Going To Work On An Egg

Does Sugar Feed Prostate Cancer? Does Fatty/Adipose Tissue Attract Cancer? | Mark Moyad, MD, MPH

Dr. Greger and The Times hijacked this Going to Work on an Egg slogan so as to associate eggs with prostate cancer. Back in the 1950s, the UKs Egg Marketing Board created the slogan for a campaign to encourage wholesome, nutritious eggs. In 1965, a series of advertisements were created starring comedian Tony Hancock and actress Patricia Hayes. The one below is quite funny. One can only wonder what terrible diseases Dr. Greger believes arise from eating eels.

/5the Link Between Diet And Cancer

Various studies have been done backing the role of dietary choline in cancer prevention. It is believed that not getting enough of it is linked to an increased risk of fatal health issues. On the other hand, it was also proven that too much intake of the same nutrient can increase the risk of lethal prostate cancer by 70 per cent. Studies have found that choline is found in concentration in prostate cancer cells, blood concentration that can further increase the risk of cancer.

A Refreshing Look At Eggs Dairy And Grains

I was excited to see that a brand new review came out on egg consumption and risk of mortality the other day. Plus a review on dairy consumption and cardiovascular disease just this May. AND an interesting paper on all grains. Thus was born this lengthy, rant-like post, which I feel is too important not to share.

Are Eggs From Hens Raised In Better Conditions Protective Against Cancer

Almost all eggs in the United States are from hens living in a stressed environment under unsanitary cages surrounded by manure infested by flies, maggots, and rodents. Lastly, hens are often starved to increase egg production.

Eggs raised in such unfavorable environments may play a role in the interaction of nutrient content in our bodies but I am not sure how protective or contributory they are in cancer formation.

An enlarged prostate can also be the cause of other problems. If the enlarged prostate is causing symptoms, the best treatment would be a natural remedy. In the meantime, there are treatments for a wide range of conditions that cause a man to experience pain. A common surgical procedure involves an electric loop, laser, or electro-stimulation. The procedure is a safe and effective option for treating enlarged or symptomatic BPH.

Unprocessed And Processed Red Meat

An international panel concluded there was limited evidence suggesting processed meat increases risk of prostate cancer . Since that review, Sinha et al. reported approximately 30% increases in risk of advanced prostate cancer associated with high intakes of red and processed meat . Similar to our findings however, there was no statistically significant association with fatal prostate cancer . A recent population-based case-control study also reported an increased risk of advanced, but not localized, prostate cancer associated with greater intake of hamburgers, processed meat, grilled red meat, and well-done red meat . However, a meta-analysis of prospective studies reported no association between red or processed meat and risk of advanced prostate cancer . These mixed results, combined with our findings, suggest that unprocessed red meat is not associated with an increased risk of lethal prostate cancer, and if any association exists between processed red meat and risk of lethal prostate cancer, it is likely modest.

What Does This Mean For Eggs

It is important to note a few things about the study.

First, the study was not looking for whether eggs caused prostate cancer to begin with. In other words, eggs could very well be a part of a healthy lifestyle that could prevent prostate cancerresearchers were simply looking at what potentially exacerbated prostate cancer.

However, because of the relatively few lethal cases of prostate cancer in the study , Dr. Steven Kaplan, MDa prominent prostate researcher at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center states that the results could simply be a coincidence.

Furthermore, the component of eggs that researchers decided was responsible for the exacerbation of prostate cancer was cholinean important nutrient similar to a B vitamin found in high concentrations in eggs. Choline helps supports brain development and function, energy levels, metabolism, muscle, and nerve function.

Where Did The Story Come From

The study was carried out by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, the University of California in San Francisco, Brigham and Womens Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Funding was provided by the US National Institute of Health.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Cancer Prevention Research.

The media generally reported the study accurately. However, the Daily Mirrors suggestion that a clear link between eggs and prostate cancer has been found may be misleading, as the researchers say that their results contradict previous findings into the association and that more research is needed. But the Mirror does point out that men in the study who ate the most eggs differed from the rest of the participants in important ways, such as weight and smoking status.

Why Prostate Cancer Survivor John Shearron Thinks Itâs Important To Do Your Research | PCRI

You may have heard that eating a lot of certain foods may be harmful for men with prostate cancer, including:

  • dairy foods and calcium
  • red or processed meat

With all of these foods, some studies have suggested they might be harmful for men with prostate cancer, but other studies havent found a link. This means we cant say for sure whether eating less of these foods can help.

Theres no need to cut these foods out of your diet completely. We need more research to fully understand their effect on prostate cancer, but you can still eat most of these foods in moderate amounts as part of a healthy, balanced diet. However, the World Cancer Research Fund recommends avoiding processed meat, as it can increase your risk of some other types of cancer.

What To Eat I Have Prostate Cancer

If you are 1 of 7 men in the U.S. to have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, then you may be debating the nutritional aspects of this diagnosis.

The goal of this self-debate about diet is to reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression. Just as important in regard to diet is to improve your overall health , improve quality of life and increase longevity.

What are the nutrition recommendations for men with prostate cancer? Lets review the conclusions of scientific evidence for known factors as well as briefly mentioning food ideas that have gained popular attention but lack sufficient data to make recommendations.

The Continuous Update Project analyzes worldwide research and makes recommendations. The 2014 report looked at 104 studies from around the world with over 191,000 cases of prostate cancer. This is their findings:

Every now and then, research flies in the face of common wisdom. A study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research has this disorientating effect. The controversial finding associates egg consumption with a significantly higher risk of “lethal” prostate cancer. The findings were summarised in an article by the Osher Center for Integrative Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

Some Advocates Try To Paint Eggs In An Unhealthy Light Which Is Not A New Trend

There are, perhaps, fewer more maligned foods than the incredible, edible egg. For years, eggs were demonized as contributing to heart disease and weight gain, due to the inherent fat and cholesterol content. We are told that eating eggs contributed to the top cause of death in America heart disease.

Gradually, however, mainstream nutritional advice came around on the idea that eggs did not contribute to heart disease, and that they actually might do the opposite. Eggs were rich in protein, healthy fats, and nutrients like B vitamins, selenium and vitamin A that worked to prevent disease far more than promote it.

Of course, this was nothing new to the Kaufmann Diet, which for years had promoted eggs as a healthy source of nutrition. Eggs, in fact, were one of the best foods you could eat on an antifungal dieta diet that eliminated sugar, grains, and foods that are often contained with yeast and/or fungus.

Often, people on such a diet experience relief from a wide variety of health symptoms, many of which have plagued them for many years.

The maligning of eggs, however, was not over. Many people now claim that eggs contribute to another killer diseasecancer.

In a Harvard study, investigators evaluated the diets of 1,294 men who had early stage prostate cancer. The two-year study included men who had participated in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor. The authors discovered that while red meat, fish, total poultry, and skinless poultry were not associated with the recurrence or progression of prostate cancer, egg intake was. When compared with men who rarely ate eggs at all, those who consumed eggs daily had a twofold increase in the risk of prostate cancer progression.

The reason for this increased risk was postulated to be the choline in eggs, which is present in significant amounts . In fact, eggs are the richest source of choline. Previous research has shown that this water-soluble, vitamin-like nutrient has been associated with a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. Therefore, it could be extrapolated that the choline in eggs may increase the chances of both getting the disease and spreading it.

But the dangers of consuming eggs if you have prostate cancer doesnt end there. Other research has shown that choline also significantly increases the risk of dying of prostate cancer a 70% increased risk of lethal prostate cancer to be exact. Another study quoted an even higher percentage: 81 percent higher risk of deadly prostate cancer among men who ate 2.5 or more eggs weekly.

Can Any Foods Help With My Prostate Cancer

You may have heard that certain foods might help slow down the growth of prostate cancer or lower the chance of it coming back after treatment, including:

  • soya beans and other pulses
  • tomatoes and lycopene
  • cruciferous vegetables

With all of these foods, there is some evidence to suggest they might be helpful for men with prostate cancer, but other studies havent shown any effect. This means we cant say for sure whether any of these foods can help. Until theres more evidence that any individual food has an effect on prostate cancer, its best to have a balanced diet that contains all of the food groups.

Can Superfoods Prevent Cancer

The word superfood is used to talk about foods that are supposed to improve health and prevent diseases like cancer, but this is not backed up by science. You might have heard people call blueberries, broccoli, raspberries and other fruits and vegetables superfoods.

Its true that ahealthy, balanced dietcan help to reduce the risk of cancer, but it is unlikely that any single food will make much of a difference on its own.

Why Are Eggs Connected To An Increase Risk Of Prostate Cancer

It seems like the connection between eggs, and prostate cancer is on an nutrient called choline. The crux is that choline is essential for human life and mental performance and we would not do well without it.

And thats what makes the association with nutrition and cancer confusing and frustrating.

Heres another thing, choline is used as a tracer for a specific type of PET scan called Choline C-11 PET scan to find smaller prostate cancer cells in the body that cant be found with other imaging technology.

What does this mean?

A tracer is a substance introduced into the body gobbled up by cancer cells so such cells can light up in images and location of cancer can be found.

Amongst integrative oncologists, it is often said that sugar is bad for cancer because glucose is taken up by cancer cells in another type of PET scan called F-FDG PET.

If the argument with excess sugar consumption is true, then it must apply to choline as well. No?

What Did The Research Involve

Remission and Cure After Relapse Prostate Cancer | Mark Scholz, MD | PCRI

In 1994, the researchers recruited 27,607 men from the existing cohort study in the US. The men did not have prostate or other forms of cancer . They had also had a prostate specific antigen test .

In this study:

  • Information on the mens eating habits was collected every four years.
  • Information regarding prostate cancer diagnosis was collected every two years.
  • From men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, information of treatment and disease progression was collected every two years.
  • The researchers defined lethal prostate cancer as disease that had spread to distant organs or death due to prostate cancer during the studys follow-up period .

The researchers followed up the cohort for 14 years and analysed the associations between eating different amounts of red meat, poultry and eggs and the risk of developing lethal prostate cancer. The researchers grouped each participant according to the average amounts of each type of food they ate per week. For red meat, the subgroups included :

  • less than three servings

For poultry, the subgroups were defined as :

  • less than 1.5 servings
  • over 3.5 servings for week

For eggs, the subgroups were:

  • less than half an egg
  • 0.5 to 1.5 eggs
  • 1.5 to 2.5 eggs

To determine which subgroup each participant would be allocated to, the researchers averaged their responses from all of the dietary questionnaires the participants had completed up until their diagnosis, or until the end of the study .

Incidence Of Lethal Prostate Cancer

We observed 199 events of lethal prostate cancer among 27,607 men during 306,715 person-years. Men who consumed more red meat and eggs had a higher average BMI engaged in less vigorous activity were more likely to be current smokers, have a history of type II diabetes, and have a family history of prostate cancer and tended to eat less poultry and fish and more dairy compared to men who consumed the least red meat or eggs . In contrast, men who consumed more poultry engaged in more vigorous activity, were less likely to be current smokers, and tended to eat less red meat, dairy, and coffee, and more fish compared to men who consumed the least poultry.

Outcome Assessment And Follow

We asked participants biennially if they had been diagnosed with prostate cancer during the previous two years and, after a report of prostate cancer diagnosis, we requested permission to obtain medical records to confirm the diagnosis. Approximately 83% of self-reported cases were confirmed via medical record review. The remaining cases were pending review at the time of analysis , or the medical records were unavailable or lacked sufficient information to confirm the diagnosis . We included unconfirmed cases in our analysis due to the high concordance between self-reported diagnoses and actual diagnoses based on the available medical records. We abstracted date of diagnosis, clinical TNM stage, Gleason sum, PSA at diagnosis, and treatment information from the medical records. Additionally, we mailed biennial follow-up questionnaires to participants with confirmed prostate cancer to update information on treatments and disease progression. Deaths were identified by mail, telephone, and review of the National Death Index we ascertain over 98% of deaths using these methods . Four study physicians determined cause of death from death certificates and medical records.

Our primary outcome was lethal prostate cancer, defined as distant organ metastases due to prostate cancer or prostate cancer death that occurred during the follow-up period of 19942008.

What You Need To Know About The Prostate Do Eggs Cause Prostate Cancer

A enlarged prostate can also cause blockages in the urethra. A blocked urethra can also damage the kidneys. A patient suffering from an enlargement of the prostate may have pain in his lower abdomen and genitals. If pain is present, a digital rectal examination will reveal hard areas. A doctor may prescribe surgery or perform an endoscopic procedure. If the enlarged prostate is not completely removed, it will shrink.

While the size of an enlarged prostate will influence the extent of urinary symptoms, men may experience a range of urinary symptoms. Some men have minimal or no symptoms at all. Some men will have a very enlarged prostate, whereas others will have a mild enlargement. Generally, the symptoms can stabilize over time. Some men may have an enlarged prostate but not notice it. If they have an enlarged colon, their physician can perform a TURP procedure.

Putting Eggs Into Context

Do Eggs Promote Prostate Cancer or Do Vegans Cherry

When it comes to eggs, how the eggs are consumed and how the eggs are sourced are both important factors, and so these are things to consider when looking at studies concerning eggs and when thinking about our egg intake.

Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol and are actually one of the foods with the highest levels of cholesterol that we eat. But eaten by themselves or alongside healthy whole foods, the effect of egg consumption on blood cholesterol is actually minimal, particularly when compared with the effect of trans fats and saturated fats.

In fact, when we look more closely at the overall context of the participants diets in studies examining egg consumption, we realize that it may well be the foods traditionally eaten alongside eggs that are increasing the risk of chronic illnesses: foods such as bacon, sausage, butter, cheese, and refined carbohydrates like white bread and sugar. Eggs are also a hidden ingredient in numerous baked goods. In many people with diets high in eggs, the eggs are often one part of an overall unhealthy dietary pattern that contributes to risk factors for disease.

For example, processed foods like those listed above are unequivocally bad for us, and there are hundreds of studies linking them to increased diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer risk: particularly processed meats like bacon, hotdogs, and deli meats, which are actually classified as carcinogens.
