Beaumont Health Offers Revolutionary New Treatment For Enlarged Prostates

Minimally invasive, water jet robotic procedure shrinks prostate while improving, preserving function

Beaumont Health is the first and only health system in Michigan to offer a novel new treatment for patients with enlarged prostates, particularly those with hard-to-treat, very large prostates.

The PROCEPT BioRobotics BPH Robotic System is a computer-guided treatment system for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The procedure uses aquablation therapy, or small water jets, to remove sections of the prostate. Urologists at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak began treating patients with the system in November 2020.

Beaumont now offers the most comprehensive treatment options available for patients with enlarged prostates, said Beaumont urologist Dr. Jason Hafron. The computer can actually sculpt the prostate to preserve ejaculatory function, which is not possible with the older procedures.

There are no incisions during the procedure, and it can be completed in approximately 40 minutes.

Were leaping ahead with this technology, especially for men with very large prostates, added Dr. Hafron.

One of Beaumonts first patients, Joe Rice, 67, of Waterford, had what is considered a super enlarged prostate. Where a typical healthy adult males prostate weighs 40 grams, Rices was measured at 129 grams. The procedure reduced his prostate by about 65%, or 84 grams, making it much closer to normal size with an open channel, said Dr. Hafron.

Don’t Miss: Does Prostate Removal Make You Impotent

Symptoms Of Benign Prostate Enlargement

The symptoms of benign prostate enlargement are caused by the enlarged prostate placing pressure on the bladder and urethra .

This can affect urination in a number of ways. For example, it can:

  • make it difficult for you to start urinating
  • weaken the flow of urine or cause “stopping and starting”
  • cause you to strain to pass urine
  • cause you to need to urinate frequently
  • cause you to wake up frequently during the night to urinate
  • cause a sudden urge to urinate, which can result in urinary incontinence if you can’t find a toilet quickly enough
  • cause you to not be able to empty your bladder fully
  • cause blood in the urine

In the later stages, benign prostate enlargement can cause urine retention and other complications such as bladder stones, bladder infections and kidney damage.

How Does Prostate Growth Occur

How to Cure an Enlarged Prostate

One of the central and important body organs in the male reproductive system is the prostate. It is located below the bladder and borders the urethra. The prostate takes urine from the bladder. Its function is to assist in making fluid in the semen, which bears sperm from the testicles. After men age, the size of the prostate goes from a walnut to an apricot.

The prostate gland goes through two stages of growth. The first is when you are in your teen years. During this time, it grows bigger by two sizes than it is. After twenty-five years, it grows more, although it turns out to be a complication if the growth continues. It is termed prostate enlargement, which exhibits negative implications on prostate functions.

Prostate growing is a noncancerous disease. The tissue layer that borders the prostate stops it from external growth. It results in the prostate gland thrusting the urethra. But, there are natural remedies for enlarged prostate.

Silodosin 4 mg to 8 mg daily 4 mg to 8 mg daily

Finasteride

Also, little research has been done on whether race or age makes a difference in how men respond to the BPH drugs. Some major studies have included very elderly men and black men, but so far there is no definitive evidence that the effectiveness or side effects of treatment differ between black and white men or older men.

Silodosin is the newest alpha-blocker. The FDA approved this medicine in late 2008. In two studies involving a total of 923 men, those receiving Rapaflo showed an improvement in their symptoms and urinary-flow rate compared with those who took a placebo pill over 12 weeks. But since the drug does not have the long track record of use of some of the other alpha-blockers, its safety profile is not yet firmly established. In addition, its more expensive. At $159-$163 per month, depending on dose, it is one of the most expensive alpha-blockers, and costs significantly more than generic doxazosin, which runs $8 or less per month. For those reasons, wed advise it not be used as initial treatment at this time.

How the drugs work

Studies dont indicate any difference in the effectiveness or safety of finasteride and dutasteride, and, at the current time, neither is known to have any advantages over the other.

How to Treat An Enlarged Prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia): 12 Natural Treatments

Enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia , is a common condition as men get older. By age 60, about 30% of men show moderate to severe symptoms of BPH by age 80, it is 50%. An enlarged prostate gland can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as a weak urine stream, urine stream that starts and stops, frequently getting up at night to urinate, and inability to void the bladder.

There are many different treatment options for BPH, ranging from behavior medications to surgery. A minimally invasive option is bipolar enucleation of the prostate, or BipoLEP. If you are considering treatment, here’s what you need to know.

Prostate anatomy

The prostate is a small organ that sits at the bottom of the bladder. The urethra, the tube the drains the bladder, runs through the middle of the prostate.

Early in a mans life, the prostate is roughly the size of a walnut or a small tangerine. Often around 50, the prostate increases in size. For some men, this change closes off the urethra and makes it more difficult for the bladder to empty.

The prostate has two parts. The adenoma is the inner part that surrounds urethra. It is the part of the prostate that grows as men get older. The capsule is the outer part of the prostate and does not change in size over the course of life. A good analogy is to think of an orange. The orange peel represents the capsule, and the fruit represents the adenoma.

What Should I Do If I Forget A Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you interrupt your treatment for several days or longer, call your doctor before restarting the medication, especially if you take more than one capsule of tamsulosin a day.

Talking To Your Doctor

Above all, if you have prostate gland enlargement, you need to be careful about the medications you use.

Avoid medicating yourself based on the information you find on forums and other similar platforms. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor about medications you need to take.

Your healthcare provider will inform you about the most suitable prostate medicine you need to take. Or those less safe that you should avoid that may be bad for your prostate.

For some medications, its necessary to adjust the dosage. This is something only your doctor can .

If you feel like youre not getting better, express your concerns to a healthcare provider, and they may prescribe the most suitable medications for your condition.

Feel free to ask your doctor or dietitian for tips about the diet that is the best for you, the best foods to eat or drink to help you to feel better, and what to avoid.

Above all, regular checkups at the doctors office are important. The doctor may order a PSA test to evaluate for the presence of various problems ranging from prostate cancer to acute bacterial prostatitis.

Why Would You Have Surgery For A Benign Prostate Condition

The prostate is the walnut-sized gland that surrounds the urethra in a male. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body. One of the non-cancerous conditions that can affect the prostate is called benign prostatic hyperplasia , which is also known as enlarged prostate.

BPH is the most common prostate problem in men over age 50. About half of men in their 50s and as many as 90% of men in their 70s and 80s have enlarged prostates.

Enlarged prostate surgery is recommended if less invasive treatments have failed, or if you have severe symptoms such as:

  • An inability to urinate.
  • Excessive blood in the urine.
  • Bladder stones.
  • Kidney damage.

Prostate cancer and infertility arent symptoms or causes of BPH. Benign prostatic hyperplasia doesnt cause erectile problems.

Prostate procedures for BPH range from minimally invasive treatments to more extensive surgeries. Your healthcare provider will help you decide which type of prostate surgery is best for you.

Tips For Coping With An Enlarged Prostate

When a man reaches about age 25, his prostate begins to grow. This natural growth is called benign prostatic hyperplasia and it is the most common cause of prostate enlargement. BPH is a benign condition that does not lead to prostate cancer, though the two problems can coexist.

Although 50% to 60% of men with BPH may never develop any symptoms, others find that BPH can make life miserable. The symptoms of BPH include:

  • a hesitant, interrupted, weak urine stream
  • urgency, leaking, or dribbling
  • a sense of incomplete emptying
  • more frequent urination, especially at night.

As a result, many men seek treatment. The good news is that treatments are constantly being improved. Patients and their physicians now have more medications to choose from, so if one doesnt do the trick, another can be prescribed. And thanks to some refinements, surgical treatments are more effective and have fewer side effects than ever before.

But there are some things men dealing with BPH can do on their own. When symptoms are not particularly bothersome, watchful waiting may be the best way to proceed. This involves regular monitoring to make sure complications arent developing, but no treatment. For more troubling symptoms, most doctors begin by recommending a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. Often this will be enough to relieve the worst symptoms and prevent the need for surgery

Over the past month:

How often have you had a sensation of not emptying your bladder completely after you finish urinating?

How frequently have you urinated again less than two hours after you finished urinating?

How difficult have you found it to postpone urination?

How often have you had a weak urinary stream?

How frequently have you had to push or strain to begin urination?

How many times did you typically get up to urinate from the time you went to bed until the time you got up for good?

And finally:
If you were to spend the rest of your life with your urinary condition the way it is now, how would you feel about that?

Your doctor might also perform a digital rectal exam to assess the size and firmness of your prostate and to check for the presence of lumps that might be an indication of prostate cancer, and/or discuss doing a blood test for prostate cancer, called the prostate-specific antigen, or PSA test. But you should know that there is considerable disagreement not only about the usefulness of these procedures but also whether they should be performed at all. For example, the U.S. Preventive

Treatment Option For Bph: The Urolift System

Urologists at UCLA Urology are now offering UroLift, a new treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia .

UroLift Offers Relief for BPH

When Jeff Brenner first began experiencing bothersome urinary symptoms in his 40s, he attributed it to middle age and figured it was something he could live with.

An enlarged prostate compresses on the urethra, making it difficult for urine to flow. The UroLift Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate. The device compresses the tissue and delivers tiny implants to lift and hold prostate tissue out of the way, thus opening the urethra. The permanent implants keep the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain. The UroLift Device is removed, leaving an open urethra for urine to flow.

What Is The Best Medicine For Enlarged Prostate

  • What is the best medicine for enlarged prostate?
  • Treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia have increased significantly in recent years. A few years ago, men suffering from BPH only had surgery as the main treatment option. This has changed as drug-makers have developed a number of drugs to offer more choices for alleviating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. In fact, medicines now have become the most common treatment method for men with mild-to-moderate BPH. When administered, the drugs can calm bladder and prostate muscles, shrink the prostate, stop prostate growth or relieve symptoms of BPH, such as weak urine streams or the need to urinate several times per day.

Here are some drugs commonly used to treat BPH. Before using any drug, make sure to speak with your doctor to find out which medicine is appropriate for you.
