Dairy alternatives , can also contain these important proteins and vitamins. Try to choose products with added with added calcium and B12.

NEW YORK – The amount of calcium and vitamin D in the diet appears to have little or no impact on the risk of prostate cancer, but the consumption of low-fat or nonfat milk may increase the risk of the malignancy, according to the results of two studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Dietary calcium and dairy products have been thought to increase the risk of prostate cancer by affecting vitamin D metabolism. Data from several prospective studies have supported an association, but many other studies have failed to establish a link.

To explore this topic further, Dr. Song-Yi Park, from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and colleagues, analyzed data from subjects enrolled in the Multiethnic Cohort Study. This study, conducted between 1993 and 2002, included adults between 45 and 75 years old, were primarily from five different ethnic or racial groups, and lived in California or Hawaii.

A total of 82,483 men from the study completed a quantitative food frequency questionnaire and various factors, such as weight, smoking status, and education levels were also noted, Parks group said.

During an average follow-up period of 8 years, 4,404 men developed prostate cancer. There was no evidence that calcium or vitamin D from any source increased the risk of prostate cancer. This held true across all racial and ethnic groups.

How Much Dairy Should I Eat Or Drink

Milk and dairy are good sources of calcium and protein. The NHS Eatwell Guide recommends having some dairy or dairy alternatives as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

The amount of fat , salt and sugar in dairy products can vary. Where possible choose low-sugar and reduced-fat products as they are healthier dairy options.

Examples include:

  • Plain, low-fat yoghurt

What Causes Prostate Cancer

There isnt a specific answer to a question about what causes prostate cancer. Researchers have not yet identified a particular cause. Some factors related to prostate cancer have been discovered, however.

Researchers have found that cells in the patients prostate tend to become abnormal. This is essentially what causes prostate cancer to start developing3. The DNA of these cells become mutated. These DNA mutations cause the cells to grow at a rapid rate.

The cells will also rapidly divide. The mutated cells will also have a longer lifespan than other cells. As normal cells in the prostate die, these mutated cells continue to live. Mainly, this causes the cells to become cancerous. The cancerous cells then lead to the development of a tumor.

It is not known exactly why this happens to some men. There are a few risk factors that have been identified. These risk factors increase the mans likeliness of developing prostate cancer.

There is another factor to be considered. This would be exposed to a substance called Agent Orange.

While exposure has been minimized in modern times, there are still men who have been exposed to Agent Orange a few decades ago. These men are more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer too4.

Which Foods Might Increase My Risk Of Prostate Cancer

We dont know for certain whether any foods increase the risk of prostate cancer. But some foods might increase your risk if you eat a lot of them.

Dairy foods

Eating or drinking lots of dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, might increase your risk of prostate cancer. This could be because they contain calcium. But researchers are also looking into other causes.

Its still important to eat some dairy foods every day to keep your bones healthy. Dairy alternatives with added calcium, such as soya yoghurt and soya milk, also count. Choose lower-fat and lower-sugar options when you can.

Calcium

Having too much calcium in your diet might increase your risk of prostate cancer. But you do need about 700mg a day to keep your bones healthy. You can get this from a balanced diet. For example, a 200ml glass of milk contains between 240-260mg of calcium and a 120g low fat yoghurt contains about 180mg. You can also get calcium from dairy alternatives, fish, bread, and some vegetables.

Red and processed meat

Eating red and processed meat increases your risk of some types of cancer. We don’t know if it increases the risk of prostate cancer. Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb or goat. Processed meat includes sausages, bacon, ham, salami, and other cured or preserved meats. You should try to limit the amount of red and processed meat you eat. Try to cut down to no more than 70g per day.

Soy And Cancer Risk: Our Experts Advice

Theres a lot of conflicting information going around about soy: Is it healthy? Is it dangerous? And if its OK to eat, why do some people say it isnt?

Some of the misunderstandings come from the fact that studies in people and studies in animals may show different results. In some animal studies, rodents that were exposed to high doses of compounds found in soy called isoflavones showed an increased risk of breast cancer. This is thought to be because the isoflavones in soy can act like estrogen in the body, and increased estrogen has been linked to certain types of breast cancer.

But rodents process soy differently from people, and the same results have not been seen in people. Also, doses of isoflavones in the animal studies are much higher than in humans. In fact, in human studies, the estrogen effects of soy seem to either have no effect at all, or to reduce breast cancer risk . This may be because the isoflavones can actually block the more potent natural estrogens in the blood.

According to Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, soy foods are healthy and safe. But she advises against taking soy supplements which contain much higher isoflavone concentrations than food until more research is done.

Soy Intake And Pca Risk

Twenty-four articles evaluated dietary soy and soy isoflavone intake and PCa risk. These articles were further divided into groups that analyzed risk pertaining to total soy , unfermented soy food , fermented soy food , genistein , daidzein , total isoflavones , tofu , miso , soy milk , and natto intakes. Funnel plots used to explore publication bias are shown in .

Articles that reported soy intake as either a combination of multiple soy food items or as a single soy food item were classified as total soy intake. Sixteen articles reported the association between total soy intake and PCa risk. The pooled RR for this association was 0.71 . Neither Beggâs correlation test nor Eggerâs linear regression test for bias were significant. Heterogeneity amongst studies was analyzed using the I2 index to show high variation between studies .

Could It Be Vitamin D

In earlier research, a link between milk and prostate cancer has been attributed to a high calcium intake, possibly changing the production of a particular form of vitamin D within the body.

Vitamin D is an important regulator of cell growth and proliferation, so scientists believed it may lead to prostate cancer cells growing unchecked. But the evidence on this is limited, and the review adds little to this hypothesis.

Perhaps the reviews most surprising omission is mention of the World Cancer Research Fund Continuous Update Project report on prostate cancer. This rigorous global analysis of the scientific literature identified much stronger risk factors that should be considered as possible confounding factors.

For example, the evidence is rated as strong that being overweight or obese, and being tall , are associated with increased risk of prostate cancer. The exact reasons for this are not fully understood but could be especially significant in Australia where 74% of men are overweight or obese.

A new Australian study found a higher body mass index was a risk factor for aggressive prostate cancer.

For dairy products and diets high in calcium, according to the WCRF, the evidence remains limited.
