Can Any Foods Help With My Prostate Cancer

Shrink ENLARGED PROSTATE in 7 Easy Steps (2022 Update)

You may have heard that certain foods might help slow down the growth of prostate cancer or lower the chance of it coming back after treatment, including:

  • soya beans and other pulses
  • green tea
  • cruciferous vegetables
  • pomegranate.

With all of these foods, there is some evidence to suggest they might be helpful for men with prostate cancer, but other studies havent shown any effect. This means we cant say for sure whether any of these foods can help. Until theres more evidence that any individual food has an effect on prostate cancer, its best to have a balanced diet that contains all of the food groups.

Traditional Treatments For Bph

Until recently, treatments for BPH were limited to medications such as alpha blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors or surgical procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate . In TURP, a surgical instrument is inserted into the tip of the penis and then used to trim and remove excess prostate tissue.

There are pros and cons to both treatment approaches.

Medications can help relieve symptoms and reduce the size of the prostate. However, the medications can have unpleasant side effects, including chronic stuffy nose, lightheadedness and loss of libido.

In comparison, TURP surgery is better at improving symptoms more quickly. But in some cases, a prostate is too large to be removed through a TURP procedure. TURP also carries a risk of causing new problems such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction or retrograde ejaculation .

Is Red Wine Good For Prostate

A new study shows men who drink four or more glasses of red wine per week have a nearly 50% lower risk of prostate cancer than non-drinkers. In addition, researchers found that red wines protective effects appear to be even stronger against the most dangerous and aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

Inclusion And Exclusion Criteria

The criteria for inclusion were: casecontrol and cohort studies evaluating the relationship between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer original articles published in English up till December 2014 articles that reported findings in odds ratio, hazard ratio, incidence ratio or standardized mortality ratio and articles reporting at least three levels of alcohol consumption with drinking amounts, including the reference level. Articles with no abstainer group or a lowest drinking level greater than 0.33g/d were excluded. Additionally, studies reporting total alcohol consumption were included while studies based on consumption of specific beverages only such as wine, whiskey, vodka, sake or hard liquors were excluded. When the results of the study were published more than once or if the same dataset was used multiple times, only the most recent or more complete data were included in analyses. The primary outcomes of interest were mortality and/or morbidity from prostate cancer .

While published and peer reviewed cohort or casecontrol studies were included in the review, all other article types including narrative reviews, letters, editorials, commentaries, unpublished manuscripts, dissertations, government reports, books and book chapters, conference proceedings, meeting abstracts, lectures and address, and consensus development statement including guideline statements, were excluded.

When To Seek Medical Care

Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

A person may have urinary symptoms unrelated to prostatitis that are caused by bladder problems, UTIs, or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Symptoms of prostatitis also can signal more serious conditions, including prostate cancer.

Men with symptoms of prostatitis should see a health care provider.

Men with the following symptoms should seek immediate medical care:

  • complete inability to urinate

Fasting To Shrink An Enlarged Prostate

Is fasting a solution to shrink an enlarged prostate?

It may be, as long as you include in your diet prostate-friendly foods, like those mentioned above. Just fasting, without consciously choosing foods that shrink the prostate wont help you that much. That is why keep in mind the foods that are good for prostate health when you go grocery shopping.

What makes fasting a good way to shrink an enlarged prostate is that it involves the exclusive consumption of vegetables, excluding meat and dairy from the menu. And these foods are known for their inflammatory properties. Also, when fasting it is recommended to drink more liquids and stay hydrated. Especially drinking green tea helps soothe the prostate gland.

The enlargement of the prostate cant be cured naturally, but there are changes in lifestyle and diet that can be made in order to prevent this painful condition. Practicing an active lifestyle with physical activities, drinking plenty of liquids, having a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol consumption are natural ways of preventing prostate enlargement, among other illnesses.

It is also important to see a urologist who can recommend the best treatment in your case. Sometimes, even a surgical procedure may be recommended to relieve the symptoms. UroLift is the most advanced non-invasive BPH treatment available. Talk with Dr. Samadi about this method of prostate enlargement treatment!

What Vitamins Or Supplements Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

There are some supplements that may help prevent prostate cancer, such as:

  • Fatty acids, also known as omega-3s, which can help reduce your risk of prostate cancer. They are found in fish like sardines, tuna, mackerel, trout and salmon. However, the research on this is not conclusive. A study in 2013 suggested that increased fatty acids may lead to prostate cancer.
  • Cranberry extract, which includes a flavonol that may inhibit prostate cell growth and decrease the PSA level.

What If I Can’t Have Surgery

Surgery isnt always an option you may not be fit or well enough for an operation, or you may not like the idea of it. If surgery isnt suitable for you and lifestyle changes and medicines havent worked, your doctor or nurse may suggest using a catheter. This is a thin, flexible tube used to drain urine from your bladder. The catheter may be permanent or temporary.

A permanent catheter is passed up into the bladder through your penis, or through a small cut in your abdomen. The catheter is usually attached to a drainage bag, which you strap on to your body under your clothing. Your doctor or nurse will usually change your catheter every 12 weeks.

A temporary catheter is where you put a catheter in yourself when you need to urinate, rather than leaving one in all the time. Your doctor or nurse will show you how to put the catheter in and tell you how often to use it. Some men can urinate quite well without a catheter and only use it once a day to make sure they empty their bladder regularly. Other men need to use a temporary catheter several times a day.

You can lower your chances of getting a urine infection by keeping your catheter and the area around it clean. You may find the following tips helpful.

Let your nurse know if your catheter isnt draining properly. If urine hasnt drained from your bladder for 2 to 3 hours, contact your GP or district nurse straight away.

Prostate Cancer Risk Factors

New Treatment for Enlarged Prostate Restores Normal Urination

Some factors which may increase your risk for prostate cancer include:

  • A raised risk after the age of 50
  • A family history of prostate cancer
  • Obesity
  • Race particularly as studies have shown that men of African ancestry are most at risk

Contrary to an idea that some folks have, frequent sex does not pose any risks that can cause prostate cancer.

We can read the following in the webpage of the National Cancer Institute: Numerous studies have examined whether there is an association between alcohol consumption and the risk of other cancers.

Evidence is accumulating that alcohol is associated with increased risks of melanoma and of prostate and pancreatic cancers.

Medical authorities have countered opinions about the scientific data published so far. There is evidence that alcohol can increase the risk of prostate cancer, but it is sometimes inconsistent.

Men who are heavy drinkers and have a prostate cancer diagnosis may experience aggravated symptoms caused by alcohol intake.

Do you need more help?

Alcohol is a known carcinogen and heavy consumption is linked to a range of cancers, including breast, throat and mouth, and liver cancers. To date the jury has been out on whether heavy drinking increases the risk of prostate cancer with mixed evidence across different studies.

Symptoms Of Urinary Problems

Urinary symptoms commonly experienced with prostate problems include:

  • the need to urinate frequently during the night
  • urinating more often during the day
  • urinary urgency the urge to urinate can be so strong and sudden that you may not reach the toilet in time
  • the urine stream is slow to start
  • urine dribbling for some time after finishing urination
  • a sensation that the bladder isn’t fully emptied after urination
  • lack of force to the urine flow, which makes directing the stream difficult
  • the sensation of needing to go again soon after urinating.

Although these symptoms often do not need treatment, see your doctor if they are causing you difficulty, as they can be successfully treated.

The Use Of Baking Soda In Oncology

Even though most oncologists do not recommend sodium bicarbonate for their patients, they actually use it for the same purposes in chemotherapy. By combining this alkalinizing agent with chemotherapy drugs, it protects the organs of the body from being destroyed by the poisonous effects of those drugs.

Essentially, sodium bicarbonate raises the pH around these vital organs and prevent cancer from spreading there and chemotherapy drugs from causing even greater destruction.

Dr. Mark Sircus, the Director of the International Medical Veritas Association, detailed the link between cancer and pH as well as the use of baking soda as an anticancer agent in his book, Sodium Bicarbonate Rich Mans Poor Mans Cancer Treatment.

Dr. Tullio Simoncini, an Italian oncologist, regularly treats his cancer patients with baking soda. In his experience, oral, intravenous and aerosol delivery of sodium bicarbonate is effective in the treatment of breast and prostate cancers as well as other types of cancer except for brain cancer.

Although Dr. Simoncini believes oral sodium bicarbonate is most appropriate for cancers affecting the digestive tract, other oncologists and cancer patients such as Vernon have proven that oral sodium bicarbonate can indeed effectively treat cancer affecting deep-seated organs.

Dr. Simoncini, on the other hand, gives glucose intravenously along with sodium bicarbonate for the same purpose.

What Drink Should You Avoid For Prostate Health

An alcoholic drink should ideally be avoided when a man has problems with their prostate. Another important option to consider is caffeinated drinks. This includes coffee. The problem here is that alcohol and caffeine can irritate the bladder. This can lead to unpleasant effects.

A man may find that they need to urinate more frequently. The bladder irritation can also lead to complications. Such complications may also include a risk of inflammation within the bladder. This can further contribute to the urinary symptoms the man experience.

It is important to note that some teas also contain caffeine. The person should always check the label of a product they buy. This ensures they can avoid caffeine in their drinks. In turn, there is a reduced risk of irritating the bladder.

Benign Enlarged Prostate: Prostate Problems: What Can I Do Myself

5 helpful drinks for an enlarged prostate

Many men know what it’s like to feel the urge to urinate often and have to make regular trips to the toilet at night. These problems are usually caused by a benign enlarged prostate. If the problems caused by the prostate are only minor, it is often possible to manage them by simply changing a few everyday habits.

The gradual growth of the prostate gland is a normal part of aging in men. At some point it may cause urination problems, though. Men who have only mild symptoms can often cope quite well without treatment. There are a few strategies that can help in everyday life:

It is also a good idea to review the medications you are taking with a doctor or pharmacist. Some medications can increase the production of urine or affect the bladder muscles, making the symptoms worse. These medications include:

  • Diuretics: medications that make the body release more urine, also used to treat things like high blood pressure.
  • Antispasmodic medications.
  • Certain medications for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and .

Your doctor can advise you on possible alternatives that don’t make the prostate problems worse.

Low Carb + High Fat = Less Prostate Cancer

The high rate of prostate cancercancer in North America is linked to the high fat content of the typical American and Canadian man’s diet.

Critics have blamed low-carb, weight lossweight loss diets for encouraging consumption of foods with high-fat content. Are these diets really so bad? No — at least when it comes to prostate cancer, suggest Vasundara Venkateswaran, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Venkateswaran’s team grafted human prostate cancers onto mice. They then fed some of the mice a low-carb/high-fat diet. Other mice got a high-carb/high-fat diet.

The animals on the low-carb diet lost weight. And despite the high-fat content of their meals, the animals’ prostate tumors grew slower than those in the animals on a high-carb diet. It appears that the low-carb diet lowered the animal’s insulin levels, thereby slowing tumor growth.

“A low-carb/high-fat diet, in addition to helping people lose weight, may play a role in decreasing the risk of prostate cancer,” Venkateswaran said, at a news conference. “Now clinical trials have to be done.”

Prostate Symptoms Better With Alcohol

Foods to Avoid with Enlarged Prostate | Reduce Symptoms and Risk of Prostate Cancer

Its one of those things that people including urologists nearly all believe. Men with an enlarged prostate, they say, shouldnt drink alcoholic beverages. Its supposed to make the symptoms of an enlarged prostate urinary flow, urinary irritation, and poor sexual function worse.

There isnt much scientific evidence for this, says Claus Georg Roehrborn, MD, of the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center at Dallas. So Roehrborn and colleagues analyzed data from 19,000 men enrolled in six different international clinical trials of treatments for enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

Some of these over-45-year-old men said they didnt drink at all. Others said they had no more than two, three to six, or more than six drinks a week.

The patients who claim they drank more complained of less irritative and obstructive symptoms, Roehrborn said at a news conference. The more alcohol people said they were consuming, the better their urine flow, and the better their libido.

Does this mean a man with an enlarged prostate should take up drinking? No, Roehrborn says. But he argues that doctors should stop telling men their prostate symptoms will get better if they stop drinking.

The finding may put an end to this common knowledge advice, says Mark Moyad, MD, MPH, of the University of Michigan, who moderated the news conference at which Roehrborn spoke.

Tips For Relieving Bph Symptoms

Four simple steps can help relieve some of the symptoms of BPH:

  • Some men who are nervous and tense urinate more frequently. Reduce stress by exercising regularly and practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation.
  • When you go to the bathroom, take the time to empty your bladder completely. This will reduce the need for subsequent trips to the toilet.
  • Talk with your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you’re taking some may contribute to the problem. Your doctor may be able to adjust dosages or change your schedule for taking these drugs, or he or she may prescribe different medications that cause fewer urinary problems.
  • Avoid drinking fluids in the evening, particularly caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Both can affect the muscle tone of the bladder and stimulate the kidneys to produce urine, leading to nighttime urination.
  • For more on advances in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases, read the Annual Report on Prostate Diseases from Harvard Medical School.

A New Treatment Option For Bph

A newer, nonsurgical treatment for BPH, called prostatic artery embolization , is available at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, says Ari Isaacson, MD, a vascular interventional radiologist who performs the procedure.

PAE is performed through a small puncture in the groin or the arm. A catheter is inserted through the artery and directed toward the prostate.

Once the catheter is positioned in the artery supplying blood to the prostate, tiny particles called microspheres are injected that plug up the artery, blocking blood flow. This is called embolization.

This process is then repeated on the other side, usually through the same original puncture, Dr. Isaacson says.

How Can You Keep Your Prostate Healthy

There are effective treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The problem is these treatments often cause side-effects. Dizziness and retrograde ejaculation are two possible side-effects. There are other problematic side-effects too.

A man may find that these side-effects are unpleasant. While all men are at risk, older men are more likely to develop an enlarged prostate. Men are looking for ways to reduce their symptoms without the side-effects of drugs used for BPH.

For some men, simply keeping their prostate healthy and disease-free is also important. Lets take a closer look at some of the most effective ways in which men can maintain a healthier prostate that functions well, stays small and does not cause any significant problems that could affect their everyday lives.
