Safe And Effective Prostate Cancer Treatment

Not only has the FDA-cleared the CyberKnife System, It has been used successfully to treat conditions throughout the body, including prostate tumors, but it is one of the safest cancer treatment options currently available. Despite its name , it doesnt involve any invasive surgical incisions, so the procedure is pain-free.

Plus, unlike conventional radiation therapy, CyberKnife has minimal if any side effects. Typically, treatments are completed in just one to five sessions as opposed to the numerous treatments over many weeks and months as required with conventional radiation therapy. In addition, there is no recovery time required, so you can immediately return to your normal activities once the treatment session is over.

Role In Treating Lesions/tumours Of The Spine

Nearly 9 studies2125 have evaluated the role of Cyberknife in spinal lesions. Conclusions are hard to derive as the subjects are highly hetereogenous in the type of spinal lesions involved . As a primary treatment Cyberknife can achieve a local control of nearly 90% in patients with a median follow up of 18 months. Radicular pain has been relieved in 2585% of patients and neurological deficits improved to a lesser degree. Several large studies have analyzed the planning constraints in the treatment of spinal lesions. They have inferred that a constraint of 10 Gy to less than 10% of contoured spinal cord is safe. Currently available data suggest that a higher maximal dose of 20 Gy is also safe and feasible. This makes a very good option for patients with previously irradiated spine and metastatic disease.

The Cyberknife Systems Advanced Robotics

The CyberKnife System is manufactured by Accuray, a company that appears in the Top 10 on Fast Companys list of most innovative robotic companies.

It works by using an image-guided linear accelerator that is mounted onto a robotic arm. The accelerator transmits stereotactic radiation from hundreds of different angles to ensure maximum effect on the malignant tissue.

The robotic arm is not fixed in any one position, but rather it is able to move around and adjust to any angle that is needed. With this range of motion, the CyberKnife System is able to avoid healthy tissue and conform its transmitted radiation to the exact shape of the patients prostate tumor.

Why Is The Cyberknife Good For Prostate Patients

  • Compensation for movement. The body doesn’t stop moving during treatment and this movement in the past has been a challenge for doctors. With the CyberKnife, a special gold fiducial is placed in the prostate so the radiation beam can robotically follow the prostates movements.
  • Reduced treatment time. The entire course of treatment for the CyberKnife is five sessions. Traditional radiation treatments can take as many as 40 to 45 sessions during an eight- or nine-week span.
  • Non-invasive procedure. For patients who are good candidates, no surgery is required. The patient lies comfortably while the robot moves automatically in nearly every direction around the body to deliver the prescribed treatment dose.
  • CyberKnife treatment for prostate cancer is completely pain free.
  • It is effective. 93 percent of CyberKnife patients are disease free five years later.

How Does It Work

Prior to treatment, patients are scheduled for a short outpatient procedure in which three to four-five tiny gold seeds are inserted into the prostate. The fiducials guide the CyberKnife System to track the tumor during the treatment process. The following week, the patient will also have a planning session and MRI for treatment planning.

During the treatment, the patient wears comfortable clothing and will lie on the treatment table as the CyberKnifes computer-controlled robotic arm moves quietly around the patient, delivering radiation directly to the tumor. The procedure is done in a series of five or fewer outpatient visits. It is painless and does not require sedation. The patient is able to communicate and be seen by the technologists during the entire procedure.

After treatment is complete, most patients immediately return to their normal activities.

Prostate Cancer Risk Factors

There are only a few risk factors that might increase a mans risk of getting prostate cancer. There are many more factors that researchers think MAY have an impact, while there are others where there is no evidence linking them to prostate cancer. Having one or more risk factors doesnt mean youre going to get cancer.

What Are The Side Effects To Cyberknife Prostate Cancer Treatment

Home

CyberKnife SBRT utilizes a higher dose rate than traditional radiation, however, according to an 864-patient study published in 2013, it was shown that SBRT side effects are no worse than side effects experienced with traditional radiation.

The study found that a transient and modest decline in urinary and bowel QOL during the first few months quickly recovers to baseline levels. In fact, most patients resume normal activity immediately after treatment sessions. With that being said, possible complications that accompany any radiation therapy treatment are: urinary incontinence, bowel issues, and erectile dysfunction.

Side Effects Of Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy to the prostate can cause some side effects, such as loose or watery poo and passing urine more often.

Side effects tend to start a week or 2 after the radiotherapy begins. They gradually get worse during the treatment and for a couple of weeks after the treatment ends. But they usually begin to improve after around 2 weeks or so after treatment finishes

Everyone is different and the side effects vary from person to person. You may not have all of the effects mentioned.

What Does Cyberknife Treatment Involve For A Patient

Implanting gold markers

The first step is to implant what is known as Fiducial markers into your prostate. These markers are made of gold and are the size of a grain of rice. They are implanted using a needle under ultrasound guidance via the perineum or rectum. You may experience a little discomfort, but this is normally mild. There follows a wait of seven to ten days for any minor swelling to settle down and any movement to settle.

Pre-treatment planning

Before your treatment, you will have a CT and MRI scan. CT scans are always used for radiotherapy planning and this is combined with MRI, because MRI provides a better definition of the outline of the prostate. The two are then fused together, along with the location of the markers which have been implanted into your prostate. The markers work on the same principle as the lock on process used by airline pilots to ensure they are following a route. X-rays taken every 15 seconds during treatment will check whether the actual location of the gold markers matches their location in your pre-treatment treatment mapping. So any changes, even very small ones, are quickly identified and if there is movement, the robot will stop treatment and correct for the movement.

You can eat various types of other meats. I suggest to eat chicken, turkey,& lots of fish. I buy all natural chicken, all natural turkey,& wild caught & fresh fish.

I eat as much as I want of these type meats. I never thought Id like grounded turkey. I can honestly say that a turkey burger is much better than any hamburger I ever ate. I wouldnt have thought so but it honestly is a better taste & health option.

I eat all the chicken I want. I suggest you to bake it & not fry it in oils. If you do fry then please use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I add Mrs. Dash seasonings to all my meats. This is an all natural source for seasonings. There are many different flavors by Mrs Dash.

I also eat all the fish I want. I suggest eating salmon, flounder, tilapia, pollack, catfish, trout,& many other fish. Try to eat the oily type fish. Salmon & trout are two of the top oily fish on the market. Here too I suggest baking instead of frying.

Now, I want to move onto another area of the diet. I will be discussing the importance 0f fruits & vegetables. Fruits was definitely a foreign word to me before prostate problems. I did eat limited amounts of veggies but not enough. I made that change as well in my life. Its very important to eat fruits & veggies to have a healthy diet. Efficacy In Pancreatic Tumours

Radiation can play an important role in palliation of pancreatic carcinoma or even prophylactic palliation of local regression, biliary obstruction, and splanchnic nerve pain. Stereotactic body radiotherapy has the advantage of improved local control and is more patient friendly in terms of shorter treatment time, faster palliation and better normal tissue sparing. Two Phase II studies by Aarhus University18 and Stanford University19 show conflicting reports regarding toxicity. Surprisingly, the Stanford protocol with single fraction treatment has lesser toxicity than the Aarhus protocol of 45 Gy in 5 fractions. The disparity only highlights the multitude of variables that may have to be taken into account when designing a stereotactic radiotherapy treatment protocol. Carcinoma Pancreas Phase II studies suggest a dose escalation advantage with doses of 25 Gy achieving 85% local control vs. 66% for 20 Gy and 70% for 15 Gy.20

How Is The Cyberknife System Different From Other Stereotactic Radiosurgery Systems

The CyberKnife system uses the combination of a robotics and image guidance to deliver concentrated and accurate beams of radiation to intracranial and extracranial targets, many of which are inoperable with sub- millimeter accuracy. The robotic arm is highly flexible, allowing access to tumors in difficult-to-reach locations.

The CyberKnife, unlike other stereotactic radiosurgery systems, is able to locate and track the position of the tumor without the use of an invasive stereotactic head frame or stereotactic body frame. The system compensates for the patients respirations and movement during treatment, constantly ensuring accurate targeting for the delivery of radiation beams.
