Latest Proton Therapy Study Shows Hypofractionated Proton Therapy As Safe And Effective For Patients With Low
A study published in in the International Journal of Particle Therapy by Dr. Slater and his team, highlights the results of their latest phase I/II hypofractionated proton therapy study at Loma Linda University Hospital.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and many of these patients have low-risk, early disease. Prostate cancer at these stages remains highly treatable with local control rates over 90% and very low rates of late morbidity commonly reported for a variety of treatment modalities. The focus then turns to the avoidance of unnecessary negative treatment-related side effects that can occur, particularly through the use of conventional treatments such as surgery and x-ray radiotherapy.
Proton radiation therapy has demonstrated itself to be an excellent option for low-risk prostate cancer as it delivers high control rates with very little toxicity. Proton beam thereby enhances the physicians opportunity to minimise risks for the patient.
The purpose of the study was to determine whether a hypofractionated proton radiotherapy regimen can control early-stage prostate cancer while maintaining low rates of side effects similar to results obtained using standard-fraction proton radiotherapy.
The 3-year biochemical progression-free survival rate was 99.3%, and the 5-year biochemical progression-free survival was 97.9%.

Loma Linda Cancer Center Celebrates 30 Years Of Proton Treatment
The James M. Slater, MD, Proton Treatment & Research Center at Loma Linda University Cancer Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The worlds first hospital-based proton therapy facility was a vision of Slater, who died in December 2019.
Slater, who championed and oversaw the Proton Treatment Centers creation, was determined to improve the quality of life for patients undergoing cancer treatment and was inspired to use proton therapy to do so. He began working with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in 1986 to plan the proton synchrotron and center, which resulted in the construction of one of the most complex pieces of medical equipment ever built.
For years, the Loma Linda University Medical Center Proton Treatment Center was the only place in the world to offer proton therapy for patient treatment and research in a hospital setting. After opening its doors in 1990, it remained the only hospital-based treatment center of its kind in the United States until 2001. It was renamed in Slaters honor in 2007.
The success of the Proton Treatment Center at LLU Cancer Center has prompted the establishment of 37 operational centers in the U.S. and 70 operational centers around the world. Additionally, another eight centers are under construction in the U.S. and 32 internationally.

What Are Treatment Side Effects
Cancer treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation, can damage normal cells. This can cause side effects like hair loss, mouth sores, and vomiting.
Certain life-changing side effects can also happen with some prostate cancer treatments. These include:
- Trouble controlling urination . It may take time for some people to regain control of their bladder after surgery. Over time, with healing, incontinence often happens less. But some people may have long-term problems. Radiation can also cause incontinence. It may not happen right away, but the risk goes up for years after treatment.
- Erectile dysfunction . This means having trouble getting or keeping an erection. Surgery can damage nerves that control erection. Having nerve-sparing surgery may prevent long-lasting nerve injury. But it may not be a choice in all cases. ED can also happen when the nerves are damaged by radiation. It may not happen right away, but can develop slowly over time after treatment ends. Hormone therapy causes hormone changes that can lower libido and cause ED. Treatments can help with ED.
Talk with your healthcare provider about side effects linked with your treatment. There are often ways to manage them. There may be things you can do and medicines you can take to help prevent or control many treatment side effects.

How Is Prostate Cancer Diagnosed
If your healthcare provider thinks you might have prostate cancer, certain exams and tests will be needed to be sure. Your healthcare provider will ask you about your health history, your symptoms, risk factors, and family history of disease. A physical exam will be done. You will also have a biopsy.
A biopsy is the only way to know for sure that you have cancer. Small pieces of tissue are taken out from your prostate and tested for cancer cells. Your results will come back in about 1 week.
After a diagnosis of prostate cancer, youll need more tests. They’re used to find out the stage of the cancer. The stage is how much cancer there is and how far it has spread in your body. It’s 1 of the most important things to know when deciding how to treat the cancer.
The grade is used as part of staging. It gives you an idea of how fast the cancer will grow and spread.

Loma Linda Proton Treatment Center Announces Multiple Clinical Trials Open To Patients
June 5, 2013 Loma Linda University Medical Center currently has openings in eight clinical trials for patients with certain types of cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, esophagus and pancreas as well as those with soft-tissue sarcoma. All of the trials involve the use of proton therapy and are approved by the Institutional Review Board, the independent national committee that oversees such trials.
The use of proton beam radiation as a cancer treatment was developed and brought to use by scientists at LLUMC more than 20 years ago. Since that time Loma Lindas Proton Treatment and Research Center has cared for more than 15,000 cancer patients, making it the most dynamic proton treatment center in the world.
The ongoing study of proton therapy helps to enhance patient care and furthers the technology as the premiere radiation treatment modality for cancer and other diseases, said Jerry D. Slater, M.D., chairman of the LLUMC Proton Treatment and Research Center. What Is Prostate Cancer
Cancer starts when cells change and grow out of control. The changed cells often grow to form a lump or mass called a tumor. Cancer cells can also grow into nearby areas. They can spread to other parts of the body, too. This is called metastasis.

New Prostate Treatment Added To Protect Side Effects Of Radiation Treatment
The Loma Linda University urology department in partnership with Loma Linda University Health radiation oncology has added the use of Space OAR hydrogel on localized prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, in an effort to protect quality of life and minimize side effects.
For the 1 in 9 men who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, 91 percent of those are most likely to be localized meaning it has not spread to other organs. The most common treatment for this type of prostate cancer is some form of radiation therapy. Unfortunately, that type of treatment can have side effects that effect the rectum and bowel function because of their close proximity to the prostate.
To combat this, urologists at Loma Linda Univeristy Health now inject a gel between the prostate and the rectum to create a space between the two. This allows the patient to receive whatever dose of radiation treatment needed to their prostate, without harm to neighboring organs and body parts.
Urology specialist Herbert C. Ruckle, MD, chair of Loma Linda University Healths Urology Department, says he is grateful that this new preventative treatment is now in place to enhance his patients quality of life.
Ruckle says the procedure adds peace of mind for physicians.The patient can receive the optimal dose of radiation to treat the prostate cancer and not be limited by concern of radiation toxicity to the rectal wall.

Psma Imaging Therapy Open New Doors For Prostate Cancer Patients At Llu Cancer Center
Loma Linda University Cancer Center is newly offering PSMA therapy, a targeted therapy that delivers radiation directly to the cancer cells of patients with metastatic prostate cancer. The therapy is paired with PSMA PET scanning, an imaging technique designed to locate prostate cancer cells using high precision technology.
We are excited for the opportunity to offer this brand-new imaging technique and therapy, which are forging new avenues for care that werent available to prostate cancer patients previously, says Eric Peters, MD, a radiologist at LLU Cancer Center.
PSMA PET scans and therapy focus on locating prostate-specific membrane antigen , a protein found at high levels on the surface of prostate cancer cells. Peters says prostate cancer patients may benefit from PSMA PET imaging alone or combined with the therapy, which is typically performed after imaging.
Patients with a diagnosis of prostate cancer may undergo PSMA PET to establish the initial staging of their cancer or to locate suspected recurrence of cancer, Peters says. An FDA-approved imaging technique as of last year, PSMA PET uses a radioactive tracer to identify and attach to PSMA proteins that show up on the imaging.
