What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Docetaxel

Managing Side Effects of Chemotherapy | Prostate Cancer Staging Guide

You should not receive this medicine if you have:

  • a low white blood cell count or
  • a history of severe allergic reaction to docetaxel or to any medicine that contains polysorbate 80.

Tell your doctor about your complete health history and all medications you have used. Docetaxel can cause severe side effects including death, especially:

  • if you receive high doses
  • if you have liver disease or
  • if you have non-small cell lung cancer and you have been treated in the past with chemotherapy that contains platinum .

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • fluid retention or
  • if you drink alcohol.

Using docetaxel may increase your risk of developing other types of cancer . This risk may continue for several months or years after you have received docetaxel. Ask your doctor about your specific risk.

Docetaxel can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects if the mother or the father is using this medicine.

  • If you are a woman, do not use docetaxel if you are pregnant. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine and for at least 6 months after your last dose.
  • If you are a man, use effective birth control if your sex partner is able to get pregnant. Keep using birth control for at least 3 months after your last dose.
  • Tell your doctor right away if a pregnancy occurs while either the mother or the father is using docetaxel.

Enterocolitis And Neutropenic Colitis

Enterocolitis and neutropenic colitis have occurred in patients treated with TAXOTERE alone and in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, despite the coadministration of G-CSF. Caution is recommended for patients with neutropenia, particularly at risk for developing gastrointestinal complications. Enterocolitis and neutropenic enterocolitis may develop at any time, and could lead to death as early as the first day of symptom onset. Monitor patients closely from onset of any symptoms of gastrointestinal toxicity. Inform patients to contact their healthcare provider with new, or worsening symptoms of gastrointestinal toxicity .

Presentation Of Side Effects And Management Of Docetaxel

Docetaxel causes a variety of acute and long-term side effects. Fortunately, most of the common treatment-related toxicities, such as infusion reactions, febrile neutropenia, fatigue, and fluid retention are resolved between cycles of treatment or reversible upon treatment discontinuation. Prior to therapy administration, patients are screened for adequate renal function, hepatic function, and bone marrow function to ensure these acute side-effects are resolved. However, peripheral neuropathy is a long-term side effect of taxane chemotherapy that may be debilitating for patients well after completion of treatment.

What Are The Side Effects Of Taxotere For Prostate Cancer

Pin on cancer

Taxotere, like many other chemotherapy drugs, is highly potent and efficacious against its microtubule target. Unfortunately, the drugs chemistry and mechanism also make patients prone to serious adverse events. There are two main reasons why side effects occur.

First, Taxotere does not discriminate between cancerous and non-cancerous regions of the body. The drug goes to specific locations according to its biodistribution and will affect those areas regardless of whether or not they are healthy. Doctors must weigh the consequences of Taxotere affecting unwanted locations when prescribing it.

Second, Taxotere is often prescribed in conjunction with other medications, like steroids. These drugs suppress the bodys immune system to enhance the effect of chemotherapy.

Observed side effects Taxotere patients have experienced include:

  • Development of infections
  • Functional GI symptoms, like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or vomiting
  • Irritation of the liver

Chemotherapy For Prostate Cancer

Chemotherapy refers to any type of therapy that uses chemicals to kill or halt the growth of cancer cells. While chemotherapy is unlikely to cure prostate cancer, it may provide some benefits to patients. For example, it may be used:

  • To relieve symptoms associated with very advanced or metastatic disease, improving the patients quality of life

  • To improve the outcome of prostate cancer surgery if administered for a short time after the procedure

  • To work in conjunction with hormone therapy and improve the patient outcome

  • To prolong the life of a prostate cancer patient who no longer responds to hormone therapy

  • To treat men with advanced prostate cancer who carry the AR-V7 gene variant

What Are The Important Side Effects Of Taxotere

Following are some of the common side effects associated with docetaxel. Patients who have these or other side effects should tell their doctor or nurse.

The most common side effects of docetaxel include:

  • changes in your sense of taste
  • feeling short of breath

Incidence varies depending on the indication.

Adverse reactions are described according to indication. Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared to rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

Responding patients may not experience an improvement in performance status on therapy and may experience worsening. The relationship between changes in performance status, response to therapy, and treatment-related side effects has not been established.

Treating Smarter Not Harder: Thousands Of Men Could Be Spared Side Effects Of Docetaxel Chemotherapy

Prostate Cancer Chemotherapy Basics | Ask a Prostate Expert, Mark Scholz, MD

Results from an international study funded by Prostate Cancer UK could change the way we treat advanced prostate cancer, enabling healthcare teams to target those men who will benefit most from chemotherapy, and to reduce side effects in others.

A key part of our research strategy is developing better treatments. Often, this means developing new medicines that are more effective at treating prostate cancer.
But it also means finding better ways to use existing treatments, so that men with prostate cancer can live longer lives with fewer side effects.

As part of this work, and thanks to your support, weve invested more than £2.5m into researchers analysing the results of the STAMPEDE trial, which aims to find the best way to treat men with advanced prostate cancer .

Now, new analysis of STAMPEDE and two other trials has showed that some men with advanced prostate cancer benefit much more than others from the chemotherapy docetaxel.

Men with large prostate tumours, who also had many secondary tumours, were almost three times as likely to be alive after five years when given docetaxel chemotherapy alongside the usual hormone therapy.

Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, the results pave the way for more personalised treatments, enabling healthcare teams to target docetaxel at those who will benefit the most, while moving others more quickly onto different treatments that will work for them.

Taxotere And Novantrone Sequence Evaluated As Initial Chemotherapy For Hormone

According to results recently published in the journal Cancer, initial chemotherapy treatment with the agent Taxotere® followed by Novantrone® appears more favorable than treatment with initial Novantrone followed by Taxotere in men with HRPC.

When men progress to a hormone-resistant condition, the chemotherapy agents Novantrone and Taxotere are available as treatment options. However, it has not been determined if treatment with Taxotere first followed by Novantrone, or treatment with Novantrone first followed by Taxotere at signs of a cancer recurrence provides more favorable outcomes. Researchers from Canada recently reviewed data to evaluate whether the sequence of these chemotherapy agents affects outcomes for men with HRPC.

The study included 68 men with HRPC who were treated either with Taxotere followed by Novantrone, or the reverse sequence. Men initially treated with Taxotere had favorable outcomes compared to those who were initially treated with Novantrone:

  • Median overall survival was 22 months for men treated with Taxotere first and 15 months for those treated with Novantrone first.
  • Progression-free survival was 2-3 months for both groups.
  • Both agents, when used as the second agent, resulted in high rates of side effects that affected doses or prompted discontinuation of therapy .

Feeling Or Being Sick

Feeling or being sick is usually well controlled with anti sickness medicines. Avoiding fatty or fried foods, eating small meals and snacks, drinking plenty of water, and relaxation techniques can all help.

It is important to take anti sickness medicines as prescribed even if you dont feel sick. It is easier to prevent sickness rather than treating it once it has started.

What Is Docetaxel Chemotherapy

Docetaxel, a drug Sanofi markets as Taxotere, is an FDA-approved chemotherapy drug used to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer, and stomach cancer, among others. Unfortunately, at least 8,000 people and counting are pursuing a class-action lawsuit against manufacturer Sanofi for ignoring and downplaying serious adverse effects. Heres more about how Taxotere is intended to work against prostate cancer and how it negatively affects patients.

Changes in heart rate and blood pressure

Docetaxel can alter your heart rate and affect blood pressure so you will be carefully monitored for this during your treatment. Changes to your heart rate and blood pressure can usually be treated easily and you will not have to stop your treatment. This is not the same as having an allergic reaction to docetaxel .

Effects on the lungs

This may include scarring or inflammation of the lung tissue. This is a rare side effect, but if you become breathless or develop a dry cough during or in the few weeks after your treatment, let your treatment team know.

How Is Docetaxel Given

Docetaxel is given into a vein . This will usually be as a drip, also called an infusion, into the hand or arm.

Other intravenous methods may be used depending on factors such as how easy it is for chemotherapy staff to find suitable veins, and your preferences.

Docetaxel is normally given once every three weeks, over about one hour. This is known as a cycle.

The interval between each treatment gives your body time to recover. This may vary depending on whether between each cycle.

You will have docetaxel as an outpatient.

Before each cycle you will be given medication to reduce the chances of .

Is Taxotere Lawsuit A Class Action Lawsuit Or Mass Tort Lawsuit

Due to the huge number of claimants against Sanofi, the Taxotere lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation. This is designed to speed up the process in the courts, allowing judges to hear broader evidence and arguments rather than a separate hearing for each individual case. MDLs are a type of mass tort, so the Taxotere lawsuit is not a class action. The latter is usually reserved for mass consumer cases, usually due to a defective product, with compensation shared equally among claimants. While class actions and mass tort cases share some qualities, it is important to note that each claim is judged on its own merit in mass tort. So, in your claim against Sanofi, your compensation would depend on the level of injury caused by Taxotere and personal circumstances.

Endocrine Drugs For Prostate Cancer

Drugs work as well as prostate cancer surgery to reduce the level of hormones in the body. Most men opt for drug therapy rather than surgery. The three types of hormone-related drugs approved to treat advanced prostate cancer include luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs, luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone antagonists, and antiandrogens.

Does Taxotere Cause Side Effects

Taxotere is an antineoplastic drug used primarily for treating breast cancer. Taxotere is also a second-line treatment for patients with

Taxotere works by attacking cancer cells. Every cell in the body contains a supporting structure called the microtubular network. If this “skeleton” is changed or damaged, the cell can’t grow or reproduce. Taxotere makes the “skeleton” in cancer cells unnaturally stiff, so that these cells can no longer grow.

Common side effects of Taxotere include

  • changes in sense of taste,
  • changes in fingernails or toenails,
  • swelling of hands/face/feet,
  • excess tearing,
  • skin reactions at the administration site , and
  • tissue damage if Taxotere leaks out of the vein into the tissues.

Serious side effects of Taxotere include

Drug interactions of Taxotere include drugs that reduce the activity of liver enzymes that break down Taxotere and other drugs increase the blood levels of Taxotere and increase its side effects such as ketoconazole, erythromycin, and protease inhibitors.

Taxotere can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. Women of childbearing potential should use an adequate form of contraception and should be advised not to become pregnant during therapy with Taxotere.

Dealing With Taxotere Side Effects

Marina del Rey, CA | Edited from PCRI Insights May, 2007 vol. 10, no.2

Overall, Taxotere® is well tolerated. However, successful administration of this powerful medicine requires diligent surveillance so that potential complications can be detected and corrected before they become severe.

Introduction

Taxotere® is the most active chemotherapy for prostate cancer. In 2004, two randomized prospective studies1,2 comparing Taxotere and mitoxantrone, an older chemotherapy agent, clearly demonstrated that Taxotere was superior in three important criteria: overall survival duration, pain control, and quality of life. As a result, the FDA promptly approved Taxotere for the treatment of metastatic hormone refractory prostate cancer.

Taxotere in Early Disease

Besides its proven activity in metastatic disease, Taxotere is also being studied3 in the preventative, or adjuvant, setting. Effective treatment against advanced cancer works even better against earlier stages of the same type of cancer. Patients with high-grade prostate cancer may already harbor microscopic metastases. Intuitively, if one wants to improve the cure rate, one must also treat the microscopic disease outside the prostate. To date, the main adjuvant therapy for prostate cancer is hormone blockade.
