Frequent Sex And Masturbation In 20s And 30s Linked To Higher Prostate Cancer But Risks Diminish With Age

Date:
Wiley â Blackwell
Summary:

However the UK research team also found that frequent sexual activity in a mans forties appears to have little effect and even small levels of activity in a mans fifties could offer protection from the disease. Most of the differences were attributed to masturbation rather than sexual intercourse.

The study, led by the University of Nottingham, looked at the sexual practices of more than 431 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 60, together with 409 controls.

Men who took part in the study were asked about all aspects of their sex life from their twenties onwards, including how old they were when they became sexually active, how often they masturbated and had intercourse, how many sexual partners they had had and whether they had had any sexually transmitted diseases.

We were keen to look at the links between sexual activity and younger men as a lot of prostate cancer studies focus on older men as the disease is more prevalent in men over 50 says lead author Dr Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, who is now at the University of Cambridge.

Masturbating May Protect Against Prostate Cancer

By Douglas Fox

It will make you go blind. It will make your palms grow hairy. Such myths about masturbation are largely a thing of the past. But the latest research has even better news for young men& colon frequent self-pleasuring could protect against the most common kind of cancer.

The protective effect is greatest while men are in their twenties& colon those who had ejaculated more than five times per week in their twenties, for instance, were one-third less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer later in life .

The results contradict those of previous studies, which have suggested that having had many sexual partners, or a high frequency of sexual activity, increases the risk of prostate cancer by up to 40 per cent. The key difference is that these earlier studies defined sexual activity as sexual intercourse, whereas the latest study focused on the number of ejaculations, whether or not intercourse was involved.

The team speculates that infections caused by intercourse may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Had we been able to remove ejaculations associated with sexual intercourse, there should have been an even stronger protective effect of other ejaculations, they suggest. Men have many ways of using their prostate which do not involve women or other men, Giles adds.

How Common Is Prostate Cancer In Young Men

Natural Supplements For Enlarged Prostate

Common estimates suggest that early-onset prostate cancer comprises roughly 10 percent of all prostate cancer occurrences. As mentioned previously, the number of cases of early-onset prostate cancer is increasing, and has increased roughly six-fold from 5.6 to over 30 cases per 100,000 person-years since 1986. Additionally, and the same as with all prostate cancer diagnoses, the largest proportion of those diagnosed are African American males.1,2

Does Having More Ejaculations Lessen The Chance Of Prostate Cancer

For reasons not fully known, ejaculating more may lower the risk of prostate cancer.

Ejaculating after all, based upon some studies, through sexual intercourse or masturbation, does not seem to protect against higher risk prostate cancers. The studies do not sort out between ejaculating during sexual intercourse or masturbation, and the effect of each on prostate cancer.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

In addition to adopting a healthy lifestyle, using medications called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors have been shown to reduce prostate cancer risk, although this hasnt been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration .

Symptoms Of Prostatitis Can Include:

Warning Signs of Prostate Cancer
  • needing to pee urgently, often in the middle of the night
  • blood in your urine
  • a feeling of heaviness behind your scrotum
  • a urinary blockage, which means you cant pee when you need to.

There are different types of prostatitis. Bacterial prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection, and can be treated with antibiotics. Then theres chronic prostatitis, or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Doctors dont know yet what causes this condition, but it can be trigged by things like an injury, nerve damage or stress.

Is There A Link Between Masturbation And Prostate Cancer

In 30 seconds

Its not just masturbating that might help.

However, other studies have suggested that things arent so clear-cut. Frequent masturbation appears to have different effects on prostate cancer risk at different ages. Meanwhile, your risk is affected by your genes, your diet, and your age too.

Science doesnt know for certain what causes prostate cancer. While its known that things like genetics and diet play a role, researchers are always looking for new clues to lead them to a more concrete explanation.

However, things are not yet certain. In this article, were going to look at the evidence for the potential link between masturbation and prostate cancer and explore some other causes of the illness too.

Causes Of Sexual Problems

While many men experience sexual issues following prostate cancer treatment, these issues are not often due to prostate cancer itself.

Most prostate cancer symptoms involve problems with expelling urine due to enlargement of the prostate gland. This enlargement begins to inhibit the urethra carrying urine out of the body. Urinary symptoms should not affect a persons sex life, however.

More active treatments for cancer, such as surgery, radiation therapy, or hormone therapy, may lead to sexual dysfunction.

Nerves that run close to the prostate gland control erections. Surgery that completely removes the prostate gland carries a risk of erectile dysfunction for this reason.

This type of surgery is usually only suitable for men with aggressive prostate cancer that is likely to grow or spread. Younger men with prostate cancer might also choose it, however.

In these surgical cases, a nerve-sparing prostatectomy aims to avoid damage to the erection-controlling nerves. Nevertheless, nerve-sparing operations are not always possible.

While reducing the risk of erectile dysfunction, this type of treatment may not deal with the cancer fully and may leave behind some cancerous tissue.

Surgery carries the greatest risk, but other treatment methods for prostate cancer can also affect sexual activity.

Treatment options with a risk of erectile dysfunction include:

Brachytherapy has a lower risk of erectile dysfunction than other types of radiation therapy.

Sexual Intercourse Not Masturbation Could Help Prevent Prostate Cancer Expert

Kindly share this story:

A sexual health expert, Omolola Adefuye, says men engaging in masturbation with the hope that ejaculating through it can help prevent prostate cancer should stop it, noting that there is no scientific evidence to back their assumption.

On the prevalence of masturbation, a 2011 survey carried out in America, showed that across age groups, more males reported masturbation than females .

Among males, masturbation occurrence increased with age: at age 14 years, 62.6% of males reported at least 1 prior occurrence, whereas 80% of 17-year-old males reported having masturbated, the survey stated.

However, there has over the years been a growing debate on the connection between masturbation and prostate health.

For example, a 2016 study involving almost 32,000 men who were reportedly tracked for 18 years suggested that there could be a connection.

The researchers found that guys who did it the most had about a 20% lower chance of prostate cancer, compared with those who did it less . That was true in several age groups, WebMD, a health portal stated, referencing the study.

However, speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, Adefuye acknowledged the research works but explained that the case of masturbation might be different.

She also stated that in most cases, prostate cancer is hereditary.

Soreness In The Groin

How Do They Check Prostate

When prostate cancer spreads, its common for cancer cells to go to your lymph nodes and then move to more areas of your body. The lymph nodes are a network of glands that help your body filter fluids and fight infections.

There are several lymph nodes in your groin. These are the ones closest to your prostate, so its common for the cancer to spread to them first. Cancer cells prevent your lymph nodes from draining fluid and working properly. When this happens, your lymph nodes swell. As a result, you might experience pain or soreness in the area.

Masturbation May Increase Risk Of Prostate Cancer

ByLive Science Staff26 January 2009

Editorâs Note:This story was revised Jan. 28, 2008 after an email interview with the studyâs lead author Polyxeni Dimitropoulou to address concerns that this research produced markedly different results than some previous studies on the topic.

The message, perhaps: Hold off until middle age.

The study also found that frequent sexual activity in a manâs 40s appears to have little effect and even small levels of sexual activity in a manâs 50s could offer protection from the disease. Most of the differences were attributed to masturbation rather than sexual intercourse.

However, some previous studies had generated much different findings. The bottom line: More study is needed to settle this one.

The study, led by the University of Nottingham, looked at the sexual practices of more than 431 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 60, together with 409 controls who do not have prostate cancer.

Among men with prostate cancer, 34 percent had masturbated frequently in their 20s, compared to 24 percent among the control group. A similar spread was found for men in their 30s.

The results, based on questionnaires, are detailed in the journal BJU International .

Prostate Cancer Diagnoses And Treatment

Recognizing Prostatitis vs Prostate Cancer | Ask a Prostate Expert, Mark Scholz, MD

All cancer is complex, but prostate cancer testing and treatment is particularly complicated.

In some men with prostate cancer, the cancer will grow very slowly, and wont significantly affect them during their lifetime. Other mens prostate cancer can grow and spread very quickly. At the moment, there is no test that can tell what type of prostate cancer a man has when he is diagnosed.

Because some treatments for prostate cancer can cause side effects which might impact on quality of life, its important for men to discuss with their doctor all their options for testing and treatment, and to discuss these with their partners and families. These might include watchful waiting, which means waiting to see what the cancer does over time, radiation, surgery or taking medications.

You can read more about what kinds of questions to ask your doctors about prostate cancer testing and treatment on the Cancer Council website.

How Does Obesity Work

Currently, over 30% of American men are obese based on a body mass index of > 30, about two decades past, this figure was two times less.Usually, you have an excessive body mass, not because of muscles but fat. Fat or how it called adipose tissue consists mostly of lipid-rich cells which are the energy storage of the body. It has been shown both on humans and animals that adipose tissue is a site where the high activity of enzyme aromatase is observed. Aromatase converts testosterone a male hormone produced in the testicles and making you masculine, into estrogen, or the most common form of estrogen estradiol. Although E2 is called a female sex hormone, it plays a crucial role in multiple functions, including reproductive, in mens bodies as well. And it works perfectly as long as you did not gain extra weight. Obese men have more aromatase activity than normal, more T irreversibly converts into E2 disrupting their balance. Males with increasing obesity have on average twofold higher estrogen levels in both systemic circulation and locally in the prostate. And of course, these hormonal changes not only make a man more feminine affecting his body shape, sexual sphere, and even his social behavior but have a significant influence on prostate health as well.

BMI > 30 has been found to correlate with higher prostate weight, prostate-specific antigen , and more aggressive prostate cancer . BMI thus is an additional risk factor besides PSA.

How Does Obesity Affect Bph

The results of all studies agree on one thing: obese men have a higher risk for benign prostatic hyperplasia and worsened urinary symptoms. . The greater the size of WC the larger the volume of the prostate and higher the values of prostate-specific antigen and International Prostate Symptom Score. All this shows the worsened lower urinary tract symptoms in obese men. .

Several mechanisms may help to link obesity and BPH. They all work together, contributing to the worsening of the BPH symptoms independently of each other.

  • Visceral obesity may increase intra-abdominal pressure and bladder pressure, which in turn aggravate lower urinary tract symptoms related to BPH.
  • Hormonal imbalance is another mechanism connecting obesity to BPH. Due to the high activity of the aromatase gene in adipose tissues and progressive conversion of testosterone to estradiol and androstenedione to estrone the ratio of estrogens to androgens increases. Besides, an increased estradiol production may suppress the Hypothalamicpituitary-gonadal axis and result in a further decline in the T levels and the development of hypogonadism thus favorable in the development of BPH. .

    Prostate Specific Antigen Testing

Prostate Specific Antigen is a protein made by the cells in your prostate. Your PSA levels can be measured using a blood test and give an indication of your prostate health.

A PSA test isnt a test for cancer. Higher levels of PSA might indicate prostate cancer, but a high reading could also be caused by other conditions. It is also possible to have low level readings and have prostate cancer. This means that a PSA test isnt enough to definitively diagnose or rule out prostate cancer. Your PSA levels can vary, so your doctor might run this test a few times to compare your results and help determine your risk of prostate cancer.

Bowel Dysfunction After Prostate Cancer Treatment

How Long For Prostate Biopsy Results

The broad term of bowel dysfunction includes:

    • Diarrhea or frequent stools

    • Fecal incontinence or the inability to control bowel movements

    • Rectal bleeding

All of these side effects are far more common following external beam radiotherapy than any other primary therapy, but as techniques and dose planning strategies improve, even these rates have been dropping.
