What Is A Plant

Can Frequent SEX Prevent Prostate CANCER | Ways to prevent prostate Cancer

A plant-based diet revolves around eating foods that come from plants. This includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans.

Some people who follow a plant-based diet abstain completely from eating animal products, like meat, eggs, honey, and dairy. This is known as a vegan diet.

Others choose to do a mostly plant-based diet, still consuming small amounts of animal products. For example, vegetarians may choose to eat eggs and dairy but not meat or seafood. Others elect to incorporate seafood into their diet plant-based diet.

Research suggests that healthy plant-based diets may be associated with some benefits for men with prostate cancer.

A study that included data on more than 47,000 men found that those under the age of 65 who had greater overall plant-based consumption had a significantly lower risk of fatal prostate cancer.

Some research shows plant-based diets may improve disease development risk as well. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, a large U.S. study found that men following a vegan or strictly plant-based diet were 35 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. However, only men who followed a strict vegan diet experienced these improved outcomes.

Plant-based diets with certain foods and beverages that contain compounds that have

Plant-based foods also have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects, which may be helpful in supporting the overall health of people with prostate cancer.

Four Foods That Halve Your Prostate Cancer Risk

A new study from the UKs National Cancer Research Network, combining four foods that slow down cancer cell growth, reports a 64% reduction in PSA levels, the most widely used marker for cancer cell growth.

The study gave 203 men diagnosed with prostate cancer either a pill of four concentrated food extracts or a placebo to investigate their effects in prostate cancer treatment.

What are the four foods?

Pomegranate compounds in this fruit inhibit the formation of carcinogens and also inhibit cancer cells from producing growth hormones. In a number of studies they have been shown to reduce PSA production and levels.

Green tea contains a type of polyphenol called catechins. These accumulate in prostate tissue and selectively kill cancer cells, reducing PSA levels. Studies in Japan show that men who drink the most green tea reduce their risk of prostate cancer by up to 86%.

Turmeric this potent anti-inflammatory herb contains curcumin, which helps to reduce the spread of prostate cancer cells and so increase prostate cancer survival rates. It also stops cancer cells producing PSA.

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain sulphur-rich compounds that are potent anti-cancer agents. Men who eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables have a 40% lower risk of prostate cancer. These foods also lower PSA production in cell studies.

Should I Use Supplements Or Herbal Remedies

Some people like to use dietary supplements or herbal remedies, but theres little evidence theyre helpful for men with prostate cancer. Some may even be harmful.

Dietary supplements

Theres little evidence that supplements are helpful for men with prostate cancer. Some supplements may interfere with your treatment for prostate cancer, so let your doctor or nurse know if youre taking any.

Most people should be able to get all the nutrients they need by eating a balanced diet, without taking supplements. If you do choose to take supplements, dont take more than the recommended daily allowance for each nutrient because large doses could be bad for your health.

Some men may need to take specific supplements. For example,

  • Vitamin D. Between October and March, try to take 10 micrograms of vitamin D supplements every day. This is because during these months, there is not enough sunlight in the UK for your body to produce enough vitamin D.
  • Calcium. If youre on hormone therapy, your doctor might recommend calcium supplements.

Herbal remedies

Some men like to take herbal medicines to help manage their prostate cancer or the side effects of treatment. For example, some men drink sage tea to help with hot flushes. But there is very little evidence that herbal remedies can help to treat prostate cancer or reduce side effects.

What Types Of Treatments Are Used For Prostate Cancer

If youre diagnosed with prostate cancer, your doctor will help to develop a treatment plan thats right for your individual situation. Its possible that a combination of different treatment options may be used.

They may recommend something called expectant management if your cancer doesnt cause symptoms. During this time, they may monitor your cancer using a variety of tests. Treatment will begin when you develop symptoms or when test results find the cancer is growing.

Other potential treatment options can include:

  • Surgery. If you only have cancer in your prostate, your doctor may suggest surgery to remove the tumor or your prostate.
  • Radiation therapy. In radiation therapy, high energy radiation is used to kill cancer cells.
  • Cryotherapy. During cryotherapy, a special probe is used to freeze and kill cells in your prostate, including cancer cells.
  • Hormone therapy. This treatment focuses on blocking hormones that can encourage cancer growth.
  • Chemotherapy.Chemotherapy drugs can kill cancer cells or slow down their growth.
  • Immunotherapy.Immunotherapy harnesses your immune system to help treat prostate cancer. A type of immunotherapy called sipuleucel-T may be used to treat some types of prostate cancer.
  • Targeted therapy. Targeted therapy blocks the activity of certain proteins on or in cancer cells. Drugs called PARP inhibitors may be used to treat some types of prostate cancer.

Reining In Protein Synthesis To Reduce Complexity

Germanos noticed that, after androgen deprivation, prostate tumor cells that cranked up proliferation genes also cranked up genes involved in protein synthesis, also known as RNA translation. This suggested to the scientists that castration-resistant prostate tumor cells could be relying on higher rates of protein synthesis to maintain their diversity.

When the team used a genetically modified mouse model to block protein synthesis, they saw that castration-resistant prostate cancer cells withered and died.

âThis suggests complexity as target,â Hsieh said.

A uniform set of cancer cells will be vulnerable to the same therapy, making them easier to treat.

What Types Of Hormone Therapy Are Used For Prostate Cancer

Hormone therapy for prostate cancer can block the production or use of androgens . Currently available treatments can do so in several ways:

  • reducing androgen production by the testicles
  • blocking the action of androgens throughout the body
  • block androgen production throughout the body

Androgen production in men. Drawing shows that testosterone production is regulated by luteinizing hormone and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone . The hypothalamus releases LHRH, which stimulates the release of LH from the pituitary gland. LH acts on specific cells in the testes to produce the majority of testosterone in the body. Most of the remaining androgens are produced by the adrenal glands. Androgens are taken up by prostate cells, where they either bind to the androgen receptor directly or are converted to dihydrotestosterone , which has a greater binding affinity for the androgen receptor than testosterone.

Treatments that reduce androgen production by the testicles are the most commonly used hormone therapies for prostate cancer and the first type of hormone therapy that most men with prostate cancer receive. This form of hormone therapy includes:

Treatments that block the action of androgens in the body are typically used when ADT stops working. Such treatments include:

Increase Your Vitamin D

Most people dont get enough vitamin D. It can help protect against prostate cancer and many other conditions. Vitamin D-rich foods include cod liver oil, wild salmon and dried shitake mushrooms. Since the sun is a better, more readily available source of vitamin D, many experts recommend getting 10 minutes of sun exposure every day. Doctors often recommend vitamin D supplements. However, you should talk to your doctor before taking any vitamin or supplement.

What Is Intermittent Adt

Can This Popular Kitchen Spice Reverse Prostate Cancer without Toxic ...

Researchers have investigated whether a technique called intermittent androgen deprivation can delay the development of hormone resistance. With intermittent androgen deprivation, hormone therapy is given in cycles with breaks between drug administrations, rather than continuously. An additional potential benefit of this approach is that the temporary break from the side effects of hormone therapy may improve a mans quality of life.

Randomized clinical trials have shown similar overall survival with continuous ADT or intermittent ADT among men with metastatic or recurrent prostate cancer, with a reduction in some side effects for intermittent ADT .

What Are The Other Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer

In addition to some of the factors weve discussed above, there are several other known risk factors for prostate cancer. These include:

  • Age. Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you get older. According to the ACS, around
  • more common in African American men. More research is needed to determine why.
  • Geographic location. Its unknown exactly why, but prostate cancer is more common in regions of the world like North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Australia.
  • Genetic changes. Some inherited genetic changes, such as those in genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2, may boost your risk of prostate cancer. Additionally, men with an inherited condition called Lynch syndrome are also at a higher risk.

Heres What You Should Know About This Treatment Option

Men who get diagnosed with prostate cancer have several options to choose from for their next step. Many men with slow-growing, low-risk cancer follow active surveillance, a wait-and-see approach that monitors the cancer for changes.

But if the cancer shows higher risk or has already begun to spread, other treatments are recommended. There are two options: surgery to remove the prostate or radiation to destroy the cancer cells.

Studies comparing these two approaches demonstrate no advantage of one over the other with respect to cancer control. Your path will depend on factors like your current health, the specifics of your cancer, and personal preference. Yet for many men, radiation can be the better option.

“Its much more precise than the traditional radiation used for other kinds of cancer, and research also has found that long-term quality of life is often better, with fewer adverse health effects compared to surgery,” says Dr. Anthony DAmico, a radiation oncologist with Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Womens Hospital.

There are two main ways to deliver radiation to the prostate: external beam radiation and brachytherapy.

How Prostate Cancer Causes Diet Problems

Some cancer treatments can lead to long term changes to your diet, affecting how you eat and what you can eat.

Advice about what you should eat is different if you are underweight. For example, you should eat full fat products to add calories to your diet.

Always speak to your doctor, specialist nurse or dietitian if you have problems with diet or weight loss. They can give you advice about how to adapt your diet.

Whether your doctor recommends radiation depends on various factors, including your age, health, and personal preferences. The type of radiation is often dictated by your risk group and whether the cancer is localized or has spread.

Sometimes hormone therapy is given before radiation or along with it. ADT reduces levels of male hormones, called androgens, which can slow or even stop the cancers growth. Studies have found this one-two punch leads to higher survival rates than radiation alone among men with localized prostate cancer and a Gleason score of 7 or higher.

If you opt for surgery, your doctor may suggest radiation afterward, called adjuvant radiation therapy. “You have surgery to remove cancer, and then radiation to eliminate any remaining tumor deposits to keep cancer from returning,” says Dr. Anthony DAmico, a radiation oncologist with Harvards Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Cancer that has grown beyond the prostate also may require post-surgery radiation.

After youve had radiation, youll have a prostate-specific antigen test every three to six months for five years and then annually after that to check for recurrence of the cancer. “If your PSA ever rises above 2, then imaging tests are done, and if needed, additional radiation or other appropriate treatment is given,” says Dr. DAmico.

Low In Red And Processed Meat Saturated Fat And Salt

  • Avoid or reduce processed meats in your diet such as ham, bacon, sausages, salami and pepperoni.
  • Limit the amount of red and processed meat to between 700 to 750 grams raw meat per week, this is the same as 500 grams of cooked meat per week or about 70 grams of cooked meat per day.
  • For example, 2 sausages are about 60 grams of cooked meat.
  • Choose chicken or fish instead.
  • Choose lean meat.
  • Limit saturated fats found in foods such as fatty meat, biscuits, crisps, cheese, cream and butter.
  • Use healthier unsaturated fats like vegetable, olive and sunflower oil and use small amounts.

Tips For Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

  • Maintain a healthy weight. For many men, this means avoiding weight loss by getting enough calories on a daily basis. For men who are overweight and are obese, this may mean losing some weight. If you are trying to lose weight, it should be moderate, meaning only about a pound a week.
  • Get essential nutrients the body needs, such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, such as carotenoids, and water. Not only will your body function better, you will feel better.
  • Be as active as you can, such as taking a daily walk. If you sit or sleep too much, you may lose muscle mass and increase your body fat, even if you are not gaining weight.

If you are struggling to eat enough or are eating too much, nutrition counseling may help you get essential nutrients, such as protein, vitamins, and minerals into your diet and maintain a healthy body weight. Ask your health care team for a referral to a registered dietitian or nutritionist. Dietitians and other members of the health care team work with people to meet their nutritional needs.

How Is Prostate Cancer Treated

Lorenzo asked his doctors about survival and side effects and talked to friends and family members before deciding on treatment. He shares his story in this blog post.

Different types of treatment are available for prostate cancer. You and your doctor will decide which treatment is right for you. Some common treatments are

  • Expectant management. If your doctor thinks your prostate cancer is unlikely to grow quickly, he or she may recommend that you dont treat the cancer right away. Instead, you can choose to wait and see if you get symptoms in one of two ways:
  • Active surveillance. Closely monitoring the prostate cancer by performing prostate specific antigen tests and prostate biopsies regularly, and treating the cancer only if it grows or causes symptoms.
  • Watchful waiting. No tests are done. Your doctor treats any symptoms when they develop. This is usually recommended for men who are expected to live for 10 more years or less.
  • Surgery. A prostatectomy is an operation where doctors remove the prostate. Radical prostatectomy removes the prostate as well as the surrounding tissue.
  • Radiation therapy. Using high-energy rays to kill the cancer. There are two types of radiation therapy
  • External radiation therapy. A machine outside the body directs radiation at the cancer cells.
  • Internal radiation therapy . Radioactive seeds or pellets are surgically placed into or near the cancer to destroy the cancer cells.
