Working With Your Doctors In Your Fight Against Cancer

NJCPCU and the da Vinci Robot for Robotic Prostatectomies

Radiation therapy is often just one part of cancer treatment. To provide seamless care for the best possible outcomes, we work closely with your other doctors, including medical oncologists, surgeons, urologists, gynecologists, primary care physicians and others. We welcome your doctors referrals, and we depend on them for input and often to provide additional care.

Q: Is Radiation Therapy Painful

Radiation therapy itself is painless you will not feel pain when you are on the treatment table. During treatment, side effects may lead to some mild discomfort throughout the course of your treatment. Common side effects of radiation for prostate treatment include increased urinary frequency, nocturia and urgency. Some men notice increased bowel movements. Most of these side effects can be managed with medication, adds Dr. Patel.

Q: What Should Men With Prostate Cancer Look For In A Treatment Center

A: There are several things to look for in a cancer treatment center, but four critical components are:

  • Expertise: Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that positive treatment outcomes are linked to the number of patients a center treats. It is especially clear with prostate and pancreatic cancer that receiving treatment in a center with a high volume of patients and experienced staff makes a huge difference, says Dr. Gejerman. For example, at John Theurer Cancer Center we do more robotic surgeries than any other cancer center in the country and the more you do, the better you get.
  • Team Diversity: Its important to find a cancer center that offers all the different types of treatment you might need under one roof. Having expertise at all levels ensures that the best course of treatment is defined and at your fingertips. Hackensack Meridian Healths cancer teams have tumor board discussions where everyone comes together to discuss a case and determine the best treatment plan, says Dr. Patel. Radiation Oncology requires teamwork among physicians, nurses, dosimetrists, physicists, navigators and therapists to deliver the best plan for that patient.

Nearly all types of prostate cancer start in the cells of the prostate gland, which make prostate fluid. These types of cancer are called adenocarcinomas, and are the most common type of prostate cancer. Other types of cancer can also start in the prostate such as small cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma and sarcomathough those types are rare. Noncancerous growths in the prostate include benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia . What Is Prostate Cancer

The prostate gland is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its primary job is to produce some of the seminal fluids involved in ejaculation. While the prostate is normally the size of a walnut, it can grow to be much larger. When abnormal cells start growing out of control in the prostate, cancer can develop.

Prostate cancer typically develops slowly, and most men dont experience any symptoms at first. As the disease progresses, common symptoms may include:

    • Burning or painful urination
    • More frequent urges to go at night
    • Loss of bladder control
    • Trouble starting or stopping while urinating
    • Blood in urine or semen
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Swelling or pain in the legs or pelvic area

Identifying risk: Data collected over the last decade has made it clear that some men have a genetic predisposition to prostate cancer, though the majority of men still do not have an underlying gene mutation that can be inherited within families. However, for men that do have certain gene mutations in their cancer cells, such as BRCA2, the cancer cells can be targeted with a class of drugs called PARP inhibitors.

The latest: Amongst the newest advances in prostate cancer therapy is 177Lu-PSMA-671, which is comprised of a component that is radioactive, as well as a drug component that targets PSMA . This therapy has been found to be effective even in patients with advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to multiple prior therapies, though not yet approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Radiation Therapy For Advanced Prostate Cancer

    Prostate Cancer NJ

Radiation therapy can be used in combination with surgery and other therapies to treat advanced prostate cancer, especially in cases when cancer cells have broken through the prostate, there is a high risk of recurrence, or not all cancer cells were removed during surgery.

External beam radiation therapy such as IGRT can be combined with hormone therapy or internal radiation therapy called brachytherapy, which involves placing tiny radioactive pellets directly into your prostate to deliver targeted radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy also can be used as a palliative treatment to relieve pain or to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of your body. Hackensack is also one of only a few medical centers to offer an injectable therapy called Xofigo®, for prostate cancer that has spread to your bones.

Rutgers Cancer Institute’s Dr Tina Mayer Shares How Advancements Are Providing Better Outcomes For Men

    7322.jpg

New Brunswick, N.J., September 8, 2021 Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men in the United States aside from skin cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Because prostate cancer is so common, the potential impact of each innovation by physicians and researchers has the power to benefit many men and their families. Over the last decade, advancements have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer that are saving more lives.

Detection: Improvements in biopsy techniques, such as magnetic resonance guided biopsies, have allowed cancers to be more reliably detected. Development of tests that look at the gene profile of prostate cancer cells can help determine the best treatment course for men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer. Advancements in imaging are paving the way to more clearly identifying sites of recurrence, so that more optimal localized therapy can be delivered even in patients whose disease is no longer localized to the prostate.

It is also contributing significantly to the development of improved diagnostic procedures and new tumor-specific treatments.

In addition, the Prostate Cancer Center provides access to cancer prevention and treatment clinical trials. For example, we are currently engaged in studies to determine the effectiveness of selenium and/or vitamin E in the prevention of prostate cancer. These studies are an important part of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Coopers long-term commitment to helping the men of southern New Jersey achieve success in the battle against prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies.
