CONCORD, Mass.

For many men in the United States, getting diagnosed with prostate cancer is both stressful and predictable. About one in eight develop the disease during their lifetime.

Fortunately, in many cases, the tumors grow slowly, requiring no treatment.

That’s how it started for Mark, but then, four years after the initial diagnosis, tests showed his prostate cancer had become more aggressive.

“I thought it would be smart to just deal with it,” he said.

But how?

“This location is in a very busy area,” said Dr. Louis Liou, an expert in treating prostate cancer at Emerson Health in Concord.

He said his patients generally want to preserve two functions: the ability to urinate and have sex.

However, there’s a risk of complications with the most common treatments, such as surgery and radiation.

That’s why Liou said he often suggests a different option using cryotherapy, which requires a special tool to freeze the cancerous lesions in the prostate, killing the cells.

“The ice ball is a little daunting, but again, we’re able to target that area,” he said. “Subsequently, I think, we have less side effects because we do that.”

Liou said that’s an important consideration for most men.

One major drawback is cancer could return in normal prostate tissue that was not treated.

What Is Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer occurs when a malignant tumor forms in your prostate gland. Doctors currently do not know what causes prostate cancer, but as with all cancers, it begins when the cells in your prostate tissue become abnormal or altered, forming cancerous cells.

Usually, prostate cancer grows slowly, but if left untreated, it can spread outside of the prostate gland and become more aggressive. However, whether the prostate cancer is widespread or not, it is still a disease that should be treated immediately for the best chances of recovery.

Expertise In Diagnosing And Staging Cancers

Pin on MASS: DOCTORS

Exact diagnosis and staging are critical to defining the appropriate treatment for your cancer, including establishing whether you are a candidate for active surveillance. Your team will include sub-specialized pathologists, who work exclusively on analyzing genitourinary tumors, and whose training and experience help ensure your treatment plan is based on a precise diagnosis. Our pathologists perform a Gleason score analysis of every prostate tumor to assess the likelihood of tumor spread.

In addition to using the standard imaging techniques, we are conducting clinical trials on the use of novel techniques to diagnose and stage prostate cancer.

These include:

  • New MRI techniques, including diffusion-weighted MRI, which more accurately detect cancer cells
  • Nanoparticle-enhanced MRI, an imaging technology developed here that can find cancerous lymph nodes missed by biopsies.

Radiation Therapy For Prostate Cancer

When choosing a radical method of treatment for prostate cancer its important to know that not all cancer cases require surgery. Modern, high-precision radiation therapy can show good results without significantly disrupting the body functions. Treatment of prostate cancer with radiation therapy does not restrict the lifestyle after the treatment sessions.

The total volume of radiation therapy required for prostate cancer treatment is very individual, and is based on general health condition of the patient, presence of comorbidities, etc.

The techniques that allow the precise delivery of tumor-destroying radiation target only the tumor, with minimal impact on the adjacent healthy tissues.

How Mistakes Are Made In Diagnosis

All older men in their 50s-70s should have prostate exams periodically, and the two main ways doctors detect this type of cancer is through a digital rectal exam as well as a blood test that tests for prostate-specific antigen . Doctors may also use ultrasounds or a biopsy to aid them in detection.

Sometimes, physicians make mistakes when they fail to record PSA benchmarks, fail to communicate the test results to their patients, or dont test for prostate cancer altogether. All of these mistakes contribute to a misdiagnosis or delay in diagnosis. The longer a person goes without getting the treatment they need, the worse their cancer can get, leading to possible death.

Your Prostate Cancer Medical Team Members

Here are the important members of a health care team that treats advanced prostate cancer:

Most experts believe that a team approach works best for treating prostate cancer. The medical oncologist, urologist, and radiation oncologist should be primary members of the team.

Abundant and sometimes conflicting information about treatment options can overwhelm patients. This type of information needs clear explanation. Medical oncologists are well equipped to act in this role. They are familiar with the latest study results and findings. Their input may help men make informed choices about traditional and cutting-edge therapies. In addition, medical oncologists can tell men about clinical trials that may be available.

Some men live with prostate cancer for many years. The medical team can offer various levels of support to meet their changing needs throughout their journey. Men who have time to develop a trusting relationship with their medical team, including the medical oncologist and urologist, report feeling more peaceful and less stressed toward the end stage of their lives.
