The GreenLight XPS system has a feature called pulse coagulation, which reduces the risk of blood loss. The pulses of energy cause the blood vessels in the surgical area to coagulate, or solidify. By providing pulsed, rather than a constant flow of energy, the XPS system allows tissue to quickly cool down and coagulate, preventing blood loss. The principle behind GreenLight laser has always been using high-powered energy beams to vaporise excess tissue and coagulate blood vessels to minimise bleeding, explains Alan Doherty, Consultant Urologist of Birmingham Prostate Clinic.

The XPS system allows us to do both of these things far more efficiently. We have greater power, which is particularly important with larger prostates. We also have pulsed coagulation which means we can minimise bleeding in the most safe and effective way possible, said Mr Doherty, who is one of the most experienced surgeons using GreenLight laser in the UK.

What Does The Greenlight Laser Therapy Procedure Involve

Dr. Dhir controls the direction and delivery of the laser energy through the flexible fiber tube, under the guidance of real-time imaging. Laser energy is delivered as small bursts, lasting for a few seconds, to vaporize the prostate tissue. A continuous flow of irrigation fluid is maintained to remove the cut prostate tissue, keep the fiber tip cool and to maintain a clear view of the operative area.

The cystoscope with the fiber is slowly manipulated through the urethra, removing the obstructing prostate tissue thereby enlarging the space within the urethra and restoring normal urine flow. At the end of the procedure, a catheter is placed in the bladder and is usually removed the next day after surgery. Patients are usually discharged on the same day of the procedure but may be kept overnight and discharged the next day.

Enlarged Prostate Laser Surgery: Recovery Side Effects And Natural Treatment

Prostate enlargement is a common feature in males over fifty years of age. Prostate is a gland at the base of the urinary bladder and around the urethra. It is in a size of large chest-nut. Most common enlargement of prostate is benign enlargement of prostate. It is non-cancerous and usually causes obstruction of urine outflow, increase in frequency of urination especially in night and dull pain below umbilical region. Cancerous enlargement is dangerous and can spread to surrounding organs.Enlargement can be due to exposure to cold and chill, infectious diseases, excessive sexual excitement, constipation etc. Prostate problems affect many men, especially those in their senior years.

The laser procedure has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Still, in most cases, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This is especially true if the procedure is done by a trained and licensed medical professional using FDA approved laser equipment.

Laser surgery is minimally invasive thus the chances of bleeding are minimal. This means that the procedure can also be done on those who are taking blood thinners and those who have bleeding disorders. Laser surgery can correct an enlarged prostate.

Creating A New Standard Of Care

The GreenLight Laser Therapy is a procedure that combines the effectiveness of the traditional surgical procedure known as Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate with fewer side effects.1

GreenLight uses laser energy to remove enlarged prostate tissue. This results in an open channel for urine flow through, but with less risks of sexual and other side-effects common with TURP. Most patients return home a few short hours after the PVP procedure and can return to normal, non-strenuous activities within days. The GreenLight laser system delivers the ultimate BPH solution free from urinary symptoms, free from compromise, free to go!

What Is The Recovery Time

After the GreenLight procedure, you will want to take it easy for the rest of the day. Some mild side effects can include nausea or constipation, so patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids and try to stick to soups and liquid meals for a day or two if either of these issues is present.

You will have a catheter in for several days, which will require some care. Additional common side effects include some light blood in the urine or pink-tinged urine as well as frequent urination and a burning sensation during urination. These issues should resolve themselves within a few days to weeks.

We recommend that patients wait to resume normal physical activity for 1 week after GreenLight Laser Therapy, and then to start slowly, with walks instead of runs, for instance. We do not recommend any heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. We also strongly recommend patients do not have sexual intercourse for at least 1 to 2 weeks post-procedure.

Within 4 to 6 weeks, the inflammation from the prostates healing process should subside and side effects should be gone.

Impotence After Prostate Surgery

In the past, up to 70 per cent of men who had their whole prostate removed because of cancer had some difficulty achieving an erection afterwards. This is because the prostate lies next to the nerves and blood vessels that are important for erections, and these nerves and vessels can be damaged during the operation. Newer surgical techniques that aim to spare the nerves associated with erectile function have reduced the risk of impotence.

While there is a still a significant risk of erectile dysfunction after prostate surgery, there is often a gradual improvement in erectile function over time. Some men only have short-lived erectile dysfunction and others continue to improve for up to 3 years.

A enlarged prostate can also cause blockages in the urethra. A blocked urethra can also damage the kidneys. A patient suffering from an enlargement of the prostate may have pain in his lower abdomen and genitals. If pain is present, a digital rectal examination will reveal hard areas. A doctor may prescribe surgery or perform an endoscopic procedure. If the enlarged prostate is not completely removed, it will shrink.

While the size of an enlarged prostate will influence the extent of urinary symptoms, men may experience a range of urinary symptoms. Some men have minimal or no symptoms at all. Some men will have a very enlarged prostate, whereas others will have a mild enlargement. Generally, the symptoms can stabilize over time. Some men may have an enlarged prostate but not notice it. If they have an enlarged colon, their physician can perform a TURP procedure.

Why Is Green Light Laser Prostate Surgery Performed

Green light laser surgery is performed for the purposes of treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia . Benign Prostate Hyperplasia , also known as enlarged prostate, is quite common among older men. The symptoms of an enlarged prostate include frequent need to urinate, increased frequency of urination during the night, difficulty to start urinating, weak urine stream that stops and starts, etc. The symptoms usually start off in a more mild form but tend to get worse over time.

Green light laser surgery for prostate is one of the newest, minimally invasive treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The green light laser beam is used to vaporize the obstructing inner part of the prostate gland itself that is causing the urinary symptoms that are reducing the quality of life of the patient. No cuts are made as a part of the surgery.

What Happens During The Procedure

You usually have a general anaesthetic for this procedure. If you have other long-term medical conditions, such as problems with your heart or breathing, we may recommend you have a spinal anaesthetic instead with some sedation to make you comfortable. This means you have no feeling of pain from the waist down during the operation. If this applies to you the anaesthetist will let you know.Once you are in the operating theatre: We will pass a telescopic instrument called a cystoscope into your urethra and up into your bladder to examine it. The cystoscope is 2-3 millimetres thicker than the thickness of a pencil and has a tiny video camera on one end, so we can view images of your urethra and bladder on a television screen We will vaporise the prostate tissue through the cystoscope using a high-powered laser. We will place a catheter in your urethra and bladder to drain urine for the first 12 to 24 hours after your procedure. This is because things can be sore and swollen and the bladder can often seize up if we did not place a catheter.

What Are The Risks Of An Anaesthetic

Straight after a general anaesthetic you may feel tired, dizzy or weak. You must have someone to collect you and stay with you for the first 24 hours. During the first 24 hours you should not: drive or operate any motorised vehicle or electrical equipment sign any legal documents or make important decisions drink alcohol.

You may feel weak or dizzy at times during the first 7 10 days. If this happens, sit down until the feeling passes. You may also have the post-operative blues and feel a little depressed. If any of these symptoms do not go away, please contact you GP for help and advice. Rarely, a clot can form in the leg which can result in a clot in the lungs. We cannot give you blood thinning medication because of the risk of bleeding caused by these types of medication after a PVP operation. Chest infections can sometimes also occur and these will need antibiotics. The risk of mortality after a general anaesthetic or an operation like this is extremely rare.

What To Know About Bph

BPH Laser Surgery

BPH describes theenlargement of the prostate gland that sits beneath your bladder. This enlargement is common in men as they get older.

The urethra, the tube that channels urine from your bladder and out of your body, passes through the center of the prostate. When the prostate becomes swollen or enlarged, it can press on the urethra and block the flow of urine.

This pressure can lead to persistent discomfort and symptoms like:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Sudden or frequent urge to urinate
  • Frequent urinary tract infections

You might also notice you have to urinate more often during the night.

In addition to aging, BPH can be the result of diabetes, heart disease, or obesity. If you have a family history of BPH, you might be at increased risk for having the condition, too.

Other benefits of GreenLight laser therapy include:

  • Quick restoration of urine flow

To find out if youre a candidate for GreenLight laser therapy, or book a consultation online today.

What Are The Risks Of Greenlight Therapy

The Greenlight technique uses an energy beam delivered through a thin laser fiber to safely and precisely vaporize surface tissue.

Short-term studies show that it has fewer side-effects compared to TURP. However, there are risks associated with any surgical procedure.

There is a risk of reoperation after Greenlight therapy . It can cause bladder neck contracture that requires surgical intervention to correct.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of long-term studies evaluating its safety beyond 10-years after surgery. Further safety and efficacy studies are needed to address the cause of reoperation adequately.

Patient Expectations After Greenlight Laser For Enlarged Prostate

Immediately following a minimally invasive GreenLight Laser procedure, patients will have a catheter in place to drain the bladder. Patients are discharged to home following the procedure and then can follow up in the office in 1-3 days to have the catheter removed. The length of time with the catheter following the procedure is typically dictated by the size of the prostate, with extremely large prostates requiring longer postoperative catheter times.

After the catheter is removed, patients should immediately notice that the strength of their urinary stream is improved given their more open prostate channel as demonstrated in the images below. Patients, however, will commonly experience mild burning with urination and frequency that may last several days. Soon after the GreenLight Laser procedure patients will begin to notice a decrease in urinary frequency and need to wake up at night to urinate as the bladder begins to relax and accommodate to a more open prostate channel without obstruction.

Relieve Enlarged Prostate Symptoms In A Single Visit

GreenLight Laser Therapy is a minimally invasive surgical option for BPH that combines the effectiveness of the traditional surgical procedure known as transurethral resection of the prostate , but with fewer side effects, shorter catheterization and quicker, less painful recovery times.

GreenLight uses laser energy to remove enlarged prostate tissue, resulting in an open channel for urine flow-through and a quick return to a life thats free of BPH symptoms.

GreenLight Laser Therapy is typically an outpatient procedure meaning you can return home hours after the procedure, and can return to normal, non-strenuous activities within days. The GreenLight Laser system delivers the ultimate in BPH treatment freedom from urinary symptoms, freedom from compromise, freedom to live life the way you choose.

I Had Laser Prostate surgery on Dec 13 and the first week was pretty rough. Pain, nausea, vomiting and could not pee at all after the catheter was removed the first time Had to get another cath in for a couple of days. Had burning pain for 17 days. The first day i could pee, I went 17 times in 18 hours. I still have frequency, but every day is better now. Almost no pain or burning. I think everyone’s experience is different. They say it will get better in time. Hope this helps. Had no problem getting back night/morning erections. Even got one with the catheter in. That was rather bizarre. That can be a side effect: Impotence.

PVP two years ago. Outpatient. Excellent results. Quite painless, some blood in urine for a few days as expected. No catheters or Foley bags for me for the last two years. Normal urination for TWO years and counting. Considering how many posts are showing depressingly negative results, I hesitate to post one so positive since it might result in more folks having negative post op experience. Depends on the surgeon, I suppose.
