Forevery 8 men in the United States, one will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.

The risk of developing prostate cancer increases by age. For every man diagnosed with prostate cancer, 6 out of 10 of them are over the age of 65. Men younger than 40 who develop prostate cancer are relatively uncommon.

Besides age, other risk factors of prostate cancer include:

Treatments such as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound or cryotherapy may cause fewer erection problems. Researchers are still looking into these treatments and their long term side effects. There is still a risk of erection problems with these treatments. For example, to treat your cancer properly, the doctor may not be able to avoid the nerves.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men. There are concerns on whether frequent sex contributes to the development of prostate enlargement in general and especially in the evolvement of prostate cancer.

It produces nourishing materials, especially the sugary fructose, for the wellbeing of sperm cells. It is located just below the bladder where urine is stored, and in front of the rectum the last portion of the large intestine where the feces is stored.

Prostate enlargement: 100 for 100

In anatomical relationship, the prostate surrounds the tube that drains the urine from the urinary bladder, just as the tube is leaving the bladder.

A point of fact is that the prostate gland is destined to enlarge in all men as they get older, albeit at different rates in men of different extractions. Anyhow it goes, it is estimated with corroborative findings on autopsy that all men who lived up to 100 years had enlarged prostate a case of 100 for 100!

The good thing however is that most prostate enlargements are usually of no clinical consequence and are not problematic or symptomatic to the affected men since the prostate growth are mostly non-cancerous and non-strangulating.

What The Research Says

Steps to reduce cancer risk often include a lot of things you shouldnt do. So, it may be welcoming news to learn that something many men find pleasurable may help reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

A 2008 determined that men were more likely to develop prostate cancer if they were very sexually active in their twenties and thirties. The study also found no conclusive evidence that masturbation provide greater risk than intercourse.

Prostate cancer is the second most common kind of cancer men get. Skin cancer is the most common cancer. In the United States, one in seven men will get prostate cancer at some point in their life.

What Causes Prostate Cancer

Scientists are not entirely sure what causes prostate cancer, but they do have a list of factors that may increase your risk of developing it. Most of these risk factors are related to gene mutations. Your genes play an essential role in controlling when our cells grow, divide, and die, and mutations in these genes can cause cancer cells to form.

For example, oncogenes are responsible for helping cells grow and divide. Cancer cells are notorious for growing out of control, which is how tumors form. This can occur due to a mutation to an oncogene that leads to continuous growth and division. However, other genes are also important in this aspect, and they are tumor suppressor genes. These genes are responsible for keeping cell growth from getting out of hand and causing cells to die when it is their time. Mutations in these two types of genes play a role in how cancer cells can continue to grow with no check, causing tumors to develop.

Unfortunately, there are many gene mutations that can be inherited, meaning you have no say over whether or not you have these genes. This is why family history is usually a significant indicator of cancer likelihood. These gene mutations play a role in about 10% of all prostate cancers, so knowing if you have a family history of prostate cancer is important.

Talking Counselling And Sex Therapy

Talking to your partner about your erection difficulties can help. Or it may help to talk to a close friend if you are not in a relationship.

Not talking to those close to you could be one of the main barriers to coping with this side effect. You might then find it easier to consider ways that could help.

Counsellors or therapists can help if youre worrying about anything to do with your sex life and sexuality. You can be referred by your GP to a counsellor or therapist within the NHS. You might need to go on a waiting list to see them.

Talk to your GP to find out what is available in your area. Your local hospital or your local Erectile Dysfunction Clinic might have this service.

The drugs used to treat erection problems include:

As drugs work best in men who have sexual desire, they might not help some men who are having hormone therapy. There is limited evidence to say these drugs work when having hormone therapy. But some specialists believe that they are still worth a try if you would like to give them a go.

Talk to your doctor about the best PDE 5 drug for you and the best way to take it. Tadalafil works for 24 to 36 hours, whereas the other drugs work for up to 4 to 6 hours. Its worth knowing that some men need to take 5 to 6 doses before they start to have an effect. You take a daily dose, or when you need them.

Possible side effects of PDE 5 inhibitors include:

  • temporary problems with vision

Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Though early warning signs of prostate cancer are rare, sometimes men experience symptoms before they are diagnosed. Can An Enlarged Prostate Keep You From Ejaculating

Prostate Cancer: Symptoms and Treatments

Enlarged prostate, or BPH, is one of the most common urological conditions that a man can encounter as he gets older. It can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder and other urinary tract, bladder, or kidney problems. Statistics show that 50% of men over the age of 50 will have BPH, then 60% over 60, and so forth, increasing by 10% with every decade of life. Accordingly, as men get older, they’re also more prone to have sexual dysfunction.

There is no evidence that having BPH leads immediately to erectile dysfunction, yet there are relationships between BPH and erectile dysfunction. In general, these relationships are due to patients with BPH who may have other numerous medical conditions that are also associated with erectile dysfunction like hypertension, lipid abnormalities, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

What Is Prostate Inflammation

Prostate inflammation or prostatitis is a localized inflammatory response in the prostate. It is a common disease that affects between 5% to 10% of men at some time during their lives.

There are different types of prostatitis, including acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome . There is also asymptomatic prostatitis, which is even more common and remains undetected because it doesnt have any symptoms .

Symptomatic prostatitis can cause frequent urination, prostatodynia, , sexual dysfunction, and painful defecation.

Depending on the type, the symptoms can be mild or severe and last a few days or months. They can be recurrent or only happen to you once.

An interesting fact about prostatitis is that it is much more common in young patients than benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and other prostate-related conditions.

The typical prostatitis patient is young and sexually active, which is why prostatic infections are often associated with sexually-transmitted diseases.

An enlarged prostate can also be the cause of other problems. If the enlarged prostate is causing symptoms, the best treatment would be a natural remedy. In the meantime, there are treatments for a wide range of conditions that cause a man to experience pain. A common surgical procedure involves an electric loop, laser, or electro-stimulation. The procedure is a safe and effective option for treating enlarged or symptomatic BPH.

Frequent Sex May Be Protective

Hence, not until very recently, the mainstream hypothesis had been too much sex might provoke the development of prostate cancer but a recently published research study thinks the direct opposite, postulating that frequent sex may be a protective factor in prostate cancer.

The findings, published in the April 7 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association and reviewed on webmd.com, are based on data collected from nearly 30,000 predominately white men aged 46 to 81.

Cancer Treatments And Erectile Dysfunction

Recognizing Prostatitis vs Prostate Cancer | Ask a Prostate Expert, Mark Scholz, MD

Following surgery, many men experience erectile dysfunction , but for many, the disruption is temporary. Nerves damaged during surgery may result in erectile dysfunction. A nerve-sparing prostatectomy may reduce the chances of nerve damage. Another factor is the surgeons skill level for performing the nerve-sparing technique, which if done correctly, may improve patients likelihood of retaining erectile function, says Dr. Shelfo.

Prostate cancer may also be treated with various types of radiation therapybrachytherapy, external beam radiation or stereotactic body radiation therapy. Each type of therapy causes somewhat different side effects. About half of all prostate cancer patients who undergo any of these types of radiation therapy are likely to develop erectile dysfunction, according to a 2016 article published in Advances in Radiation Oncology.

Symptomatic treatment of an enlarged prostate usually involves a combination of medication and lifestyle changes. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may be the best option if you suffer from chronic urination. It will help the body adjust to the increased size of the prostate. Also, taking regular urination intervals will help retrain the bladder to function properly. Inactivity also contributes to urine retention, and cold temperatures can increase the urge to urinate.

Invasive treatment of enlarged prostate includes medication that relieves the pressure on the urethra and bladder. However, if the condition is severe, it may require surgical intervention. If treatment is not successful, the enlarged prostate can become a potentially life-threatening disease. As the hormone levels in the body change, the enlarged prostate can lead to various complications, including urinary retention and even cancer. This is why it is critical to see a doctor for further evaluation.

Does Sex Protect Men Against Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer: All You Need To Know

By Lisa Rapaport, Reuters Health

Researchers followed about 32,000 men starting in 1992 when they were in their 20s and continuing through 2010. During this period, almost 4,000 of the men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Men who ejaculated at least 21 times a month in their 20s were 19 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than men who ejaculated no more than seven times a month, the study found. Men who ejaculated more often in their 40s were 22 percent less likely to get a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Prostate cancer accounts for 15 percent of all new cancer diagnoses worldwide, the researchers note in the journal European Urology. Established risk factors like age, race and family history are not modifiable, they add, and there are few lifestyle changes that can be recommended to men to lower risk.

During the study period, there were 192 cases of prostate cancer among men who ejaculated no more than three times a month. There were 1,041 cases with 4 to 7 ejaculations a month, and 1,509 cases with 8 to 12 monthly ejaculations, another 807 cases with 13 to 20 ejaculations a month and 290 cases with at least 21 monthly ejaculations.

One limitation of the study is that it relied on men to accurately recall and report how often they ejaculated, the authors note. The study also included mostly white men, and its possible the results might look different in a more diverse population.
