Multivitamins And Supplements: To Take Or Not To Take

People ask me this question quite often: Should I be taking certain vitamins and supplements? And the answer is, quite honestly, It depends. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, you should meet your nutritional needs primarily through diet. For some, however, taking certain supplements may be the best way to get nutrients you may be lacking through diet. Before you get out your wallet, its important to understand the exact impact supplements will have on your body.

According to Mayo Clinic, whole food is not to be replaced by supplements, as supplements cannot replicate all the health benefits of whole foods. For example, fruits and vegetables carry many different nutrients that provide health benefits to the human body. So, depending on your diet and current physical state, spending money on supplements may not be necessary. Listed below are Mayo Clinics three main benefits to whole foods vs. supplements:

Diseases of the prostate gland normally produce urinary symptoms but may also cause pain, especially in the case of acute bacterial prostatitis and later stages of BPH. OTC analgesics such as acetaminophen and NSAIDs can be recommended to relieve pain in prostate disease. A working knowledge of the supplements utilized for prostate disorders will help the pharmacist field patients questions about their use. In general, the pharmacist should refer patients who develop obstructive urinary symptoms to a physician for management.

Selenium Vitamin E Supplements Increase Prostate Cancer Risk

When the SELECT trial started in 2001, there were high hopes it would prove that taking vitamin E or selenium could help prevent prostate cancer. The newest results from the trial show just the oppositethat taking selenium or vitamin E can actually increase the odds of developing prostate cancer.

Bottom line: men shouldnt take selenium or vitamin E as a way to prevent prostate cancer, or anything else for that matter.

I counsel all of my patients to absolutely avoid any dietary supplements that contain selenium or vitamin Eincluding multivitamins, says prostate cancer expert Dr. Marc Garnick, a clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, an oncologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and editor in chief of Harvards Annual Report on Prostate Diseases.

Supplementing Zinc For Maintaining Adequate Zinc Levels In Older Men: Not All The Sources Of Zinc Are Alike

Taken together, more than 50% of men over 60 suffer from BPH, and also have low zinc status. Thus, there is a strong case for establishing a program of zinc supplementation in men over 50 due to the endogenous and exogenous factors presented above. Several studies showed that the treatment of malignant prostate cells with zinc that will increase cellular zinc levels leads to the inhibition of cell proliferation, promotion of apoptosis, and inhibition of cell migration and invasion . However, there are many options available for supplementation, and choosing the correct supplement may be critical to achieving effects in prostate tissues.

The way of cellular uptake and the protection from sequestering by metallothionines, as well as slower excretion profiles may give organic zinc supplements such as ZnAAs an advantage that could be especially beneficial for older individuals. In particular, because older individuals may have restricted dietary habits with nutrients low in zinc or with high concentrations of uptake antagonists. In addition, medications that are taken and that limit zinc availability may be less disruptive for ZnAAs. Besides, metallic amino acid complexes have been used as human supplements and have a long history of safety and efficacy. They are frequently used as a mineral supplement for animals, where extensive research data shows their effectiveness and advantages over inorganic supplements.

    Exercise And Lose Weight

Exercising and losing weight are some of the best things you can do to promote prostate health. Many studies show that moderate or vigorous exercise reduces risk of BPH and urinary tract symptoms and helps with prostatitis as well. Exercise also benefits your cardiovascular health and can help prevent other health and sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction.

If you are overweight, losing weight is one of the most important natural changes you can make in improving your prostate health, whether your concerns are cancer, BPH or prostatitis. A study published in the Journal of Urology found that overweight men, especially men with a high amount of abdominal fat, have an increased risk of BPH. If you are looking to shrink the prostate, losing weight can help you reduce your prostate size and help relieve annoying and frustrating urinary symptoms. On top of that, weight loss can reduce your risk for prostate cancer and help relieve prostatitis, too.

    What Is Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that works like a hormone in the body. It is absorbed in the small intestine and stored in the tissue.

Because its stored in tissues, the body holds on to it for longer periods of time than water-soluble vitamins. The body uses vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorous from the blood stream, so these minerals can be used for proper organ function, nerve health, and bone strength.

We get vitamin D primarily from the sun. Our bodies use a complex process to convert ultraviolet rays into vitamin D. We can also get small amounts of vitamin D from foods like salmon, herring, orange juice, fortified cereals and drinks, or supplements.

Vitamin D has a number of proven health benefits:

    • Boosts immune system and ability to fight infections
    • Improves life expectancy
    • Lowers risk of heart disease and improves cardiovascular function
    • Protects brain function and memory may fight Alzheimers

Vitamin D has also been linked to prostate health and male fertility. High levels of vitamin D maintain strong sperm count with quality semen.

Additionally, vitamin D has been considered a possible treatment for ED because of its positive effects on blood flow .

So how is vitamin D related to BPH?

Vitamins To Reduce Your Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Vitamin D: According to researchers at Northwestern University, vitamin D deficiency was linked to aggressive prostate cancer. Vitamin D deficiency could be a biomarker of advanced prostate tumor progression in large segments of the general population, said Adam B. Murphy, lead author of the study. More research is needed, but it would be wise for men to be screened for Vitamin D deficiency and treated.

Here in lies the controversy: Vitamin D is important for bone health, but there isnt strong clinical evidence that taking extra vitamin D supports a healthy prostate.

So, whats a man to do? Better safer rather than sorry. Talk to your doctor, get a blood test to check your Vitamin D level and decide with your physician what to do.

Green Tea: According to the National Cancer Institute, green tea may have a protective effect against heart disease and cancer, including prostate cancer. Thats because its full of cancer-fighting antioxidants. So go ahead and drink your green tea.

Lycopene: Lycopene is an antioxidant and an organic pigment found in foods like tomatoes, watermelon, apricots, red oranges, and pink grapefruit. Research from animal studies suggest lycopene may have a chemoprotective effect for some cancers like prostate cancer. However, human studies remain inconsistent.
