Mission Statement
The New Jersey Prostate Cancer Research Fund supports innovative research focusing on the causes, prevention, screening, treatment and cure of prostate cancer.
- On January 2, 2002, New Jersey enacted Assembly bill A2633, establishing the New Jersey Prostate Cancer Research Fund.
- Make donations to the New Jersey Prostate Cancer Research Fund through a check-off box on your state income tax form and through Epay.
- Donations support prostate cancer research projects, training fellowships, and educational conferences.
- The Commission administers the Fund at no additional cost to the State.
- Grants are awarded through a competitive scientific peer review process.
- Research projects focus on the causes, prevention, screening, treatment or cure of prostate cancer and may include, but are not limited to, basic behavioral, clinical, demographic, epidemiological, and psychosocial research .
- Grants assist researchers in obtaining additional funding from the federal government, foundations and private sources.
- On average, for every dollar the NJCCR awards, more than ten dollars are returned to the state for continued research.
Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer
Race, age and family history all affect the likelihood of a man being diagnosed with the disease.
African American men are 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer compared with Caucasian and Hispanic men and nearly 2.5 times more likely to die from the disease.
As men increase in age, their risk of developing prostate cancer exponentially increases. Although only 1 in 10,000 under age 40 will be diagnosed, the rate increases to 6 in 10 for ages 65 and older.
Men with a single first-degree relativefather, brother, or sonwith a history of prostate cancer are twice as likely to develop the disease, while those with two or more relatives are nearly four times as likely to bediagnosed.

How Prostate Cancer Is Diagnosed
The experienced urologists and surgeons at Philadelphias Jefferson Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Center and Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Jefferson Health work as a team to confirm a prostate cancer diagnosis. Our thorough examination begins with a discussion about your symptoms and a review of your medical history.
Jeffersons experts will conduct a series of physical exams to feel for prostate gland abnormalities. Because prostate cancer is so common, the potential impact of each innovation by physicians and researchers has the power to benefit many men and their families. Over the last decade, advancements have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer that are saving more lives.
Detection: Improvements in biopsy techniques, such as magnetic resonance guided biopsies, have allowed cancers to be more reliably detected. Development of tests that look at the gene profile of prostate cancer cells can help determine the best treatment course for men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer. Advancements in imaging are paving the way to more clearly identifying sites of recurrence, so that more optimal localized therapy can be delivered even in patients whose disease is no longer localized to the prostate.

New Brunswick, N.J., November 6, 2020 Al Roker, longtime television personality and current weather anchor on NBCs Today Show, announced today that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is marked by an uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate gland. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men other than skin cancer. About 191,930 new cases of prostate cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year with about 33,330 deaths from this disease. In the state of New Jersey, the estimated number of new cases this year is about 6,010 with around 810 deaths. It is estimated that about one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
While the exact cause of prostate cancer may not be known, a mans risk is higher if a man is over the age of 50 and if an immediate blood relative has had prostate cancer. Additionally, race is a factor as the disease is more common in African American men than white men.
