What You Need To Know About The Prostate Best Prostate Cancer Surgeons In Florida
A enlarged prostate can also cause blockages in the urethra. A blocked urethra can also damage the kidneys. A patient suffering from an enlargement of the prostate may have pain in his lower abdomen and genitals. If pain is present, a digital rectal examination will reveal hard areas. A doctor may prescribe surgery or perform an endoscopic procedure. If the enlarged prostate is not completely removed, it will shrink.
While the size of an enlarged prostate will influence the extent of urinary symptoms, men may experience a range of urinary symptoms. Some men have minimal or no symptoms at all. Some men will have a very enlarged prostate, whereas others will have a mild enlargement. Generally, the symptoms can stabilize over time. Some men may have an enlarged prostate but not notice it. If they have an enlarged colon, their physician can perform a TURP procedure.
Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms
- Abdominal and pelvic CT scan
After taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination, including a digital rectal examination, a PSA blood test will be performed. If the PSA level is elevated, a prostate biopsy will be recommended. The biopsy is an outpatient procedure that is performed with local anesthesia. Several samples of tissue are obtained from the prostate. These samples are what tell us if you have prostate cancer. If the biopsy is positive, other tests may be performed based on your PSA level, cancer grade and findings on exam. Most commonly, a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis will be obtained for clinical staging. In high-risk cases, a bone scan may be recommended to determine if there has been spread to the bones.
The overwhelming majority of prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas, which arises from the glandular component of the prostate. Other rare and atypical types of prostate cancer include:
- Ductal carcinoma
- Clear cell adenocarcinoma
- Giant cell carcinoma
These rare and atypical variants often act aggressively and may respond differently to therapy than the more common prostate adenocarcinoma. As they are rare, however, most men are unaffected by these atypical variants.

Dr Scionti’s Sarasota Prostate Cancer Hifu Center Provides Personalized Prostate Cancer Care
The Scionti Prostate Center Approach: traditional diagnostic methods define every patients disease the same way. However, every single patient is unique. Many patients have a small, slow-growing cancer with favorable genomic properties. I think of this as a lamb because it requires either monitoring or minimal therapy and is unlikely to progress to life threatening disease. On the other hand, if a man is diagnosed with a disease characterized by a higher Gleason score and a poor genomic profile indicating that it is faster growing and more aggressive, or what I call a tiger, a more aggressive total gland treatment is required. We accurately identify the disease, and we develop the most effective treatment with the least impact possible on quality of life. The Scionti Prostate Center provides your personalized pathway to prostate cancer care. Personalized Precision Diagnosis leads to Personalized Precision Care.

An enlarged prostate can also be the cause of other problems. If the enlarged prostate is causing symptoms, the best treatment would be a natural remedy. In the meantime, there are treatments for a wide range of conditions that cause a man to experience pain. A common surgical procedure involves an electric loop, laser, or electro-stimulation. The procedure is a safe and effective option for treating enlarged or symptomatic BPH.
What Percentage Of Your Patients Can Continue To Have Sexual Intercourse After Surgery
Memorial Sloan Kettering warns patients that many if not most will not recover full erectile function after surgery. But the Martini-Klinik in Germany says 92 percent of men under the age of 60 report they do have intercourse after surgery, as do 84 percent of men over the age of 70. In fact, they parse the clinics results even more finely:

Symptomatic treatment of an enlarged prostate usually involves a combination of medication and lifestyle changes. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may be the best option if you suffer from chronic urination. It will help the body adjust to the increased size of the prostate. Also, taking regular urination intervals will help retrain the bladder to function properly. Inactivity also contributes to urine retention, and cold temperatures can increase the urge to urinate.
Invasive treatment of enlarged prostate includes medication that relieves the pressure on the urethra and bladder. However, if the condition is severe, it may require surgical intervention. If treatment is not successful, the enlarged prostate can become a potentially life-threatening disease. As the hormone levels in the body change, the enlarged prostate can lead to various complications, including urinary retention and even cancer. This is why it is critical to see a doctor for further evaluation.
Hormone Therapy For Prostate Cancer
Hormone therapy is used when the tumor has already spread beyond the prostate gland or has metastasized. Male sex hormones regulate the growth of the prostate as well as the division of tumor cells. The principle of treatment is to block the action of the specific male sex hormones, thereby inhibiting the growth of the tumor cells. Although hormone treatment reduces symptoms caused by prostate cancer in most cases, it has not been proven to cure cancer or prolong the life of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Few cases of prostate cancers are not amenable to hormone treatment at all , and a large number of tumors that have initially responded well to hormone treatment become hormone-independent a few years after the treatment start.

The Stages Of Treatment
Because the stage of your cancer is the most influential factor in how your treatment will progress, weve divided the rest of this article into segments based on the stage of your cancer:
Stage 1 prostate cancer is the least advanced stage. This means your cancer is small and hasnt advanced past your prostate.
In this stage, PSA and Grade Group levels are low. Over 99% of people with prostate cancer caught in this stage survive the effects of cancer for at least 5 years. This means that you can still die of other causes, but you have a less than 1% chance of dying of prostate cancer complications.
for stage 1 prostate cancer usually consists of some combination of active surveillance, surgery, or radiation therapy. You may also be eligible for clinical trials that offer newer treatment techniques.
What We Treat In South Florida
Radiation TherapyRadiation therapy is the use of high-energy X-rays, electron beams or radioactive isotopes to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation ionizes or damages the chromosomes in the cell so that they cannot multiply. Radiation can be produced and administered from a machine outside the body or implanted inside the body .
Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation commonly used to treat prostate cancer. In this form of radiation therapy, radioactive pellets â each the size of a grain of rice â are implanted into the prostate through thin plastic tubes into the area where the cancer cells are found. Placement of the radioactive pellets inside the prostate minimizes the radioactive exposure of the surrounding normal tissues. The Brachytherapy procedure takes about one hour and is done on an outpatient basis.
Varian Edge RadiosurgeryCleveland Clinic Florida offers Varian Edge radiosurgical suite which helps us deliver radiation therapy more accurately, precisely and quickly. Varian EdgeTM radiosurgical suite is only offered in a few centers around the world. Many patients only need to come for five outpatient treatments with the Varian EdgeTM, significantly fewer visits than required with traditional radiation technologies.

Tampa General Hospital And Florida Urology Partners Are The First In The Nation To Offer A Groundbreaking Procedure To Protect Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy
Tampa General is announcing a new FDA-cleared procedure that helps spare healthy tissues when delivering curative radiation treatment.
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Tampa General Hospital , in partnership with Florida Urology Partners, are the first in the U.S. to offer a next-generation technology that recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510 clearance.
Barrigel is an injectable, flexible, biodegradable material that provides a barrier between the prostate and rectum to protect the healthy tissue during radiation therapy treatment for prostate cancer. It stays in place for the duration of the radiation treatment and safely dissolves in about three months.
“This is a game changer,” said Dr. Raviender Bukkapatnam, chief of the Urology Institute at Tampa General. “The focus of radiation treatment is to cure cancer non-invasively, and this device helps us protect the areas of the healthy tissues around the prostate gland when delivering a curative radiation treatment. It’s the next big step in cancer care.”
Injected as a gel into the body, Barrigel prevents radiation from penetrating the rectum, reducing potential damage and side effects. The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis in less than 30 minutes and is covered by most insurance plans. The new implant could benefit many of the estimated 268,000 men in the United States diagnosed annually with prostate cancer and who will be treated with radiation therapy.
