    Q4 Does Ivc Interfere With Chemotherapy Or Radiotherapy

    Potential interactions between vitamin C and chemotherapeutic agents have long been a matter of debate . Because of vitamin Cs potent antioxidant activity, many clinicians believe they have to avoid the concurrent use of IVC during all chemotherapy regimens. However, different chemotherapeutic agents act via different mechanisms, and only some act via oxidative mechanisms . Nevertheless, it has been recommended for administered natural therapies to allow five half-lives to elapse prior to administration of chemotherapeutic agents to eliminate potential interactions . Because vitamin C has a relatively short half-life of < 2 h in circulation due to rapid renal clearance, IVC is typically administered the day before or after chemotherapy administration . However, if the chemotherapeutic agent does not act via oxidative mechanisms, then concurrent IVC administration may not be an issue and would be more patient centered.

    I Generation Of Hydrogen Peroxide

    Currently, one of the most widely accepted anti-cancer mechanisms proposed for vitamin C is based on its so-called pro-oxidant activity . However, this terminology can be misleading as vitamin C itself always acts as an antioxidant, through donation of electrons the pro-oxidant action occurs subsequently and is therefore an indirect effect. As such, the term pro-drug has been adopted by some researchers . In vitro, vitamin C is able to reduce transition metal ions, such as ferric and cupric cations, which are present in buffers or in cell culture media. The reduced transition metal ions are then able to generate hydrogen peroxide through reduction of oxygen to the superoxide radical, which can react with itself to form hydrogen peroxide. However, whether catalytically available transition metal ions are found in vivo and can cause enhanced oxidative stress is still a matter of some debate since iron and copper are normally sequestered in transport and storage proteins such as transferrin, ferritin and ceruloplasmin . Nevertheless, in some pathological situations, such as iron and copper-overload diseases and during tissue injury, free transition metal ions may become more catalytically available . It has also been postulated that transition metal ions are catalytically more available in the extracellular fluid of the tumor microenvironment .

    We next examined the impact of excess iron on the effect of VC on K562 cell growth in vivo using an experimental transplantation model. On day 0, we transplanted a mixture consisting of Luc-K562 cells and basement membrane matrix subcutaneously into the right flank of NOD/SCID mice. From day 7 after transplantation, we injected the vehicle, VC , saccharated ferric oxide , or both VC and SFO into the mice for a total of 12 days, and measured tumor sizes on day 23 after transplantation. Bioluminescence imaging of Luc-K562 cells in the mice was also performed. We also measured general toxicity during the experiment, and we did not detect obvious behavioral change, morbid consumption such as significant weight loss, or death of mice. On day 23, tumor growth was significantly suppressed in the mice injected with VC, compared to mice injected with vehicle or SFO . However, tumor growth was significantly enhanced in the mice injected with both VC and SFO . We did not detect newly developed tumors other than the tumors initially transplanted, or invasion of the leukemic cells to other organs, including the bone marrow and peripheral blood, of all mice.

In 1972, extending this theory, Ewan Cameron, a Scottish surgeon, hypothesized that ascorbate could suppress cancer development by inhibiting hyaluronidase, which otherwise weakens the extracellular matrix and enables cancer to metastasize. He began treating terminally ill cancer patients and published a case report of 50 patients in which some of the treated patients benefited from high dose vitamin C.

    Evaluation Of Cam Therapies

    It is important that the same scientific methods used to test conventional therapies are used to test CAM therapies. The National Cancer Institute and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health are sponsoring a number of clinical trials at medical centers to test CAM therapies for use in cancer.

    Conventional approaches to cancer treatment have generally been studied for safety and effectiveness through a scientific process that includes clinical trials with large numbers of patients. Less is known about the safety and effectiveness of complementary and alternative methods. Few CAM therapies have been tested using demanding scientific methods. A small number of CAM therapies that were thought to be purely alternative approaches are now being used in cancer treatmentnot as cures, but as complementary therapies that may help patients feel better and recover faster. One example is acupuncture. According to a panel of experts at a National Institutes of Health meeting in November 1997, acupuncture has been found to help control nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and pain related to surgery. However, some approaches, such as the use of laetrile, have been studied and found not to work and to possibly cause harm.

    High Dose Vitamin C Helps Other Treatments Become Less Toxic

    There is a general concern among doctors that high dose vitamin C will somehow interfere with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Most studies that have tested the safety of high dose vitamin C have reported that patients feel better and that if vitamin C is given alongside chemotherapy or radiation therapy, there are less side-effects.

    A good example of this was a study in Germany, where 53 out of 125 breast cancer patients were given IV vitamin C alongside chemotherapy. Those having simultaneous vitamin C therapy reported less than half the intensity of side-effects in particular of nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, depression, sleep disorders, dizziness and haemorrhagic diathesis, concluded the researchers. No side-effects of the IV vitamin C administration were documented.

    Given that vitamin C is an antioxidant some doctors are reluctant to give high dose vitamin C, even though it acts as a pro-oxidant within cancer cells if you get the level high enough, alongside radiation treatment. This concern, however, may not be justified.

    How Vitamin C Works Antioxidant And Pro

    Of all the antioxidants, vitamin C is the most extraordinary. Vitamin C is believed to help prevent and treat cancer by enhancing the immune system stimulating the formation of collagen which is necessary for walling off tumours preventing metastasis by inhibiting a particular enzyme and therefore keeping the ground substance around tumours intact preventing viruses that can cause cancer correcting a vitamin C deficiency which is often seen in cancer patients speeding up wound healing in cancer patients after surgery enhancing the effectiveness of some chemotherapy drugs as well as radiation therapy reducing the toxicity of some chemotherapy preventing free radical damage and neutralising some carcinogens.

    However, at high doses, vitamin C starts to act as a pro-oxidant. The discovery that, in high doses, it acts like a pro-oxidant specifically within cancer cells but not in normal cells opens up a new avenue of understanding for the potential value of mega-dose vitamin C since many chemotherapy drugs are pro-oxidants thats how they weaken cancer cells.

The mice were then transplanted with Luc-K562 cells and injected with vehicle or VC from day 7 for a total of 12 days, and the tumor volumes were measured on day 23 after transplantation. Bioluminescence imaging of Luc-K562 cells in the mice was also performed. On day 23, in mice injected with vehicle, tumor growth was significantly inhibited in mice that had reduced iron, indicating that along with VC, body iron reduction also inhibited the leukemic cell growth . Furthermore, in mice treated with VC, tumor growth was significantly inhibited in mice that had reduced iron, indicating that VC administration and a reduction in body iron synergistically inhibited the leukemic cell growth . We did not detect other developed tumors or invasion of the leukemic cells to other organs in all mice.
