Advanced Treatment For Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. In fact, the National Cancer Institute has estimated that nearly 250,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. Approximately one out of every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Advanced prostate cancer, also known as metastatic prostate cancer, occurs when cancer cells spread beyond the prostate gland to other parts of the body. Even men with advanced prostate cancer have several excellent prostate cancer treatments to choose from. Treatment will depend on your cancer stage, your age and your overall health.

Primary treatment options include hormone therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy. The goal of hormone therapy is to block testosterone, which prostate cancer cells need in order to grow and spread. Immunotherapy is designed to activate the mans immune system to attack prostate cancer. Chemotherapy uses special chemicals to stop cancer cell growth.

Your custom cancer treatment plan

Your Scripps MD Anderson cancer team will develop a customized treatment plan outlining the treatments and therapies we recommend for your care. Before you begin treatment, you and your physician will review your plan together and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

Your prostate cancer treatment plan generally includes:

  • Family and medical history
  • A summary of your cancer diagnosis and staging information
  • Diagnostic testing completed
  • Plans for surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and/or other treatments
  • Potential side effects of treatments
  • Contact information for your cancer care team members

Along with helping you understand your course of treatment and encouraging discussion between you and your physician, your plan helps your team coordinate your care. You also can share your treatment plan with other providers who may be involved in your medical care.

Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer Include:

  • Trouble Urinating
  • Blood in your urine
  • Pain in your hips or back
  • Erectile dysfunction

Because these symptoms may overlap with those of other conditions, it is important to get the correct diagnosis to find the right treatment. To help determine the best option for you the American Cancer Society recommends prostate screenings.

What is a Prostate Screening?

As with all cancers, an important part of the treatment process is detecting the cancer as early as possible. SouthWest Urology recommends following the American Cancer Societys guide for prostate cancer screening. The screening process will include the following:

  • A digital rectal exam

Typically, if an initial digital rectal exam comes back with abnormal results, the next step would be a PSA blood test followed by an imaging test of the prostate gland. Should your PSA levels be high, a prostate biopsy may be recommended as a follow up to the screening. A biopsy is a procedure in which small samples of the prostate are removed and then looked at under a microscope. If prostate cancer is found on a biopsy, this test can also help tell how likely it is that the cancer will grow and spread quickly.

If you are interested in getting a prostate screening, please fill out the form, and one of our team members will contact you to set up an appointment.

Types Of Prostate Cancer

There is only one main type of prostate cancer: adenocarcinoma. Other types, such as sarcomas and small cell and transitional cell carcinomas, are very rare. A condition known as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia may turn into cancer, but this connection isnt proven.

Adenocarcinomas

Prostate sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that starts in the soft tissue.

Small cell carcinomas

This rare type of prostate cancer is characterized by small, round cells. It tends to grow more quickly than adenocarcinomas.

Transitional cell carcinomas

Also known as urothelial cancer, transitional cell prostate cancer is a rare cancer that usually starts in the cells lining the urethra, but may start in the prostate.

Prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia

If youre diagnosed with PIN, your doctor may recommend a biopsy and/or screenings with a prostate-specific antigen blood test to monitor your prostate health. Treatment for PIN is not recommended.

Surgery To Remove The Prostate

Surgery for prostate cancer involves removing the prostate gland , some surrounding tissue and a few lymph nodes. Surgery is an option for treating cancer thats confined to the prostate. Its sometimes used to treat advanced prostate cancer in combination with other treatments. How Is Prostate Cancer Treated

Prostate cancer: warning signs, diagnosis and treatment

Because prostate cancer grows slowly, it may not always require treatment. In some cases, prostate cancer may not pose a significant threat to your life, and it can be observed carefully over time instead of treated immediately. This is called active surveillance.

When treatment is needed, the most effective prostate cancer treatment plan will depend on several factors, including:

  • Your age, other medical conditions and overall health
  • The stage of your cancer
  • Whether the cancer has spread
  • Potential side effects of treatment

Prostate cancer treatment options may include:

  • Surgery to remove the cancer
  • Radiation therapy to kill cancer cells with radiation
  • Vaccine therapy and gene therapy
  • Hormone therapy using hormone-blocking medication to prevent cancer growth
  • Active surveillance

Find The Best Surgeon You Can Get It Done Right

Radical prostatectomy is a very difficult operation. It takes not only skill, but the kind of expertise you get only after being involved in a lot of procedures, first from the sidelines as a doctor in training, and then learning how to do it meticulously with the guidance of an expert surgeon.

The very best prostate surgeons specialize in the prostate. Thats often all they do, and they do a lot of these procedures every year.

You dont want to be part of the learning curve.

Another point: Because there are so many bad surgeons out there, you cant trust everything you read on the internet or from hospitals propaganda.

Our goal is to weed out the bad surgeons, so they stop doing procedures they arent skilled enough to do.

As for you, well, this is your one shot at this. Do your due diligence. How can you find the right surgeon? We have developed this checklist with the help of three experts. Please. Take the following things into consideration before you go under the knife:
