Rezum Therapy For Enlarged Prostate

Rezm Bph Treatment In Jacksonville Fl

Rezum Treatment for Enlarged Prostate with Dr. Richard Levin

Dr. Douglas Swartz is recognized as a Rezm Center of Excellence

Rezm is the latest minimally-invasive technology that uses thermal energy in water vapor for treatment of an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia . It utilizes steam to treat the extra prostate tissue that is causing symptoms such as frequency, urgency, irregular flow, weak stream, straining and getting up at night to urinate. The procedure is performed in clinic while you are awake.

The McIver Clinic is one of Floridas leaders in Rezm BPH treatment. Our board-certified urologists have had extensive training using Rezm to help men get relief from symptoms of BPH. If you are experiencing symptoms such as frequent urination, weak or slow urinary stream, difficulty starting urination or the inability to urinate, schedule your consultation with The McCiver Clinic at our office in Jacksonville, FL.

What Can I Expect After My Procedure

Given your prostate tissue will become swollen immediately after the procedure, you will need the catheter to stay for at least 3-14 days. You will then come to the clinic to have your catheter removed. Immediately after the catheter is removed, you might feel that your symptoms are worse than prior to your procedure. However, you will start noticing a gradual improvement of your symptoms after 2-3 weeks. This improvement will continue to progress up until 3 months after the procedure, when you will notice the maximal effect of the water vapor therapy. At that time, you will follow up with The McIver Clinic for a final evaluation.

Benefits Of The Rezum Therapy System

Preservation of sexual function Significant improvement in BPH symptoms A rapid return to normal daily activities Fewer adverse events A good alternative to offer patients with an improved quality of life Can be carried out under sedation without the need of a general anaesthetic A day case procedure

The REZUM Therapy System offers an alternative to standard BPH management and has been supported by The National Institute of Clinical Excellence .

How Is Rezm Performed

The board-certified urologists at the McIver Clinic perform the Rezm therapy in the office setting. The doctor performs a cystoscopy to evaluate the inside of the urinary channel. With a hand-held device, Rezm applies radio-frequency energy to a few drops of water to create vapor . That water vapor is then injected into the prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. The steam releases the energy into the cell membranes and will gently and immediately damage those cells by causing cell death. Over time, your body will absorb the treated prostate tissue and the urinary channel will re-open, relieving you of your urinary symptoms.

What Is Your Patient Selection Process Like For Treating Bph

Salisbury Urology

Palese: One of the most important things about this procedure is setting up patient expectations. When patients come to see us, we want to provide the information that they require to make an informed decision and informed consent about what they’re doing, and that their expectations are in line with what they’re seeking. For the Rezum, one of the reasons that a lot of men will seek it out is because it tends to have minimal sexual side effects compared to many of the other procedures available. A lot of my younger patients will request to do a Rezum procedure, knowing that they’ll probably need some type of retreatment or some other type of treatment in the future, anywhere from 3 to 5 years. We keep that in mind when we’re recommending treatments, like Rezum. We want to make sure that patients understand what they’re signing up for, what their expectations are and what they hope they can achieve by doing this procedure.

What Are The Risks Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Surgery

Surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia is common and generally very safe. However, there are risks with any surgery. After the procedure you might have the following issues:

  • Frequent urination or difficulty urinating, painful urination.
  • An inability to hold urine .
  • Infection or symptoms resembling a urinary tract infection.
  • Sexual dysfunction.

In general, side effects from vapor ablation are milder than with other forms of surgery to correct BPH.

What To Expect During Rezum

On the day of the procedure, a light meal and lots of fluids are recommended.

The procedure itself is quick and simple, taking only a single one- to two-hour office visit. Depending on the size of the prostate, the procedure consists of two to seven injections, each nine seconds long.

Upon arriving, the patient will be instructed to eliminate urine, and the bladder is then checked. If there is still more urine in the bladder, its drained to avoid having to drain it during the procedure.

Because of the initial swelling, a catheter is then inserted, which will remain for two to five days. The catheter is hooked to a bag that stays on the leg and is covered by pants. A driver is required to take the patient home.

What Exactly Is Rezum

The prostate is walnut-sized and located under the bladder, extending around the urethra, where urine travels out of the body.

BPH doesnt usually occur during the first growth spurt.

A growing prostate can press down on the urethra which makes urinating and completely emptying the bladder difficult.

If some urine is left in the bladder and the urethra has narrowed, BPH issues can be the result. This condition is not cancerous or cancer-causing.

Rezum concerns injecting a small amount of water vapor in the prostate.

This causes tissue necrosis in the overgrown part of the prostate, which is basically the death of cells.

The body eliminates the dead tissue naturally, thereby solving prostrate growth in the patient.

The doctor will determine the best location for therapy and insert a tiny tube into the prostate tissue.

Next steam is released for around 9 seconds. The doctor might treat various sites on your prostate depending on its shape and size.

Afterwards, a catheter will be inserted.

How Does Rezm Water Vapor Therapy Work

Rezm Water Vapor Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses the natural energy stored in water vapor, or steam, to remove excess prostate tissue that is pressing on the urethra.

Rezm Therapy is typically performed right in your urologistss office, or at an outpatient surgery facility and completed in one short appointment.

During each 9-second treatment, sterile water vapor is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue. When the steam contacts the prostate tissue, all the stored energy is released into the tissue. Your doctor will determine the amount of treatments you need, based on the size of your prostate.

Over time, your bodys natural healing response absorbs the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms.

Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, and maximum benefit may occur within three months. *1,2 Patient responses can and do vary.

*Dependent on individual clinical situation and healing response.

    How Does Axonics Therapy Work

Axonics Therapy provides gentle stimulation to the nerves that control the bladder and bowel, which can restore normal control and result in symptom improvement.

To see if Axonics Therapy is right for you, you will undergo a short period of therapy using a temporary system. The evaluation period allows you to experience the level of symptom relief the therapy may provide before you commit to long-term therapy.

If you and your doctor determine that Axonics Therapy is right for you, you will have an outpatient procedure where the miniaturized Axonics implant is placed just beneath the skin in the upper part of your buttock.

    How Does Rezm Work

The Rezm therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH that uses stored thermal energy in water vapour to reduce swelling of the prostate and obstruction of the urethra.

During the procedure, your doctor will insert a hand-held device into the urethra to reach the prostate. Your doctor will then inject small amounts of sterile water vapour into targeted prostate tissue. The water vapour will uniformly and instantaneously attack cells, causing them to die. Over time, your bodys natural healing process will remove the dead cells, causing your prostate to decrease in size and no longer obstruct the urethra.

Steam injections contain approximately 0.42ml of sterile water and last 9 seconds each. The amount of injections needed during a Rezm procedure will vary according to the size of the treated prostate. It is important to note that while the therapy targets prostate cells, it will not damage cells of the urethra. The Rezm system sends a small burst of room temperature saline flush through the device each time the needle is deployed and every 30 seconds during navigation and idle time to keep the urethra and the instrument shaft cool.

Rezum Treatment For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is an enlarged prostate. As men get older, its common for the prostate gland to grow which can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms. A large prostate gland can prevent the proper flow of urine out of the bladder and cause problems with the bladder, urinary tract, and kidney.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a problem for many men worldwide. It typically occurs after the age of 25 and causes the prostate to grow bigger and squeeze down on the urethra (a wall becomes thicker than ever before, and the wall eventually starts to weaken. And over time, the bladder ultimately may lose the ability to empty completely.

Narrowing of the urethra and urinary retention, i.e. when the bladder retains a small amount of urine at all times, are commonly associated with BPH. Additionally, although BPH is benign and not a form of cancer, both BPH and cancer may affect an individual at the same time.duct that transmits urine from the bladder to the bodys exterior). There are several treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia, and Rezum Therapy for BPH is a minimally invasive treatment that uses water vapor therapy to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate and the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

    What To Expect Before Rezum

    San Antonio In

To help assess whether a patient is a good candidate for Rezum, the doctor will use a flow rate bladder scan to see how well the patient is emptying. The patient may also be asked to keep track of the amounts of fluids that he drinks and voids. After this evaluation, the doctor will perform a prostate ultrasound and take a telescopic look at the prostate.

At the pre-procedure visit, the patient receives detailed instructions on pre- and postoperative care. He will also receive an antibiotic prescription that should be started the night before the procedure, as well as an anti-anxiety prescription. Anti-inflammatories are given the day before and after the procedure. An alpha blocker prescription is usually given to improve the flow of urine after the procedure.
