How Does Laser Therapy Work

The tissue blocking your prostate is rapidly heated and vaporized and urine flow is almost immediately restored in most patients.

Typically, the procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and youre able to go home the same day. Many patients go home without a urinary catheter. Most patients experience no other effects on their lifestyle or bodily functions as a result of their laser surgery.

How Long Is The Healing Process

Most patients need at least one to two weeks of rest at home before they can return to work. Some patients may require three to four weeks of recovery time before going back to work, especially if the job is physically strenuous. No heavy lifting should be attempted during the recovery period however, patients are expected to walk and do light activities.

How Can I Reduce Enlarged Prostate Without Surgery

It’s based on the symptoms, either irritative or the obstructive symptoms, we can categorize patients as surgical candidates or to continue with the medical management. Those who predominate with irritative and mild obstructive symptoms, they are the better candidates to be on medical line of management, whereas those who are predominantly with features of obstructive symptoms, they are the best candidates for surgical treatmentbecause the satisfaction post-surgery is better with those who have more of obstructive features and for that reason we even classify patients based on the IPSS score that is mild, moderate and severe category, so moderate to severe persons are those who are the candidates who respond better to surgical kind of treatment and amongst medical treatment we have mainly two groups of medications. One is the alpha receptor blockers and the second is the anti-androgen or 5-Alpha reductase inhibitors.

Two investigators independently assessed the titles and abstracts of the searched results. The full text versions of those studies, which were potentially eligible, were then assessed. For the study design, selection criteria, participants characteristics, interventions, outcome measures, study duration, results and other data of each included study were extracted. Extracted contents were recorded on data extraction forms, which were designed according to the advice given in the Cochrane Handbook46. We contacted authors to seek additional information where data were not reported or not clear.

What Are The Side Effects Of Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate

The most common side effects include:

  • Temporary burning and bleeding during urination. Some blood may be seen in the urine for weeks after surgery. This is usually not an indication of anything serious, only that the healing process is not yet finished.
  • Urinary incontinence is expected in all patients immediately after surgery and they should wear pads for the first few days/weeks. This typically improves over the course of several weeks. Performing Kegel exercises can help decrease leakage from stress maneuvers such as coughing, sneezing, or lifting. The rate of long term leakage from stress maneuvers is low. Patients may also have leakage with urgency and this may be treated with medication. The risk of urge incontinence can be dependent on several factors including age, prostate size, symptoms, and other medical problems.
  • Erectile function is generally not significantly affected. A small percentage of patients have reported improved erectile function while a small percentage have reported decreased erectile function.

What Foods Are Good For Enlarged Prostate

There is nothing like good food or bad food for prostate enlargement. So the only thing what we advise is to avoid carbonated beverages and more fluid intake in the late hours of the day so that they are not disturbed by frequent urination or the lower unit tract symptoms at night. These things are to be kept in mind, as such food has nothing to do with the prostate enlargement.

Why Does Enlarged Prostate Cause Frequent Urination

So here again in enlarged prostate, it causes frequent urination. Its not mainly because the urine is excessively produced, its mainly because of overflow incontinence. Many times patient will not be able to completely evacuate or empty their bladder, in this case a person will be passing urine only intermittently and inadequately thats why a part of urine will always remain stagnant in the bladder and that will continuously irritate the bladder to go for frequent urination. Apart from that, once a person has that median lobe enlargement which is between the two lateral lobes that will relatively open the bladder neck which is a smooth muscle sphincter that will again lead to frequent urination.

What Happens During The Procedure

You usually have a general anaesthetic for this procedure. If you have other long-term medical conditions, such as problems with your heart or breathing, we may recommend you have a spinal anaesthetic instead with some sedation to make you comfortable. This means you have no feeling of pain from the waist down during the operation. If this applies to you the anaesthetist will let you know.Once you are in the operating theatre: We will pass a telescopic instrument called a cystoscope into your urethra and up into your bladder to examine it. The cystoscope is 2-3 millimetres thicker than the thickness of a pencil and has a tiny video camera on one end, so we can view images of your urethra and bladder on a television screen We will vaporise the prostate tissue through the cystoscope using a high-powered laser. We will place a catheter in your urethra and bladder to drain urine for the first 12 to 24 hours after your procedure. This is because things can be sore and swollen and the bladder can often seize up if we did not place a catheter.

Prostatic Artery Embolization Eliminates Side Effects Associated With Traditional Treatments

For men over 60, benign prostatic hyperplasia more commonly known as prostate enlargementis a common and uncomfortable condition. Most patients experience urinary frequency, urgency, and even retention. Until recently, treatments involved either medication or surgery, both of which come along with a host of side effects that include dizziness, bleeding, erectile dysfunction, and urinary incontinence.

Refined over the past decade, there is a little-known third option offered by interventional radiologists for men with prostrate enlargement. Called prostatic artery embolization , the procedure involves little more than a skin nick and catheterization.

PAE is an image-guided procedure, which means that interventional radiologists use X-ray and other imaging techniques to guide catheters to the exact area of the body being treated. With PAE, a catheter is inserted through a tiny incision in the patients wrist or groin and guided to the blood vessels that feed the prostrate. Then, tiny round particles are injected into the blood vessels, reducing the blood flow to the prostate. The entire procedure takes about one hour to perform and patients go home the same day.

With blood supply reduced, the prostate begins to shrink, relieving pressure on the urethra. Men usually see their symptoms relieved within days of the procedure.

Recovery time is minimal because there is no invasive surgery involved.

What Happens During A Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate Procedure

  • HoLEP requires the patient to be under general anesthesia . If a patient cannot have general anesthesia for some reason, a spinal anesthetic can be usedâthis allows him to remain awake but blocks all feeling from the waist down.
  • An injection of an antibiotic is given to reduce the chances of infection.
  • The patient is placed on his back with the legs raised during the procedure.
  • A surgical instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra . The resectoscope includes a camera that allows the surgeon to view the internal structure of the prostate gland, and to see where incisions are being made during surgery.
  • The laser is inserted into the resectoscope and is used to enucleate the enlarged prostate tissue from the capsule and then to seal up any blood vessels. The tissue that has been removed is deposited in the bladder.
  • The laser is removed from the resectoscope and is replaced by a morcellator. This device is used to suction out the tissue that was left behind in the bladder.
  • When tissue removal is complete, the resectoscope is withdrawn and a urinary catheter is put in place.

Medium And Long Term Side Effects

Its safe to drive after a couple of days, although a catheter may be needed.
