The treatment of prostate cancer varies from patient to patient, thus it is impossible to say which costs will occur. It is possible that only a small tumor has to be removed from the prostate and no further measures are necessary afterwards. In this case, the expenses remain comparably low. If the tumor has spread, more complex and costlier therapies have to be applied.
In principle, foreign patients pay the same prices as German patients, because the bill complies to statutory cost catalogues. If individual services like treatment by a head physician or single room are added, prices increase. For patients from abroad explicitly, travel expenses, costs for translation and accommodation accrue.
Suppose that a patient has been diagnosed with local prostate cancer that has not spread yet. The patient is 65 years old and physically fit for his age. A doctor advises him to have surgery, because there is a high chance that he will recover well. The patient agrees. In this case, his treatment in a clinic would cost approximately 8,694 euros and he would spend 8 days in the hospital. He would be charged according to the flat-rate payment M01B which is the flat-rate that is most frequently used for prostate cancer in Germany. These costs and the days of stay are average values.
How Is Electroporation Treatment Performed
This type of treatment is carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes around 45 minutes. The procedure is performed as a day case.
NanoKnife treatment involves no knives at all. The treatment is delivered via a needle puncture through the skin. Your surgeon will use ultrasound to locate your prostate tumour and then insert up to four needles around it.
Then the NanoKnife machine passes an electric current through the needles, damaging the cell membranes of the cancerous cells which then shrink and die.

Most Accurate Imaging Technique For Prostate Cancer Detection
Contrary to other imaging techniques MRI provides multiple mutually independent parameters for the assessment of the prostate:
- T1- and T2-relaxation time
- Tissue perfusion and
- Spectroscopic information about metabolism.

Survival Time After Diagnosis Doubles
Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose in its early stages when its more treatable. By Stage 3, while it has not spread to other organs, it is often too advanced to be able to remove surgically. Average life expectancy after diagnosis of Stage 3 pancreatic cancer is about nine to 15 months, in part depending on what treatment options are feasible.
The NanoKnife is changing that.
Thus far, were seeing studies that using the NanoKnife virtually doubles life expectancy for pancreatic cancer patients, said Tom Cox, director of Radiology, Radiation Oncology and OSF Cancer Services at OSF Saint Francis. Renal Masses / Renal Tumors
The authors concluded that limitations to this study included the retrospective, small experience and selection bias from inclusion of peripheral tumors distant from critical structures. A larger, prospective series with broader tumor inclusion criteria is needed. The IRE procedure required placement of multiple probes based on lesion location, lesion size, and presence of critical surrounding structures. Three or four probes were routinely used in our patient population, thereby creating variability as well as reliance on the skill set of the treating physician. Variables such as the number of probes, probe tip exposure, and voltage are not completely understood and require additional study to determine the most appropriate conditions for optimal ablation. The authors institutional technique evolved during the study period and almost certainly affected outcomes. An additional limitation was the lack of long-term oncologic follow-up for the study patients, as such follow-up is necessary to fully demonstrate the efficacy of IRE.
The authors stated that this study had several drawbacks. First and foremost was the limited number of patients. In addition, no histologic confirmation of the treated tumors was obtained. Also, SI measurements might be limited because different field strengths were used in follow-up imaging. Nevertheless, the present study may contribute to the understanding and evaluation of IRE treatment of renal masses.
How Is Focal Ire Done
After a full workup to ensure that our patients are suitable for the program they then undergo a day surgery procedure which takes between 40 and 60 minutes. Depending on the extent of the cancer this may simply ablate the lesion, a quarter of the prostate or a half of the prostate. No prostate cancer cells are resistant to this treatment. Large areas can be treated with minimal side effects.
After the treatment patients stay in the day surgery unit for two to four hours and they are discharged home with a Foley catheter in place. Postoperatively pain is minimal and patients are discharged with tablets for mild pain, moderate pain, bladder spasms and relaxation of the prostate and antibiotics as required.
On day 2 a limited multiparametric MRI is performed. The Foley catheter is left in for two to five days depending on the extent of the treatment.

The needles are strategically placed at points around the perimeter of the tumour and, when activated, the IRE system sends electrical pulses or currents between each set of needles to puncture permanent nanometre-sized holes into the tumour. This process causes the cancer cells to become unbalanced and triggers a cell suicide thereby destroying the tumour.
Associate Professor Laurence Harewood has used the NanoKnife to treat prostate cancers that are small and localised but still require treatment. He explained, The NanoKnife allows us to focus just on the tumour, and unlike other treatments, it does not cause damage to surrounding structures such as the nerves, urethra and sphincter muscles. Its a treatment that only kills the cancer cells, leaving the surrounding structures undamaged.
Still No Data Yet On Nanoknife Technology In Treatment Of Prostate Cancer
As yet there are no published data at all on the clinical application of irreversible electroporation technology in the treatment of localized prostate cancer. However, we know there is growing curiosity and so we thought it might be useful to offer readers links to the reasonably reliable source information that is available on the web.
We should be clear up front that NanoKnife technology appears to be a method that has considerable potential in the focal therapy of low-risk, localized prostate cancer . This technology has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for the surgical ablation of soft tissue. It has not been approved for the treatment of prostate cancer or any other specific disease or condition.
However, many men who might consider this form of treatment should also have a serious discussion with their doctor about the risks and benefits of active monitoring as an appropriate option before considering irreversible electroporation. How Is Prostate Cancer Treatment Performed
Treatment for prostate cancer can be divided into early stage and advanced stage. Your doctor will choose the best suitable treatment for you, depending on the stage and classification of prostate cancer, your age, and overall health status. Although, your feelings, expected lifespan, and your opinion will play a major role in choosing the right kind of treatment.
The most common treatment options for prostate cancer include the following:
Watchful waiting or active surveillance
No immediate treatment is carried out, but the patient is followed up at regular intervals to see the progression of the disease. This method is used in elderly patients with short life expectancy and in case of an early disease.
Surgery
