  • Some prostate infections cannot be prevented, but reducing the risk of groin trauma or injury, avoiding sexually transmitted diseases, and staying well hydrated are ways to reduce the chance of getting infectious prostatitis.
  • The prognosis of acute infectious prostatitis is usually good, but chronic infectious prostatitis is only fair because it is difficult to cure.

What About Other Treatments I Hear About

When you have cancer you might hear about other ways to treat the cancer or treat your symptoms. These may not always be standard medical treatments. These treatments may be vitamins, herbs, special diets, and other things. You may wonder about these treatments.

Some of these are known to help, but many have not been tested. Some have been shown not to help. A few have even been found to be harmful. Talk to your doctor about anything youre thinking about using, whether its a vitamin, a diet, or anything else.

Testing For Prostate Cancer Metastasis

4 tips for shrinking an enlarged prostate

After your biopsy, additional tests or imaging may be performed to check for cancer spread, though these are not required in all men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer.

You may need additional tests if you have:

  • High PSA levels
  • Computed tomography scans of your abdomen and pelvis
  • Bone scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging of your pelvis

Many centers, including SCCA, are testing other means of finding cancer spread using new types of positron emission tomography scans. Sometimes lymph nodes around the prostate may be checked for metastasis in order to design treatment appropriately.

At SCCA and University of Washington Medical Center, a long-term effort has identified cells in the bone marrow that originated from prostate cancer, even in the absence of other evidence of spread. With these and other studies being offered to men with advanced prostate cancer, we hope to find ways to identify men at the highest risk of relapse so this knowledge can inform our treatment recommendations.

How Is Acute Prostatitis Diagnosed

Your doctor will likely start by asking questions about your medical history. Theyll also conduct a physical examination.

Theyll probably conduct a digital rectal examination . During this procedure, theyll gently insert a gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum. Your prostate is located in front of your rectum, where your doctor can easily feel it. If you have acute bacterial prostatitis, it will likely be swollen and tender.

During a DRE, your doctor may also massage your prostate to squeeze a small amount of fluid into your urethra. They can collect a sample of this fluid for testing. Laboratory technicians can check it for signs of infection

Your doctor may also feel the lymph nodes in your groin, which may be enlarged and tender.

They may also conduct or order additional tests, such as:

  • a blood culture to rule out bacteria in your blood
  • a urinalysis or a urine culture to test your urine for blood, white cells, or bacteria
  • a urethral swab to test for gonorrhea or chlamydia
  • urodynamic tests to learn if you have problems emptying your bladder
  • a cystoscopy to examine the inside of your urethra and bladder for signs of infection

Recurrent Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Prostate cancer that returns after treatment is considered recurrent. When it returns to the area around the prostate, the disease is classified as a local recurrence. If the cancer is found in another part of the body, the recurrent cancer is considered metastatic. If the cancer metastasizes outside the prostate, it most likely develops in bones first. Metastatic prostate cancer most often spreads to the liver, bones and lungs.

After initial treatment for prostate cancer, PSA levels are expected to drop dramatically. The first sign of recurrent prostate cancer may be a rise in the PSA level. Other symptoms of recurrent cancer may depend on whether and where the cancer has spread. Symptoms include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Jaundice

Patients should discuss any symptoms with their doctor and ask about scheduling regular PSA tests after treatment.

If Youre The Giving Partner

Cleanliness and safety are a must, even for the giver.

Cut and file your nails smooth to help avoid scratching or tearing the delicate skin in and around the anus.

Wash your hands thoroughly, even if youre planning to use a condom over your finger to penetrate your partner. For extra comfort, stuff cotton balls inside the condom or glove.

You can also get the party started in the shower together, which serves as foreplay and gets you both all nice and clean for the big show.

Youll probably need to try a few different moves and experiment with speed and pressure to find what feels best.

Here are some techniques to try, whether youre using fingers or toys.

What Questions Should I Ask My Doctor

You may want to ask your healthcare provider:

  • What type of prostatitis do I have?
  • What is the best treatment for this type of prostatitis?
  • What are the treatment risks and side effects?
  • How can I avoid getting prostatitis again?
  • What type of follow-up care do I need after treatment?
  • Should I look out for signs of complications?

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Prostatitis is a common problem that affects many men. Unfortunately, theres a lot of confusion about the disease. People use the word prostatitis to describe four different conditions. There isnt a one-size-fits-all treatment for prostatitis, which is why an accurate diagnosis is so important.

Tests For Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome

There is no single test to diagnose CPPS. Your doctor will need to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms before they make a diagnosis. This can take some time.

You might be diagnosed with CPPS if youve had some of the symptoms listed above for more than three of the last six months. But your doctor may diagnose CPPS sooner than this.

They will ask you about your symptoms or give you a questionnaire to fill in. Your doctor may also ask about your medical history. This can help them work out what is causing your symptoms, and which treatments are most likely to help.

Youll need to have a urine test to make sure you dont have a urine infection. You may also have a physical examination, including a digital rectal examination , and some other tests, such as a PSA test. Ask your doctor for more information about other tests you may have. For some tests, you might need to visit a doctor at the hospital who specialises in urinary problems or a specialist nurse.

Worried about having a DRE?

Its natural to feel worried or embarrassed about having tests, but some men find the idea of having a DRE upsetting. For example, if youve ever been sexually abused, you might feel very upset about having this test.

Theres no right or wrong way to feel, and its your choice whether or not to have a DRE. If you do decide to have a DRE, explain your situation to your doctor. They can talk you through the test and help to reassure you. It may also help to talk to a counsellor.

What Is A Uti Anyway

Real Question: Symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate?

A UTI, or urinary tract infection, happens when bacteria enters into any part of your urinary system, which includes the urethra, the bladder, the kidneys or the uterus. If not flushed out of the system, the bacteria can lead to an infection, or a UTI.

If youve ever had a UTI , you probably havent forgotten the symptoms. UTIs are very unpleasant, to say the least, and are often accompanied with one or more of the following:

  • A burning sensation when urinating

  • A strong urge to urinate often, usually passing only small amounts of urine at a time.

  • Cloudy and/or strong smelling urine

  • Pelvic pain

Symptoms Of Prostate Disease

In its earliest stages, prostate disease may or may not be associated with symptoms. The symptoms of prostate disease depend on the condition, but may include:

  • difficulties urinating, such as trouble starting the flow of urine
  • the urge to urinate often, particularly at night
  • feeling as though the bladder can’t be fully emptied
  • painful urination
  • blood in the urine or blood coming from the urethra independent of urination.

Blood in the urine is often due to causes not related to the prostate. Always see your doctor if you find blood in your urine.

What Does A Prostate Orgasm Feel Like

P-spot orgasms are said to feel similar to penile orgasms, only way more intense and felt through the entire body.

There are reports of people having super orgasms, which are a stream of fast, continuous orgasms that cause the body to shudder.

Not everyone ejaculates during a prostate orgasm, but some release a dribble of milky fluid from the urethra.

A little bit of prep can help make the experience a good one whether youre flying solo, or on the giving or receiving end of things.

Ask The Experts: How Do I Know If I Have A Urinary Tract Infection

Each year, urinary tract infections account for close to 10 million doctor visits. A UTI can occur when bacteria gets into your urine and settles in your bladder. Women are four times more likely than men to get a UTI, and the summertime may bring with it an increased risk to get one.

Signs of a UTI may include:

  • Pain or burning when you urinate
  • Frequent urination
  • A strong sense of urgency to urinate
  • Pain in your back or side near the ribs
  • Pressure in your lower belly
  • Urine that is cloudy, bloody or has a strong odor
  • A sensation that you are unable to completely empty your bladder
  • Fever or chills

And consider the following facts as you look to prevent UTIs:

  • Urinating after sex may help flush out bacteria that might have gotten into the urinary tract during intercourse.
  • Certain forms of birth control, such as spermicidal foam and diaphragms, can increase the risk of UTI in some women. Talk to your health care provider about your options.
  • Don’t put off urinating when you need to and don’t rush to finish. Incomplete bladder emptying can increase your risk of UTI.
  • After urinating, wipe from front to back to keep from sweeping bacteria from the rectum or anus toward the vagina and urethra.
