerin, should not take Cialis as it can lead to dangerous drops in blood pressure.

The FDA also warns men already taking alpha-blockers for BPH not to add Cialis to their treatment regimen. The two types of drug have not been tested together and theoretically could lead to a drop in blood pressure.

Surgery Surgery Is Used To Treat Bph When Drug Therapy Stops Workingor To Treat Those Who Cant Urinate At All It Can Also Be Used To Relievesevere Symptoms

Transurethral resection of the prostate

Transurethral resection of the prostate removesprostate tissue through the urethra. It is the surgery most commonly used totreat BPH. While TURP relieves urinary symptoms in most men, urinary problemscan come back over time if the prostate starts to grow again. This is why youngermen may need to have this surgery more than once.

This surgery is done in an operating room. The doctor passes a resectoscope through the urethra to reach the prostate. A resectoscope is a type of endoscope . It has a thin wire that carries an electric current. The doctor uses the electric current to cut away prostate tissue around the urethra. The doctor then removes this tissue through the resectoscope.

The most common side effects of TURP include:

  • bleeding
  • infection
  • semen flowing into the bladder instead of out the end of the penis

In rare cases, you may develop erectile dysfunction orincontinence after TURP. But this surgery has a lower risk of these sideeffects than surgery to remove the prostate .

Examples of nitrates include:

  • isosorbide mononitrate
  • isosorbide dinitrate

However, in some cases, you doctor may give you a nitrate: for example, if you have chest pain and your life is at risk, and its been at least 48 hours since your last dose of Cialis. After you receive the nitrate, your doctor will likely monitor you to make sure your blood pressure doesnt drop to an unsafe level.

Cialis and alpha-blockers

Both Cialis and medications called alpha-blockers can cause a decrease in blood pressure. So taking these medications together can cause blood pressure to drop further.

If you have benign prostatic hyperplasia and are taking a medication called an alpha-blocker, you shouldnt use Cialis.

Cialis for treatment of enlarged prostate

Yes, Cialis can be used to treat ED after prostate surgery.

A clinical trial was done in people with ED who had surgery to have their prostate removed. The people used either Cialis or a placebo as needed. After 4 weeks, the people took a portion of a survey called the Index of Erectile Function . A higher score on the IIEF meant that erectile function was better, so ED symptoms improved.

The study showed that:

Cialis Use With Other Drugs

If youre taking Cialis, you usually wont have to use other medications with it.

But if you have a prostate condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia , your doctor may first prescribe a drug called finasteride .

Finasteride is a first-line treatment when medications are recommended for BPH. This is because the drug shrinks the prostate by blocking the growth of prostate cells. Cialis treats the symptoms of BPH by reducing the prostate gland muscle tone, but it doesnt block the growth of the cells.

Finasteride can help also ease symptoms of BPH, such as having to urinate suddenly and more often. However, this medication can cause negative sexual side effects such as and erectile dysfunction. To help ease these side effects, your doctor may have you also take Cialis.

If you have questions about using Cialis and finasteride, talk with your doctor.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Bph

Normally, the prostate adds fluid to semen. As you age, the gland can start to grow, which may cause problems.

The urethra, which is the tube urine travels through on its way out of the bladder, runs right through the prostate. Over time, the prostate can grow large enough to press down on and squeeze the urethra. This pressure narrows the exit.

This can make it more difficult for the bladder to release urine. Eventually, the bladder may become so weak that it cant release urine normally.

This can lead to symptoms such as:

  • a constant need to urinate
  • an urgent need to urinate
  • a weak urine stream
  • dribbling after urination

You can treat these symptoms with:

  • lifestyle changes, such as training the bladder to reduce bathroom trips or drinking fewer alcoholic and caffeinated beverages to reduce the urge to go
  • medicines that relax the muscles of the prostate and bladder
  • procedures to remove excess prostate tissue
