Being lucky enough to enjoy being retired and considering myself to be reasonably fit, the affects of BPH were beginning to have a detrimental affect on my quality of life. My prostate started giving me problems in my mid-fifties with frequent visits to the toilet at night. I went to see my doctor who confirmed an enlarged prostate but suggested that apart from an annual PSA test I should leave everything alone for as long as possible on reflection I think this was good advice.At the beginning of 2018 it was apparent that I was only getting 2 hours of sleep between visits to the toilet as many as 4/5 times each night. Following further examinations, I was prescribed tablets as a first option to relax the prostate and I took these for 6 months however there was no significant improvement and the Consultant suggested a TURPs procedure.

What If I Can’t Have Surgery
Surgery isnt always an option you may not be fit or well enough for an operation, or you may not like the idea of it. If surgery isnt suitable for you and lifestyle changes and medicines havent worked, your doctor or nurse may suggest using a catheter. This is a thin, flexible tube used to drain urine from your bladder. The catheter may be permanent or temporary.
A permanent catheter is passed up into the bladder through your penis, or through a small cut in your abdomen. The catheter is usually attached to a drainage bag, which you strap on to your body under your clothing. Your doctor or nurse will usually change your catheter every 12 weeks.
A temporary catheter is where you put a catheter in yourself when you need to urinate, rather than leaving one in all the time. Your doctor or nurse will show you how to put the catheter in and tell you how often to use it. Some men can urinate quite well without a catheter and only use it once a day to make sure they empty their bladder regularly. Other men need to use a temporary catheter several times a day.
You can lower your chances of getting a urine infection by keeping your catheter and the area around it clean. You may find the following tips helpful.
Let your nurse know if your catheter isnt draining properly. If urine hasnt drained from your bladder for 2 to 3 hours, contact your GP or district nurse straight away.

Bph Causes Urinary Problems Such As:
A weak urine stream Difficulty getting a urine stream started and completely stopped Frequently feeling like you need to urinate Feeling that you have not completely emptied your bladder after you urinate.
How is BPH diagnosed? BPH is diagnosed by a urologist who will evaluate your symptoms and do a series of tests including a digital rectal exam, a prostate-specific antigen blood test, and a urine test. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the type of treatment you receive depends on the severity of the condition. The most optimal treatment option depends on the size of the prostate, age, overall health, and the severity of the symptoms.
Two of the most common and effective treatment options available for BPH include a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate and Greenlight Laser PVP. A TURP is an invasive surgical procedure that removes excess growth around the prostate gland. It is performed by a urologist in a hospital under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia coupled with a sedative.
A resectoscope or a spring-action cutting tool, is inserted into the urethra to access the enlarged prostate gland. The electricity generated through the cutting tool removes small pieces of tissue until the urethra is no longer restricted.

Looking back, I never had would be considered a good flow. During the time it took for me to pass urine, three other blokes would come and go. It got to a point where I felt increasingly self-conscious about it and it put me off going out.

What Risks Are There
As with any surgery, there are inherent risks associated with anesthesia. But for the surgery itself, about three-quarters of guys we see who undergo this procedure develop the previously mentioned retrograde ejaculation, although, this complication doesnt affect their ability to orgasm or have erections.
Furthermore, about three to five percent of men we see develop urinary incontinence, which is when a few drops of urine leak out when they sneeze, cough, or do some strenuous activity. For many guys, it goes away after a few weeks. For some, the side effects can be long-lasting.

An Amazing Treatment Carried Out Quickly And Efficiently

For many years, since the early 1990s I had terrible urgency problems whereby the desire to urinate suddenly happened and I just had to find anywhere suitable to go, being as discrete as I could if in a busy place.

Greenlight Laser Treatment Of Bph
The GreenLight Laser is used in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia , commonly known as enlargement of the Prostate. GreenLight laser treatment is a therapy that evaporates prostatic tissue which is blocking the outlet of the bladder. It is performed under anesthesia by placing a telescope into the urethra up to the level of the prostate. The laser fiber is guided through the scope and the prostate tissue is then quickly and gently vaporized. Other names for the procedure include photovaporization of the prostate or photoselective vaporization of the prostate or laser ablation of the prostate. You may also see the GreenLight laser referred to as a KTP laser.
The University of Virginia has dedictated physicians who are trained in the use of the GreenLight laser.
How does GreenLight differ from other laser treatments of the prostate?
Several other laser therapies exist. Interstitial laser therapy is a type of thermotherapy that heats the prostate tissue, but does not vaporize or remove it. Holmium laser therapy is another high power laser that evaporates tissue in a procedure similar to the GreenLight. At the University of Virginia, we use the new GreenLight HPS system, which is a higher powered version of the original GreenLight laser made by LaserScope/AMS. The higher powered GreenLight HPS allows the surgeon to remove more of the obstructing prostate tissue in a shorter time than the older GreenLight system.

What Is The Recovery Like For Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy Surgery
Your recovery from greenlight laser prostatectomy surgery will depend on multiple factors, including your age, fitness level and the nature of your procedure.
When you recover from your anaesthetic, you may have a catheter in your urethra. This will help to drain urine from your bladder and is only usually required for the first 24 hours. Your nursing team will explain how to manage your catheter.
You may feel some discomfort which should be relieved by painkillers. Some men struggle to pass urine after this procedure and others experience an overactive bladder where they need to go to the toilet more frequently, but both are usually temporary. You may also notice a temporary stinging in your penis and some men notice blood in their semen in the days and weeks after their procedure.
Most men go on to urinate normally within six weeks of having greenlight laser prostatectomy surgery but it may take up to four months for your bladder function to fully improve.
You may need up to a week off work and will need to avoid heavy lifting for around three weeks.

It is the eight day post laser turp surgery for me. I felt like posting after reading ironwolfs post above. His post left me with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. 😀 His description of his post surgery experiences are very similar to mine.
My surgery was on Thursday morning. Just prior to surgery I mentioned having a pain in my chest, they immediately did a EKG and it was fine. I awoke from surgery to a painful burning feeling like I needed to pee very bad. A little while later the pain in my chest returned and they did another EKG. Again it was ok , I’m 53 in good shape with no history of heart problems.
All this time they have big bags of saline flushing out my bladder , the outflow looked like watermelon juice. The plan was to go home that afternoon, but since I mentioned the gas, they decided to keep me overnight. This may have been a good thing because I was flushed until discharged at 3:00PM the next day. My outflow looked normal by then.
Did I mention catheters are a major pain? Not only do they make you feel like you need to pee all the time, but if you get morning wood like I do, well let me just advise you to keep some ice water and a rag close by.
The flow was slowly getting better but still with the painful burning sensation and continued like that until this morning. This has been the best morning so far. Pretty good flow and the burning is almost gone! YEAH!!!
What To Know About Bph
BPH describes theenlargement of the prostate gland that sits beneath your bladder. This enlargement is common in men as they get older.
The urethra, the tube that channels urine from your bladder and out of your body, passes through the center of the prostate. When the prostate becomes swollen or enlarged, it can press on the urethra and block the flow of urine.

Two independent authors screened all retrieved studies. A third author solved discrepancies. Studies were included based on PICOS eligibility criteria. Prospective, retrospective, and RCTs were accepted. Meeting abstracts were excluded. Case reports, non-English, animal, and pediatric studies were also excluded. The full text of the screened papers was selected if found relevant to the topic of this review. The research was further implemented by the manual search based on the references of the full-text relevant papers.
