Other Ways To Support Prostate Health

Lifestyle habits that promote prostate health include:

Exercise. Aim to get 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. If youre new to fitness or havent worked out in a while, start slowly and work your way up to more intense exercises if your body allows.

Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight is a risk factor for prostate disease.

Regular doctor appointments. Scheduling routine wellness exams and prostate screenings with your healthcare provider is an excellent way to detect and treat any potential prostate issues early.

Stress reduction. Chronic stress can have a major impact on prostate health. Finding ways to relieve stress can help prevent prostate problems and reduce symptoms of existing prostate disease. Breathwork, meditation, exercise and seeking emotional support from others may be effective stress-reduction techniques.

Eating a prostate-friendly diet can go a long way in keeping your prostate healthy. While some things, like genetic predisposition to prostate-related illnesses are out of your control, making healthy lifestyle choices can lower your risk for prostate disease and improve your overall health and well-being.

This Study Is Nuts Are Walnuts The Key To Prostate Health

By Susan WhitePosted April 3, 2017

Prostate cancer is every mans worst nightmare.

The second youre diagnosed theres a team of doctors and surgeons ready to cut open your most precious cargo.

And the surgery, alone, can cause impotence, chronic pain, excruciating urination, and more.

But theres a better way

A new study from UC Davis shows that an all-natural and surprisingly common supplement can actually slow prostate cancer growth to a crawl.

Scientists at the University of California Davis have found that just a handful of walnuts a day can keep prostate cancer from growing and spreading.

In fact, walnuts are the source of many health-enhancing chemicals that slow prostate cancer growth.

Because walnuts host a variety of beneficial chemicals walnut oil, omega-3 fatty acids, and so on the research team worked to find if it was one of these or the entire walnut that does the job.

The study divided their test subjects in this case, mice into three groups. One received whole walnuts, the next just walnut oil, and the third an omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts.

After 18 weeks, the whole nuts and the walnut oil had slowed prostate cancer growth. But the omega-3 had no beneficial effect.

What does this mean? Its the whole walnut that does the trick. Including the fat, not just omega-3.

The oil and nut groups also showed lower cholesterol levels and a decrease in the hormone IGF-1 that is linked to prostate and breast cancers.

Choose The Mediterranean Diet

A healthy diet for everyone, the Mediterranean diet is especially beneficial for prostate health.

Fresh vegetables, fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil, and fresh fruits, along with whole grains are all heart healthy and prostate healthy. Nuts and avocados are better than carbs and fatty foods, therefore reduce the amount of red meat and processed foods.

One tablespoon of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, or Italian dressings reduce insulin levels and inflammations.

Eating Nuts Improves Prostate Cancer Survival

Nuts appear to improve survival in men with prostate cancer. Thats the conclusion from a study involving almost 47,300 men whose nut consumption and prostate cancer risk and survival were observed for 26 years. Men who ate nuts at least five times a week were more likely to survive a diagnosis of prostate cancer than those who ate nuts less than once a month.

During that time, 6,810 men developed prostate cancer and, although eating nuts did not lower the chance of developing prostate cancer, those who ate nuts at least five times a week after their diagnosis, were 34% more likely to survive than those who ate nuts less than once a month. Eating nuts was also associated with fewer deaths from any medical cause including prostate cancer and heart disease.

A serving of nuts was defined as 28 grams and included peanuts as well as tree nuts such as Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts and pecan nuts. Dietary surveys were repeated every 4 years over the 26 year study, so that any change in nut consumption was captured.

What The Research Says

A recent study has also evaluated a possible connection. The authors explored the link between prostate enlargement and vitamin D. They did it through the hormone testosterone. Their results show that higher vitamin D levels in the blood reduce the PSA levels. They also hypothesize that testosterone levels and function depend on vitamin D status. If thats the case, low vitamin D levels would also have a hormonal consequence that explains BPH and BPH symptoms .

Other studies explored a more direct association between the prostate tissue and vitamin D. Interestingly the prostate epithelial cells can activate vitamin D. Moreover, these cells have a vitamin D receptor, even prostate cancer cells. Upon binding, vitamin D sends signals to control the proliferation of cells.

What Is An Enlarged Prostate

Foods for Prostate Health

An enlargedprostate glandis quite common among menin fact by the time a man is 60 years old there is a 50/50 chance he will develop an enlarged prostate. But what exactly is the prostate glandand why does it become enlarged?

An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia and it affects many men over the age of 50. As men age, testosterone levels drop, which leads to higher estrogen levels. Increased estrogen has been correlated with BPH. High levels of dihydrotestosterone have also been linked to BPH. The key here is to investigate the reason why your prostate is enlarged and pick the appropriate treatment, plus lifestyle changes, to reverse it once and for all. Remember, not all men are created equal.

There are strong links between other health conditions and development of BPH. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other inflammatory conditions pose the greatest risk. Why? Well, there are a few reasons.

First, these conditions are all inflammatory and cause stress to the body. Second, improper blood sugar control leads to insulin resistance, and insulin resistance leads to obesity. Excess fat leads to the storage of estrogen and the resulting decline of testosterone. Finally, highly inflammatory fat diets have been linked to higher levels of prostate problems. These diets also lend themselves to insulin resistance, adding more stress to the system. See a pattern here? Its a vicious cycle.

Almond Milk May Cause Nutritional Deficiencies In Infants

heart_almonds

Almond milk has proven health benefits for many types of people, but not everyone. When it comes to the nutrition and health of infants, almond milk is one way you should never ever go. At least according to Dr. Julie Lemale, who is a researcher at Hôpital Trousseau in France. Her 2014 study came to the conclusion that infants who drank almond milk had nutritional deficiencies as well as growth problems. If your child is allergic to milk or lactose intolerant, consult with your pediatrician for helping finding an appropriate formula.

A lot of this can be trailed back to the fact that almond milk doesnt contain a high amount of protein, calcium, or other much-needed nutrients, even when fortified. There is also not as many vitamins and minerals in almond milk that infants need as theyre growing. While this may not be as much of an issue for an adult, for a growing child, its critical. Growing children need calcium to strengthen their bones during important growth periods. Denying them that can lead to serious complications and osteoporosis down the road.

This isnt to say that toddlers and children cant have almond milk. It just needs to be in addition to something else that has the nutrients they need. Think of it as an accompaniment rather than the main beverage of choice.
