Foods And Other Things That Can Worsen Symptoms
Medications arent the only triggers of BPH symptoms.
Be careful about how much fluid you consume. The more you drink, the more youll feel the urge to urinate.
Stop drinking water and other fluids a few hours before you go to bed. Youll have less chance of being awakened in the middle of the night by an urgent need to use the restroom.
Diuretics cause your body to release more urine. Avoid drinks that may have a diuretic effect. These include:

Observe These Caveats If You Use Over
It’s 2 a.m. and you can’t sleep. Is it okay to take a nonprescription remedy? “They’re not meant for the long term, but it may be okay for an occasional night of problems with sleep,” says sleep expert Dr. Lawrence Epstein, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.
But which option should you reach for? Drugstore shelves are lined with a dizzying array of products promising a good night’s sleep. They fall into two categories: nonprescription medications and dietary supplements.

1. Prazosin is prescribed off-label to treat BPH.
The erectile dysfunction medication, tadalafil , is approved for treating enlarged prostate symptoms, and a combination pill, Jalyn, which contains both dutasteride and tamsulosin, is also available. Neither of those were included in the analysis that forms the basis of this report, so we do not discuss them. However, the pros and cons of combination therapy with an alpha blocker and a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor are discussed further below.
Are There Any Related Scientific Studies To Prostate Ultra
Yes. Prostate Ultra bases its supplement on research done by many academic institutions globally, most notably the National Center for Biotechnology Information and Harvard University. For an idea, these studies tell us that androgens arent the cause of enlarged prostates but rather an overwhelming amount of estrogen caused by the accumulation of cortisol or stress in our bodies.

How We Shrink The Prostate
The hormonal imbalance that leads to BPH is caused first of all in the gut.
Yes, the gut. I thought that was weird too when I first heard it.
But heres the thing: human gut bacteria has been with us since the dawn of time. It doesnt just keep us healthy it keeps us alive.
There are hundreds of types of bacteria. Each type has its own job to do.
When theyre healthy and plentiful our gut bacteria minimize inflammation, protect us from heart and kidney disease, manage our weight, regulate our cholesterol, stabilize our blood sugars, keep our moods consistent and perform dozens of other tasks that make our lives possible.
And guess what else these little helpers do for us?
They regulate, manage, and stabilize male hormones. In particular, they make sure the ratios of estrogen and testosterone are exactly how they need to be.
Because when those two get out of whack guess what you end up with?
Benign prostate hyperplasia.
But heres the problem. These bacteria are delicate. So they need exactly the right nutrition, the right conditions to thrive.
Western diets and lifestyles arent helpful in this regard at all. Its not your fault or mine. But over the years our valuable, life-saving gut bacteria are dying off at extraordinary rates. And were paying a hefty price for that.
Which explains why Westerners have heart disease, organ disease, obesity, and a range of metabolic conditions on a scale unheard of in some other parts of the world.
This is Scotts area of expertise.

Can An Enlarged Prostate Be Cured
An enlarged prostatealso referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition among men as they grow older. It is characterized by the natural enlargement of the prostate, a small gland situated between the bladder and penis. The urethra, or the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis, is surrounded by the prostate, and often becomes squeezed and compressed as a result of prostate enlargement. This can cause a weakened urine stream and related issues like a frequent urge to urinate and difficulty sleeping through the night.
Prostate enlargement tends to come with age. While its difficult to completely reverse an enlarged prostate, there are several treatments that can relieve symptoms, reduce the size of the prostate and help restore normal urine flow. In fact, many men with prostate enlargement are able to achieve a positive quality of life with non-surgical treatments.
Time Isnt On Your Side
Standard doctors advice to keep a watchful eye on the condition.Intervene if it becomes a real problem.
In my opinion, that was terrible advice.
The end-game of BPH can be urinary tract infections, kidney infections and at worst kidney failure.
Why would anyone risk going through any of this?
Thousands of men decided enough was enough. They decided to act rather than wait around. Which for me was the intelligent thing to do.

How An Enlarged Prostate Keeps You Up At Night
Many men may feel embarrassed when they start to experience the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, but its a common condition. In fact, the majority of men in their 60s, 70s, and 80s have an enlarged prostate.2
Although having an enlarged prostate is common, the urinary symptoms that accompany it may keep you and your partner up at night. These include:
- A frequent need to urinate, both day and night
- An urgent feeling of needing to urinate
- A sense that you cannot completely empty your bladder
- Weak or slow urinary stream
- Difficulty or delay in starting urination
- A urinary stream that stops and starts
As you can imagine, the frequent and urgent need to urinate leads to sleep disruptions throughout the night. You may find yourself getting up multiple times just to pee.
Getting up in the middle of the night repeatedly to use the bathroom doesnt just keep you from getting a good nights rest it can also disrupt your partners sleep quality. Although only 8 percent of men reported bothering their partner when they wake up to pee at night, 64 percent of women who were impacted by their partners enlarged prostate say it has disrupted their sleep.1
A New Treatment Option For Bph
A newer, nonsurgical treatment for BPH, called prostatic artery embolization , is available at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, says Ari Isaacson, MD, a vascular interventional radiologist who performs the procedure.
PAE is performed through a small puncture in the groin or the arm. A catheter is inserted through the artery and directed toward the prostate.
Once the catheter is positioned in the artery supplying blood to the prostate, tiny particles called microspheres are injected that plug up the artery, blocking blood flow. This is called embolization.
This process is then repeated on the other side, usually through the same original puncture, Dr. Isaacson says.

What Is The Best Over
Most over-the-counter sleep medicines are simply re-packaged antihistamines, sometimes with a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen . Antihistamines are drugs that are commonly used to treat allergy symptoms but that also have some sedating effects. They help promote drowsiness by blocking a chemical called histamine, which plays a role in regulating wakefulness. These OTC sleep aids are readily available at drugstores and supermarkets.
Most doctors say theres nothing wrong with taking an antihistamine occasionally to help you fall asleep. But, they caution that youre not likely to get high-quality sleep using one. You can suffer from side effects, including a next-day grogginess , dry mouth, feelings of agitation, sleep walking, and confusion, especially if youre elderly. Many people quickly build up a tolerance to the sedating effects of antihistamines, sometimes in a matter of weeks.
Some of the over-the-counter antihistamines more commonly used for sleep are:
- Diphenhydramine, found in Benadryl , Zzzquil, and Aleve PM, among others
- Doxylamine succinate, found in Unisom, Nyquil, and others
Antihistamines shouldnt be used by children under six or by anyone with breathing issues such as asthma, glaucoma, problems urinating , heart disease, high blood pressure, or thyroid problems. If you do opt to take an occasional antihistamine for sleep, steer clear of products with an added pain reliever unless you need one.

The Potential Downsides Of Medication
Even when medication does provide symptom relief, side effects may cause men to discontinue taking their prescriptions.4 More than one third of men with BPH taking medication have experienced unpleasant side effects including headaches, dizziness, weakness or lack of energy , ejaculatory dysfunction and erectile dysfunction.* This was the case for John B., a 62-year-old avid competitive runner who felt medication affected his training and running times, making him tired and sluggish. Just two weeks after starting the medication, he stopped taking it altogether and began to research other alternatives.
Sometimes, the reality of taking another pill every day or concerns about possible interactions with other medications is enough to dissuade patients from taking medication. Survey results confirm that most patients are interested in learning about alternative treatment options.*
Wrong Sleeping Positions Produce Damage To Prostate Health
Sleeping or lying in bed is an effective way to relax the whole body, especially the spine because the body is in full contact with the bed, which reduces the burden of resisting gravity when the body is upright. When people are lying, the spine no longer needs to bear the pressure and gravity, and the antagonistic muscles such as shoulder and neck, chest and back, waist and abdomen can be fully relaxed.

Melatonin Linked To Prostate Cancer Risk
ByCari Nierenberg20 January 2014
Men with higher levels of the sleep hormone melatonin may be less likely to develop prostate cancer, a new study suggests.
The research also revealed that men who had higher levels of melatonin in their urine had a 75 percent decreased risk of advanced prostate cancer, compared with men with lower melatonin levels.
“It’s notable that we found a stronger association between melatonin levels and more advanced prostate cancer,” said study researcher Sarah Markt, a doctoral candidate in the department of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
People’s melatonin levels are affected by the amount of sleep they get, and the quality of that sleep. The hormone is produced in the brain by the pineal gland in response to darkness.
Melatonin levels typically rise in the evening, promoting sleep, and peak during the night. Levels then fall in the morning, as sunlight and indoor light use increases, encouraging wakefulness.
But people who have irregular sleep schedules from shift work hours, as well as people who wake up a lot during the night and turn on the lights, disrupt their circadian rhythm the body’s internal clock and produce less melatonin, the researchers said.
The research was presented today at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on Advances in Prostate Cancer Research in San Diego. It has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The Path To Better Prostate Health
Because the PAE procedure does not involve surgery or physical removal of part of the prostate, patients will not see results immediately. The first changes are seen most commonly one to two months after the procedure, with continued improvement until about four months.
The most common side effects of PAE immediately after the procedure include urethral burning and increased urinary frequency. These side effects usually stop within a week.
The good news? According to Dr. Isaacson, about 75 to 80 percent of men treated with PAE experience a significant and lasting improvement.
UNC Medical Center is one of just a few hospitals in the U.S. that offers PAE to patients who are not enrolled in a clinical trial. Appointments for evaluation are available in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Hillsborough and Siler City. You can make an appointment or .

Sedatives And Sleeping Pills
Using sedatives and sleeping pills can present a problem, especially if you already have incontinence. They can decrease your awareness of the need to go to the bathroom while you are sleeping.
The best way to address thissituation, Dr. Rackley says, is to take other steps to relax and improve yoursleep. Getting more exercise to make you tired, for example, can help. Itsalso important to maintain a regular bedtime and wake-up schedule. Findingother ways to relax before bed meditation, reading a book or listening tosoothing music or sound effects can also help you sleep better.
New Technique May Help Men’s Nighttime Urination
Procedure partially blocks blood flow to the gland and appears to ease the night need, but skeptics exist
MONDAY, April 4, 2016 — Waking often in the night to urinate is a common problem among men who have an enlarged prostate, but an innovative new treatment has shown some promise in easing the problem, researchers are reporting.
The procedure, called prostatic artery embolization , involves placing microscopic spheres in the arteries that supply blood to the prostate gland to partially block the blood flow.
Reducing blood flow to the prostate causes the gland to soften and shrink, said lead researcher Dr. Sandeep Bagla, an interventional radiologist at the Vascular Institute of Virginia, in Woodbridge.
In their new study, Bagla and his colleagues show that PAE improves symptoms in men suffering from nocturia — waking up repeatedly during the night to urinate.
“Their urinary symptoms bothered them considerably less, and their quality of life also showed marked improvement,” Bagla said. “The improvement in quality of life stems directly from the fact that these men are getting a better night’s sleep.”
The findings were scheduled to be presented Monday at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s annual meeting, in Vancouver.
The study included 68 men who had the procedure done. Researchers were able to reach 46 of these patients one month later for follow-up, and all 46 reported fewer urinary symptoms and a better quality of life.
