Green Light Laser Therapy, What are the Benefits – Dr Evan Fynes

We offer treatment for prostate problems, including slow urine stream, frequent urination at night, difficulty emptying the bladder, and other problems to patients within driving distance to our offices as well as from other states and countries. Our patients come from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and over 70 countries worldwide.

Who Can Have This Treatment

All patients with an enlarged prostate, known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia are suitable, including those on anticoagulants. Because we use powerful, third generation laser technology and proven techniques, we can treat men with large prostates, including those who have gone into retention and are dependent upon a catheter.

How Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy Works

GreenLight laser prostatectomy is a procedure in which the excess prostate tissue is removed to relieve constriction of the urethra, allowing easy passage of urine.

The laser is used to vaporize excess prostate tissue that is limiting the flow of urine. Most patients can expect very rapid relief of their BPH symptoms, often within 24 hours of GreenLight Laser prostatectomy.

For most men, GreenLight laser prostatectomy is an outpatient procedure, allowing them to return home the same day.

Urinary Incontinence After Green Light Laser

Some men may develop urinary incontinence after treatment with Greenlight laser for enlarged prostate. Most often this is caused by persistently high voiding pressure caused by overactive bladder and is treatable with medications used for overactive bladder. Sometimes, less commonly , this may be caused by the loss of sphincteric muscle used in controlling urination.

Did you know?Dr. Shteynshlyuger has performed over 1,000 surgeries and procedures for enlarged prostate, including Rezum, Urolift, prostate enucleation, laser ablation of the prostate, and TURP. He performs over 100 prostate procedures a year.

Bph Causes Urinary Problems Such As:

Green Light Prostate Surgery Side Effects

A weak urine stream Difficulty getting a urine stream started and completely stopped Frequently feeling like you need to urinate Feeling that you have not completely emptied your bladder after you urinate.

How is BPH diagnosed? BPH is diagnosed by a urologist who will evaluate your symptoms and do a series of tests including a digital rectal exam, a prostate-specific antigen blood test, and a urine test. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the type of treatment you receive depends on the severity of the condition. The most optimal treatment option depends on the size of the prostate, age, overall health, and the severity of the symptoms.

Two of the most common and effective treatment options available for BPH include a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate and Greenlight Laser PVP. A TURP is an invasive surgical procedure that removes excess growth around the prostate gland. It is performed by a urologist in a hospital under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia coupled with a sedative.

A resectoscope or a spring-action cutting tool, is inserted into the urethra to access the enlarged prostate gland. The electricity generated through the cutting tool removes small pieces of tissue until the urethra is no longer restricted.

Day Post Greenlight Laser Prostate Surgery Pain With Urination

It is the eight day post laser turp surgery for me. I felt like posting after reading ironwolfs post above. His post left me with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. His description of his post surgery experiences are very similar to mine.

My surgery was on Thursday morning. Just prior to surgery I mentioned having a pain in my chest, they immediately did a EKG and it was fine. I awoke from surgery to a painful burning feeling like I needed to pee very bad. A little while later the pain in my chest returned and they did another EKG. Again it was ok , Im 53 in good shape with no history of heart problems.

All this time they have big bags of saline flushing out my bladder , the outflow looked like watermelon juice. The plan was to go home that afternoon, but since I mentioned the gas, they decided to keep me overnight. This may have been a good thing because I was flushed until discharged at 3:00PM the next day. My outflow looked normal by then.

Did I mention catheters are a major pain? Not only do they make you feel like you need to pee all the time, but if you get morning wood like I do, well let me just advise you to keep some ice water and a rag close by.

The flow was slowly getting better but still with the painful burning sensation and continued like that until this morning. This has been the best morning so far. Pretty good flow and the burning is almost gone! YEAH!!!

As Men Age They Often Develop An Enlarged Prostate

When the prostate becomes enlarged, it is known as a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the urethra, which is responsible for carrying urine from the bladder out of the body. As the prostate gets bigger, or enlarges, it can block the urethra which often leads to problems with urination. The added pressure on the urethra as a result of an enlarged prostate can make it more difficult to urinate.

Will I Need To Wear A Catheter

Many patients do not require a catheter following the procedure. If one is required, it is typically removed in less than 24 hours. However, patients with compromised bladder function or those who require prolonged catheterization as a result of severe urinary symptoms may require a catheter for a longer period of time.

What Is The Recovery Time

After the GreenLight procedure, you will want to take it easy for the rest of the day. Some mild side effects can include nausea or constipation, so patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids and try to stick to soups and liquid meals for a day or two if either of these issues is present.

You will have a catheter in for several days, which will require some care. Additional common side effects include some light blood in the urine or pink-tinged urine as well as frequent urination and a burning sensation during urination. These issues should resolve themselves within a few days to weeks.

We recommend that patients wait to resume normal physical activity for 1 week after GreenLight Laser Therapy, and then to start slowly, with walks instead of runs, for instance. We do not recommend any heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. We also strongly recommend patients do not have sexual intercourse for at least 1 to 2 weeks post-procedure.

Within 4 to 6 weeks, the inflammation from the prostates healing process should subside and side effects should be gone.

Signs of BPH are:

  • urgent or frequent need to urinate during the day and at night
  • a slow or weak urinary stream
  • difficulty completely emptying the bladder
  • difficulty or delay in starting urination
  • a urinary stream that starts and stops

When medical management of BPH symptoms is ineffective or the side effects of medications cannot be tolerated, men may choose a surgical procedure to correct the problem.

Bph Is A Growth Of The Cells Within The Prostate Gland But It Is Not Cancer

It is also not a sign of cancer and does not lead to cancer. However, it is possible to have BPH and prostate cancer at the same time. By age 60, more than half of men have BPH. By age 85, about 90 percent of men have BPH, but only about 30 percent will have symptoms. It is unclear as to what the cause of BPH is exactly. It is believed that the condition is a normal part of the aging process and is likely caused by changes in hormone balance and in cell growth. Other risk factors that increase a mans risk for BPH include a family history of the condition, having diabetes and heart disease, obesity, physical inactivity, and being Caucasian or African-American.

How Does This Compare To A Standard Turp Operation

For decades, the gold standard for treating BPH has been a transurethral resection of the prostate operation. During a TURP, an electrical cutting loop is passed down a cystoscope to chip away the obstructive prostate from the inside to create an open channel. The green light laser technology has been improved over the years such that it may now be considered the new gold standard treatment because it combines the excellent long term results that one gets with traditional TURP, with some other advantages.

The Initial Causes Green Light Prostate Surgery

One of the first symptoms of prostate issues is pain or tenderness in the groin or lower back. This can be the result of a noncancerous condition called enlarged prostatic tissue, or it could be an infection of the bladder. In either case, its important to see a doctor as soon as possible. If youre suffering from prostate pain, you may want to consider reducing your caffeine intake.

Another symptom of a potentially enlarged prostate is difficulty starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. These symptoms are not serious, but theyre still alarming. Most men put up with an enlarged prostate for years before seeking medical attention, but they typically seek treatment as soon as they notice symptoms. Even if you dont have symptoms, its worth getting checked to determine if you have any prostate issues.

If you experience nightly bathroom runs, you may be experiencing an enlarged prostate. You may be having difficulty starting a stream of urine, or you may even be dribbling or leaking during the day. These problems arent life-threatening, but can become a nuisance. You should not ignore these signs and seek treatment as soon as you notice them. If you feel any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor.

An Amazing Treatment Carried Out Quickly And Efficiently

Patient testimonial – Greenlight laser for prostate & kidney/bladder stones

Condition: BPH Treatment: Rezum Name: Mr W, Devon

For many years, since the early 1990s I had terrible urgency problems whereby the desire to urinate suddenly happened and I just had to find anywhere suitable to go, being as discrete as I could if in a busy place.

More recently since 2010 I have been getting up 2 5 times each night, and never really felt that I was able to empty my bladder. I was recommended to have a TURP but fortunately I read about the REZUM treatment offered at North Hampshire Hospital and was pleased to be offered the procedure.Since then, I am only getting up once a night now, and sometimes going right through and the feelings of urgency have gone completely. I am able to stop taking Finasteride as well.

So overall, an amazing treatment done quickly and efficiently and my thanks to Richard Hindley and his amazing team.

My Greenlight Laser Surgery: I Almost Look Forward To Going To The Toilet Now Sixty

Green Light Surgery For Prostate

Looking back, I never had would be considered a good flow. During the time it took for me to pass urine, three other blokes would come and go. It got to a point where I felt increasingly self-conscious about it and it put me off going out.

My Dad had the same problem. He ended up having the traditional operation, the TURP and was told after surgery that the main problem was that his bladder neck was much smaller than normal. I remember thinking at the time, I wonder if I have the same thing.

It is one of those problems that you do tend to put up with because it isnt life-threatening and you get used to it. For me, it was a conversation with a customer that made the difference. He had been for GreenLight laser surgery with Mr Alan Doherty and said it was the best money he had ever spent and that the procedure itself was a breeze.

I went to see my GP and explained I was considering the procedure. The GP said he thought my prostate was slightly enlarged and referred me to Mr Doherty. I was convinced by the GreenLight laser approach: medication didnt appeal to me at all and from conversations Ive had with other men, didnt seem to be very effective.

Equally, from the experience of men I know who have had the TURP, that seemed a very tough operation with a long period of recovery. Even after surgery, some of them had problems like incontinence, so I didnt want to have the TURP.

Our Greenlight Laser Services

Our GreenLight laser services offer a safe and effective way to reduce and relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Symptoms may include:

  • difficulty or straining when urinating
  • a reduced urine stream
  • a change in the frequency of urination
  • pain or burning during urination
  • a feeling that the bladder never completely empties.

GreenLight laser therapy works by using laser to melt away excess tissue from the prostate.

Your urologist will insert a small tube into the urethra. They will then guide the laser through this tube to vaporise the obstructing prostate tissue. This provides a larger channel through which urine can pass and helps your bladder function normally again.

Our urologists, urological surgeons, registered nurses and allied health professionals work together to diagnose your condition and decide if GreenLight laser therapy is suitable for you.
