Where Does The Money Go

With COVID-19s negative impact on mens ability to receive screening and treatment for prostate cancer, there is a new level of urgency to raise awareness and help patients know they dont need to face this disease alone.

By charity streaming in support of ZERO Cancers free assistance programs, you can help patients pay for life-saving medicine, arrange rides to their doctor appointments, get financial assistance to pay the bills, and find support in their local area. The donations you raise become free patient support programs, including the personalized case management through ZERO360, and peer-to-peer support for newly diagnosed patients through the training and connection of our MENtors program.

You will be helping patients emotionally, financially, and physically. Every dollar counts. And ZERO puts every one of them to good use.

Financial Assistance For Advanced Prostate Cancer Patients

There are resources available to help men pay for their medications for treatment and other related expenses. Treatments may include oral drugs, injections, supportive care drugs or other medications and procedures. To help offset the cost of prescription drugs, patient assistance programs have been established. Other resources exist to help people navigate the ever-changing costs associated with cancer care today. Visit our Financial Resources section to learn about resources for support.

You can also contact ZERO360 for help finding financial assistance and other resources.

Prostate Cancer In The Latin Community

ZERO

The Latin community is the largest and fastest growing minority population in the United States, but research on prostate cancer in Latinxs lags behind that of other racial/ethnic groups in the nation. According to the International Journal of Cancer, Latinxs represent less than 1% of samples analyzed to date in genome-wide association studies of cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Latin men, with approximately 13,000 new cases and 1,800 deaths each year in the U.S. Although the incidence rates are lower statistically for Latin men compared to non-Hipanic white or Black men, this could be attributed to the fact that Latin men have lower levels of PSA screening, and are 21% less likely to receive definitive treatment for high-risk localized prostate cancer than non-Latin white men which has been shown to result in worse outcomes.

These disparities can be attributed to sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, as well as marital status, and health insurance or lack thereof, says Shelby Moneer, ZEROs Vice President of Patient Education and Programs.

Other barriers that remain are the cultural norms and stereotypes that often leave Latin men apprehensive when it comes to screening, let alone getting a diagnosis. Training in cultural competency, patient-centered communication, translation services, and materials provided in a variety of languages are more important than ever in the healthcare field to help fill these gaps.

Zeros Policy Priorities Are:

Protecting and growing research funding

  • We urge Congress to increase funding for the PCRP from $110M in the FY2020 DoD appropriations bill. It’s been 24 years since the federal government’s most successful prostate cancer research initiative had $100M in funding. We are pleased that, through the efforts of ZERO Champions and the broader prostate cancer community, Congress is now funding the PCRP at its FY2001 level. We urge Congress to reach new heights in the fight against prostate cancer by increasing that level of funding in the FY2022 appropriations process by $10M.

Advocating for early detection methods, recommendations, access to care, and coverage

Encouraging coordination among federal agencies

Raising education and awareness about prostate cancer issues at the federal, state, and local levels

  • ZEROs origins stem from grassroots advocacy efforts to secure federal funding for prostate cancer research. Each year during our Prostate Cancer Summit, passionate advocates like you descend on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC to continue fighting for policies that will end prostate cancer.
