For decades, the gold standard for treating BPH has been a transurethral resection of the prostate operation. During a TURP, an electrical cutting loop is passed down a cystoscope to chip away the obstructive prostate from the inside to create an open channel. The green light laser technology has been improved over the years such that it may now be considered the new gold standard treatment because it combines the excellent long term results that one gets with traditional TURP, with some other advantages.
Urinary Retention After Greenlight Pvp Surgery
Infrequently, men might have persistent urinary retention after Greenlight PVP surgery. In this situation, re-evaluation is necessary. Some men have poorly functioning bladder muscles. Treatment for non-obstructive urinary retention using Interstim sacral neuromodulation may be useful. Some men have persistent obstruction. Re-operation may be necessary if obstruction persists. I had GL surgery four days ago and would appreciate feedback regarding the recovery process from those that have also undergone this procedure. I currently void every 30 to 60 minutes at night and every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. My flow is a stream for a few seconds then dribbles for maybe 30 seconds. Is this pretty typical? After the surgery I was drinking 1 1/2 liters of water per day but I may reduce this because I am not convinced my bladder is emptying fully. What do you think about this? When I void, it really burns at first and often I will get bladder spasms as well. Do you think the pain is radiated pain from where the prostate was vaporized? Do you think I will see improvement with these symptoms on a daily basis or weekly basis over the next month or so?

I had a similar problem. it was caused by blood clots forming in the uretha and thus the inconsistant flow of urine.I went to A& E because i was unable to pass urine at all at one stage. They flushed out the bladder and it was unbelievable how many clots there were. They are unlikely to disove them selves. BVut this is some thing yiu need to check out.

I have had the surgery 2010 and since been having problems with bladder not emptying it sounds like Im going to have it redone again

I Had Laser Prostate surgery on Dec 13 and the first week was pretty rough. Pain, nausea, vomiting and could not pee at all after the catheter was removed the first time Had to get another cath in for a couple of days. Had burning pain for 17 days. The first day i could pee, I went 17 times in 18 hours. I still have frequency, but every day is better now. Almost no pain or burning. I think everyone’s experience is different. They say it will get better in time. Hope this helps. Had no problem getting back night/morning erections. Even got one with the catheter in. That was rather bizarre. That can be a side effect: Impotence.

PVP two years ago. Outpatient. Excellent results. Quite painless, some blood in urine for a few days as expected. No catheters or Foley bags for me for the last two years. Normal urination for TWO years and counting. Considering how many posts are showing depressingly negative results, I hesitate to post one so positive since it might result in more folks having negative post op experience. Depends on the surgeon, I suppose.

What To Expect After Greenlight Laser Treatment
The catheter will generally be left in overnight, but can sometimes be removed 12 hours after the operation. Usually, you will be able to pass urine soon after the catheter is removed, and then go home. Most patients experience a rapid improvement in symptoms and flow in the first 24 hours.
Most patients return home after one night in hospital and can return to normal, non-strenuous activities within days.
You are likely to experience some a mild burning sensation for a week or two when passing urine. You may see small amounts of blood in your urine for a short time, and there may be some frequency and ugency, that will settle over time as the bladder adjusts to the lack of obstruction from the prostate.
What Symptoms Does Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy Surgery Address
This type of surgery helps men with an enlarged prostate that is pressing against the urethra making urination difficult.

Looking back, I never had would be considered a good flow. During the time it took for me to pass urine, three other blokes would come and go. It got to a point where I felt increasingly self-conscious about it and it put me off going out.
My Dad had the same problem. He ended up having the traditional operation, the TURP and was told after surgery that the main problem was that his bladder neck was much smaller than normal. I remember thinking at the time, I wonder if I have the same thing.
It is one of those problems that you do tend to put up with because it isnt life-threatening and you get used to it. For me, it was a conversation with a customer that made the difference.
